I just finished A Promise for the first time. Its pretty good although some of the experimental parts seem forced. The last song is GOAT.
I'm now listening to Joy Division due to how much it influenced A Promise.

I've not given that a listen, how's it compare to A Promise?

that's always tough with a huge discography. I'd go with One Size Fits All, We're Only in it For the Money, and/or Hot Rats.
Just finished listening to Chick Corea- Now He Sings Now He Sobs, fucking amazing album to produce at 26

Hot Rats and One Size Fits All

I don't really remember A Promise, but promise is a lot more rawe and experimental

FUCKING KNEW SOMEONE WOULD PUT THIS.

Not OP but I honestly prefer it over A Promise. Its less experimental but when it is, it feels like the experimental portions are conveying a real genuine emotion; the same emotion the rest of the song is conveying.
The whole thing seems more genuine and personal. A Promise is still really good though.
I connected with Knife Play way more.

I find A Promise more alienating, like you're supposed to be disturbed/horrified at some fucked up shit. Knife Play brings me along for the ride, like I'm actually supposed to be feeling what Jamie is feeling (even if it is conveyed through narratives). Spectator versus passenger for the most part. There are exceptions on both, though (Apistat Commander, Ian Curtis Wishlist; Anne Dong)

That's a fantastic way to explain it.
Decent post-rock + emo
