the hd800 is actually not that hard to drive just like the rest of the sennheisers. the higher end models do need a stronger amp to be louder but they're not objectionable to use with a portable phone or dac
>>
>>64646293
They're big, bulky, needs amp, are open headphones so using them anywhere public is retarded, and if you're at home then what's the purpose of using a portable device?

Just like I said, they're pretty sensitive and somewhat easy to drive. Portable isn't the best way to use them but they're not objectionable with a portable device. They're definitely at their loudest with a separate amplifier

My phone. I'm not that mad about music to listen to it everywhere and spend big bucks on placebo.

Also, headphones are inherently flawed for me. See binaural audio

Just because they get loud enough doesn't mean they sound how they are supposed to sound. And amp will drive them correctly.

Are you going to jail for life? I doubt even then you need 3tb of music. Please tell me you're not listening to 24 bit flacs

No, seriously, if you somehow have 3tb of music, you might have a hoarding problem. My whole collection on my SSD is around 10 gb at most

I don't see what your problem with them is. They could be used in many ways, not everyone works in a completely public atmosphere. Even cubicle jobs have certain amount of privacy. Even at home you have the freedom tomove away from your main work station with them.

They're not even that great as headphones anyway. At the price point of $1000 you could say

>headphones? For what purpose?
>>
>>64647267
10GB is like 20 albums, dude. Surely you have more than that.
>>
>>64647320
>>64647445
Actually I just checked and it's a little over 20gb, but I once tried to get into flacs and still have some albums in lossless. If I swap them for mp3 I think it'll be 10gb or less.

I don't get why keep albums which I won't ever listen to again. I used to play some albums 100 times or more, like Disintegration or Nevermind—so why keep them? They've burned out completely for me, there's nothing new I will hear in them in the following 5 years at least. I can probably play and sing the whole In Utero from memory if I wanted to.

>>64647267
im listening to v0 actually lol
i dont have a hoarding problem, im super minimal in every regard of my life "except" this and i put that on quotes because im not looking to have every album ever made, just every relevant music ever recorded so that when i see an album recommended online or whatever i can go and listen to it immediately. if only streaming services had everything...
>>64647784
>I don't get why keep albums which I won't ever listen to again
i can never know this for certain my favorite albums i all didnt truly enjoy in the beginning, my favorite i actually actively disliked. ive also had albums ive grown out of, for example bjork discopgrahy, which just today, after 2 years without listening, i can listen to again, without going through the trouble of downloading it.
>>
>>64649238

I guessing 1TB of music would be well over 5,000 albums, in v0. And while I can understand having a 5,000 album collection, I can't figure out why you want to have all of that music on you at all times.
>>
>>64647098
>implying speakers are not more flawed

Not even close. Speakers stomp the shit out of headphones in every sonic category you can think of aside from resolving microdetails a bit more clearly.

The soundstage on headphones is a joke. Imaging is a joke (drums in the back of your head. The voice in the center of your head, etc). Dynamics are a joke. And bass extension is a joke.

The only thing headphones do well is getting rid of room problems, but directivity in modern speaker designs is so good now, room problems aren't the big issue they once were (unless you're listening room is really, really bad).

There's no reason for a music listener to choose headphones over speakers if you the necessary listening space. Headphones are primarily lifestyle products for those interested in portable audio.

Indeed. If you have a grand to spend on headphones, you're probably not a poor college student/NEET/high school student living in a sardine can and should have the room for a proper speaker setup.

500.00 will get you "end game" headphones. After that, time to grow up and buy speakers.

Let's assume 1 minute of music is ~3mb .

Then 3tb = 1 000 000 minutes = 16667 hours = 694 days of music. So, almost 2 years of music playing non-stop

Let's say that one album occupies around 120mb. You have ~25 000 albums on your hard drive.

Don't you think that's a bit too much even for your purposes
>>
>>64649433
All of this.

The real purpose of headphones is convenience. Complete sound isolation. Ability to listen to music where you otherwise wouldn't be able to.

Virtually every album in existence has been mastered for speakers. Say a record has guitar at 100% loudness in the left channel, and muted in the right channel. With speakers, this sounds normal. With headphones, it sounds disorienting and fucked up. No BS2B/Meier/other binaural solution will really solve it.

I had planar magnetic headphones. Some good Beyerdynamic ones too. Had an OK amplifier. Sold all of these because it's all pointless.

Just got a Fiio X1 & 120gb card to replace a dead ipod classic. It's pretty cool. I really like how it doesn't have a proprietary cable or software, just micro sd and foobar/ windows explorer. It feels reasonably built and the interface/ controls are good. It has a metal case with well machined edges and fits in the hand nicely- good even weight and size too. It has quite a few dedicated buttons but no pause button which is annoying. Also there is no 'add to now playing' for setting up playlists from the player. Through lowish end decent ATH-A500s and B & W DM220s The sound is noticeably superior to an ipod or my computer- not really neutral, slightly boomy- but better clarity than what i'm used to. It especially sounds good using the lineout through a stereo (you can switch between headphone out and lineout). The sound quality on this is really excellent for the price.

Damn I miss my 2nd gen Zune 120 though, that thing was the best with a huge screen, nice ui, font, custom backgrounds and setting up playlists on the device. Too bad they made the first gen one shit brown and poured money into an abysmal music service, second gen was superior to an ipod classic.

>soundstage with extra ambiance no audio engineer wants

Lol. What? I've never heard "soundstage produced ambiance" being a concern for an audio engineer.

Studio recordings are multitracked and then the soundstage is assembled in post. And for live recordings or bands who want to play "live" in the studio in front of a mic, yeah, let's have the musicians stand shoulder-to-shoulder to get rid of "ambiance" (whatever that means).

>muh heart attack bass

Damn right.

if you mean it for the cellphone, yeah, it isnt that much of an issue, i can deal with 200gb. ive managed with 4 gb so far, actually. its just nice to know i could listen to anything i want, whenever.

its just ease of access. i listen to music 70% of the time im awake, and im eager to listen to new albums every day, so this just helps the process. now that im at 3tb it isnt growing as exponential as it was. ive got most albums worth listening downloaded by this point.

>i listen to music 70% of the time im awake

Let's assume you're like me, sleeping 8 hours a day. So then let's say you listen to music around 11 hours a day.

It'd take you ~1515 days to listen to your whole collection from start to finish. And that's only a single listen for every song.

Sounds ok, right?
