Should Joanna Newsom make instrumental only music?
>>
no you should listen to something else
>>
>>64509417
In this case "should" is a strong word.

If she made an instrumental album I would listen and most definitely love it.

But you made this question based on all the /mu/tants that think her voice is shit, didn't you?
>>
>>64509417
her voice adds to the music anon
>>
She should make music with her ass
>>
>>64509618
This, basically.

I think every artist should release a completely instrumental album.
>>
>>64509618
Let's say that her voice is controversial. Would her music be better without her voice?
>>
>>64509799
no
>>
>>64509799
no
>>
Would listen to 50 minutes of her ass clapping

>>64509417
Does she even have any photos that are not sexually suggestive?
>>
>>64509799
No. If you don't appreciate her voice then you certainly don't appreciate her music enough to be catered to. She's a singer/songwriter, for God's sake.
>>
>>64509618
>If she made an instrumental album I would listen and most definitely love it.

No you wouldn't, because the reason her voice is shit and there's so much of it is to obscure that the music is below-average.
>>
>>64509894
can you translate that into a statement that actually makes sense
>>
>>64509919
She's adopted her wailing so to make it a selling point, 'I'm artistically independent and I don't care what people make of me', and she doesn't shut up to distract from lack of melody.
>>
>>64509953
>distinct lack of melody
Dude, this is pathetic. You have no idea what you're talking about. She's a classically trained musician.
>>
>>64509417

No, she should put her talents to good use and become a porn actress.
>>
>>64509953
>lack of melody.

lol wut. She's one of the most melodically interesting singer songwriters out there right now. You haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about.
>>
>>64509417
she should sit on my face
>>
>>64509417
is that a speaker shes sitting on? she is just asking to be rapped

What order should I listen to Have One On Me?

There's 3 CDs.

>>64510746
1....then 2... then 3
>>
>>64510826
But what if it's a countdown like a rocket ship
>>
>>64510746
what order should i listen to while jerking off? it takes me awhile to climax since im so desensitized to it. i need it to really come in about min 45
>>
>>64509417
hows her ass?
>>
Which album is her most accessible? By accessible I mean her singing is as normal as possible.
>>
Voice aside, her lyrical songwriting is by far the strongest part of her music. That would be absolutely retarded. That's like telling Joni Mitchell to make instrumental music.
>>
>>64510929
"Have just one on me but that's it I'm on a budget here"
>>
>>64509953

Only Skin and Go Long have two of the greatest melodies from any work in the past 50 years, at least.
>>
>>64510929
Have One On Me
>>
>>64510929
Have One On Me by far has her warmest most accessible vocals
>>
>>64510888

I'd let her blastoff my rocketship.

>>

It's her best as well, but Ys is also great.
>>
The live versions of the Ys tracks are soooo much fucking better than the studio versions because of the use of folk instruments to play those Van Dyke Parks arrangements. If the studio album had those versions then it would probably be the best folk album ever.
>>
Joanna Newsom is legitimately my favourite vocalist.

Recommended bootlegs? I have the Live at Bottletree one, but there's a lot of clipping at one point and the quality is not great.

nigger have you even listened to her music

She's my favourite female vocalist, but in general is pushing it.

I don't like this kind of voice but I'll give it a try anyway. I didn't like Grimes' voice too but it grew on me.

Yeah, the clipping on Emily is really unfortunate because the arrangement is so great. Luckily the only other clipping I remember on that is just one spot on Monkey and Bear. That version of Only Skin is a fucking masterpiece, though. Try to find her 07/25/2011 Le Trianon, Paris bootleg. Only Ys songs on it are Cosmia and Monkey and Bear, most is HOOM, but it's great quality. She does an amazing alternate version of Peach, Plum, Pear.

Also, Live at the Club Ampere, Munich, Germany, April 7, 2005 is a great performance featuring most of Milk-Eyed Mender, as well as an early performance of Sawdust and Diamonds.
>>
>>64511133
It's just my opinion. I love her voice on a technical and emotional level and I appreciate it more than any other artist, male or female.
>>
>>64511201

Meant to reply to >>64511122
>>
>>64511195
It's because she's on drag city. They don't put any of their artists on Spotify.
>>
>>64511146
They have nothing in common. Joanna's vocals have a tremendous amount of emotion and care put into them, while Grimes simply contributes high pitched vocals to her albums that add to the dreamy atmosphere she attempts to convey.

That being said, her vocals certainly grew on me as I listened to her more and more.

>>64511195
Her music is not on Spotify because the service doesn't provide fair royalties to artists. I think that's a pretty fair reason.

Anyway, there's no point in using Spotify because the only musicians who make a reasonable amount of money from the service are ones that already are rich enough.

>>64511201
>>64511242
I'll be certain to check out both, thanks a ton.

>>64511251
Agreed. The amount of emotion conveyed in her voice is more than any other artist I'm familiar with.
>>
>>64511086

My favorite female songwriter for sure, but not vocalist. I do love her voice, though.
>>
>>64511287
Have you seen this, anon? It's quickly becoming one of my favourite live performances ever.

kek, not that anon, but I was just watching this over and over 4 or 5 nights ago. That whole last half is godlike. The Paris bootleg I mentioned a few posts above has a performance of Baby Birch that sounds just like this.

I think you misunderstood Grimes. There aren't just high pitched vocals for the dreamy atmospheres, but also very specific and direct emotional vocals. They add a lot to her music.

The point of Spotify is to get an artist out there, yeah you don't get a huge amount but any streaming service with a premium option isn't going to pay well.
>>
Fuck it, I'm just gonna upload the Paris bootleg to mega. Gimme like 30 minutes.

>>
>>64511330
Incredible. She really needs to record a proper live album. "We take a walk" onward is certainly on par with the album version, if not better.

>>64511438
I've only heard Visions and Art Angels, so I suppose I shouldn't have made that comment although it holds true of those two albums (with the exception of that first song you linked).

>>64511479
People who stream music almost never buy it. For musicians on labels like Drag City, there's no point in putting your music out for people to here while you only receive pennies. It would be better to withhold your albums in that case.
>>
So how did Divers turn out?
>>
>>64511821

Bretty good.
>>
>>64511646
You should check Geidi Primes, Halfaxa and Darkbloom too. They're weirder and otherworldy.

It's funny how people hate on her voice when she basically has had three different ones.
>>
>>64511646
Music should not be a business. Those who are truly passionate about music don't care about the money. Streaming and torrenting puts power in the hands of the audience. If musicians want to make money, they need to play more shows. Play good shows so that people want to come. Convince people to buy records by being and artist worth paying for
>>
>>64514055
this. Also her fanbase is pretty dedicated and most will probably buy her shit anyway. Streaming just helps you get new listeners who could potentially become paying customers
>>
>>64513403
