anon, spork metal will bring salvation to the world some day, according to my main man hhh
>It’s hard to describe, but I can imagine a computer music that embodies this combination of FEDERATION, TRANSFIGURATION, and ALCHEMY—not so much combined into a unity, but into a roiling, contradictory mess, like mental and emotional gymnastics courses on which the soul can discover its true nature, only to abandon this nature and replace it. It would be a flux of clashing identities, imperatives, and motifs: noise, cloud rap, punk, metal, avant-garde music from the IRCAM-era, romantic tone poems, medieval masses, candy ravers, Elisabethan aristocrats, brooding modernists. It would experiment with frequencies, vibrations, hyper-compressed and hyper-extended temporal durations, stochastic irregularities, and phase spaces at the inner, interpersonal, organic, and inorganic levels. And all of it would clash together as a super-cultural counter-identification with the one true God in an eschatological supercollider, creating particles of faith, hope and love.

btw, what's some good or underrated eclectic-as-all-fuck avant-meal? i've grown a liking of patton projects lately

>>
>>64469357
No, proge refers to bands that ape and copy prog bands but aren't actually progressive by definition.

Dream theater were progressive. Bands that copy their style aren't. They're proge

there's great proge though, some better than the actual prog it was influenced by.

haken's proge but they're better than dream theater

The thing is, at this point Devy has the resources to just make whatever he wants. So it's both a blessing and a curse: we don't have to wait so long between releases, but he's not forced to revisit his ideas again and again until they're seriously good instead of just "okay".

He already topped out with Deconstruction and Ghost, so it doesn't really matter.

Oh, I'm not speaking to quality. Queensryche is fucking terrible always. I just mean, saying a given band is now "less inspired" is kind of ridiculous. They weren't super inspired earlier, we just hadn't burned out on their sound yet.

The way it's used, I thought proge meant the progressive metalcore/djent/XD RANDOM/meme metal sound from Born of Osiris or Haken or Erra or The Algorithm; the "new wave" of progressive metal that doesn't sound anything like 90s-00s prog.

Honestly, this is like arguing about "meme metal". It's kind of pointless, and only serves to feed elitism, when non-label-based opinions would do just as well or better.

W.A.S.P. were a household name as the quintessential dangerous "metal" band of a certain period of the 80's. Their shirts made tons of little media appearances here and there. I remember seeing an 80's horror film with a stereotypical "metalhead" boyfriend and he was wearing a W.A.S.P. shirt.
They even made an appearance in Ragewar/The Dungeonmaster:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNE48oSzuXY

Too bad they were rushed into making their second album, and toned down their third album as it basically threw a wrench into their career.

Yes but thankfully they came out with The Headless Children and singlehandedly elevated Glam to a whole new level.

Blackie was starting to struggle with all the drug addiction and didn't want to be pigeonholed into dumb silly glam metal due to their third album. So they made Headless Children more sinister and grandiose instead of just making it catchy and badass. It's SERIOUS Glam Metal and it sounds amazing.

Certainly, it's a great album.
Blackie got sick of that shit and wanted to do a solo album probably because of the afforementioned shit but ended up releasing The Crimson Idol as a W.A.S.P. release. It keeps that sound to a degree but runs as a concept. I think it's the only album I have on cassette because I somehow managed to find one at a record store. Underrated as fuck writing too.

At the end of the day, it is another concept album about a young rockstar like The Lamb Lies down on Broadway, but the execution is phenomenal. Motifs, actually good writing for a concept album and actual pathos, hell, even the bonus tracks kick ass and add to the story.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that Metal Archives doesn't consider Isis metal; I know they do. I just mean the intense elitist attitude of "not metal" I see as a force in the community because of them.

Nerds of all types argue subgenres, but MA holds the unique position of being the dominant website dedicated to metal, and so has a stronger voice in the discussion, which legitimizes elitists who yell about which bands are or are not metal.

As one might tell, I fucking hate MA's stance.

>>
>>64471939
Nah, man, not really. I just hate exclusionary elitism in all things. It leads to inconsistency and malice and ill-will where there doesn't need to be any.

What makes Rush more metal than Porcupine Tree?
What makes Deep Purple more metal than Led Zepplin?
What makes Dream Theater more metal than Between The Buried And Me?
What makes Chimaira more metal than Hatebreed?

When the line is so blurred, why force it to be sharp? Let a bit of rock or a bit of punk or a bit of hardcore in, so you're absolutely sure you've catalogued every scrap of metal. It's like they've said, "Metal can grow in these certain ways, but not in those. Beyond what has come before is disallowed."

I'm really *really* not a fan of bands like Erra or The Algorithm, which I think constitute a direction proge and meme metal are going, right? But they are just as metal as any of the above bands.

I love Metal Tracker's description of what metal sounds like: "the [pioneer] bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness." That's metal, and it encompasses so many bands that a place like MA doesn't include.

Still angry, obvs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddpl1zl5sYg

But that's my point. Those Deep Purple songs don't sound that metal, compared to Sabbath. They sound slightly more metal compared to Zepplin. How metal is the second half of I Want You (She's So Heavy), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgx2KCZFjY0 when compared to early Sabbath? Getting closer, but not quite.

It's all a continuum, so it's better to be permissive than exclusive.
