Crap music. One of the most overrated of the big stars.

like all black icons he's extremely over rated

I like Purple Rain but really only about three or four of the songs. Bowie's death bothered me more but as a resident of Minneapolis I don't share that information. Have just noticed how celebrity truly replaced gods.

I find it interesting that people (kids) that never listened to Prince before now want to "get into him". Are you trying to seem "with it" at the coffee house? You're down with his brand of sexfunk, and know where that nigga is coming from?

IMO Prince was an excellent musician. I like nearly every song on Purple Rain, Sign O' The Times was alright but it didn't catch my attention for long enough. Not to say it was bad, simply not my kind of music. Still, his playing and songwriting can be amazing at times. And also, he wrote Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares To You", which in my book is an amazing song.

However, IMO, Prince never was terribly relevant, except for in the '80s (and even that is a stretch). Something about his persona/music was just very outdated—he wanted to be treated like "one-man genius", but it's not like he was some kind of visionary. Yes, his mix of black music like soul and R&B with rock was interesting, but it all sounded very safe, like adult radio material.

His regressiveness was what killed him for me. He was no more relevant musically than Elton John.

Finally, critics will obviously have a huge bias in his favor—Purple Rain has sold 20 million copies since 1984, which makes him a star of Tina Turner/Whitney Houston caliber. Critics will favor him just not to piss off masses, and now that he's dead they will whore for public tastes even more. You have to find someone unbiased like Scaruffi to get a true measure of Prince's work.
>>
>>64467162
I've heard one on the radio and they announced it as 'one of his best' but it sucked tremendously so im not even curious about his other works
>>
>>64469816
>he wrote Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares To You", which in my book is an amazing song.

She covered his song without asking, when it came out, Prince invited her to his home and chewed her out harder then a lesbo would like. He almost killed her. You can type anything you want. You are not black and dont understand Prince and I am glad.
>>
>You are not black
what does he mena by this?
>>
>>64469939
>what does he mena by this?
Typing in a bad Italian accent doesnt make you a real negro with the ears to listen to Prince.
>>
>>64469802
If they're genuinely wanting to get his stuff I don't see the problem (although I'm aware some people only do that for attention). It's just a shame it didn't happen until after he died. But I didn't get into Bowie until he died because it was that that piqued my interest, so I understand where they're coming from.
>>
I really can't understand how Gold Experience can be better than King Crimson
>>
>>64469881
what one was it?

You mean like that Prince movie? That shit was so gay, fucking 80s style
>>
>>64470037
Why though? I think it's a shame too, but I have a huge list of artists I've been meaning to check out and I just never got around to him until his death pushed him to the top of it. It doesn't discount how much it I like his music now.
>>
>>64470097
but the 80s style is kewl.
>>
>>64470114
What are you 13?? Bowie's music has been around for 40+ years. What the fuck have you been listening to? Its like you knew about the Beatles but never really got in to them until that shitty movie years ago. Fuck you. No one need the internet to find music. In all that time I bet you never really lived either.

I don't like 80s pop music, but if I enjoyed Bowies Let's Dance is there a chance that I will also like Purple Rain?
>>
>>64470736
I've never been able to find it, actually. I have "Hits/The B-Sides" and the songs on that from "For You" I'm not a huge fan of but they aren't bad.
>>
>>64470773
You'd definitely prefer 1999 more if you like Let's Dance. Purple Rain is more rockish.
>>
>>64470876
Well, I'll check out both of them, thanky

My only real memory of him prior to his death was his Super Bowl performance, so I knew the guy was talented. It didn't really hit me how talented he was till I saw that unreleased SNL performance and a couple days ago I went to see Purple Rain for the first time at my local theater. The movie was hilarious, I don't know that I'd call it good, but I was entertained. That soundtrack was god-tier though, bought the CD and LP the very next day. Guy knew how to write a catchy tune, I'll probably gonna pick up 1999 too cos its $4 at my local Hastings.

His last concert was great too

the guy was a fucking nutter but made good tunes and the Purple Rain movie is one of the most quintessentially 80 things ever.

At times Prince did genuinely border on "genius." There are moments in his songs, and his songwriting, that break out of the mold of what we expect in pop music. A lot of Purple Rain threatens to explode off of the record, with guitar and so on. "Let's Go Crazy" is one great example of a song that has been ripped apart from the inside out.

But what else? Well, frankly, I do think Prince had a LOT of stuff that kind of just sounds dated now, very 80s girl radio pop style, and actually really doesn't transcend its time very much. I think Prince was very much a songwriter, he focused on the lyrics but a lot of his songs sound identical to me, and actually come off like filler.

That said, you can't really underrate or overrate him. He had some great, inventive moments and unfortunately a lot of shit surrounding it. If you made a greatest hits record for your car, I think it would be incredible.

To be honest - for me, I really don't feel much desire to listen to him. Or Bowie, for that matter. I never really enjoyed the music either one made, and actually they're both pretty similar.

>>64469816
Pretty well said. Not exactly what I think, but very close.
>>
I don't really get his thing. It's all 80's poppy and stuff and I can't really connect with it, but 1999 is a fucking groove and it listening to it makes me feel oddly sexy.
>>
>>64466787
I've liked him since the mid 90s. (I was probably 7 or 8 years old when I first heard him). He's a fantastic pop songwriter and instrumentalist.
>>
>>64466787
The only music legend to die this year. A real shame.
No, Bowie was not a legend, he was an icon at most.
Legend is Michael/Prince tier. Bowie was never near that level.
