What are their best albums outside of the 4 or so everyone knows?
I assume you mean Propeller, B1000, Alien Lanes, and UTBUTS.
Probably:
>Vampire on Titus
>Isolation Drills
>Earthquake Glue
>Robert Pollard & Doug Gillard - Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department
>Robert Pollard - Not in my Airforce
>Robert Pollard - From a Compound Eye
>Robert Pollard - Blazing Gentlemen
Those are among the most solid. If you're a fan almost everything Bob puts out is worth listening to, there's always gold hiding in there, but many releases are pretty scattershot.
I literally know nothing about this group but wanna get into them, what are those essential 4 albums

Listen to these albums in this order:
>Bee Thousand
>Alien Lanes
>Propeller
>Under the Bushes Under the Stars
VAMPIRE ON TITUS
also Let's Eat the Factory is fun return to form
Everyone shits on Do the Collapse, but its got some great songs and slick production
my favorite is probably Suitcase. so much discarded gold.

Why is Vampire On Titus so miserable and depressing? Even the more upbeat songs feel like shitty winter drunkness.

That was exactly it, it was recorded during a transition period in Bob's life where he wasn't sure if he had a future career in music or not (before Bee Thousand made them INDIE STARS). A lot of the mood also comes from the minimal production and Bob playing the majority of instruments, the all-Bob tone is uniquely ugly (in a genius way).

Does any other rock band have as rewarding a discography as the GBV tree of bands and artists?
The only one I can think of is The Fall, and even they don't have all those side-projects and solo records that the GBV crew does.

It really is an extremely anxious album, almost unpleasant in how it feels. It's pretty incredible that he managed to capture these feelings through such crude and barebones means.

One fucking moment, bob plays a instrument besides vocals? Prove of that?

i mean the Grateful Dead jumps to mind immediately, but nothing really compares to GBV

I'd say he plays a part on the recordings of most GBV tracks, he just doesn't play live so he can focus more on his kicks and mic spins. Check credits for tracks on GBVDB, for example he played every instrument on "Man Called Aerodynamics" and the new GBV album Please Be Honest.
The GBVDB credits for Vampire on Titus tracks actually give more credit to Tobin and Jim than I've anecdotally heard about the production, can't say for sure which story's more accurate.

Like 80% of Isolation Drills is great stuff. That album really doesn't get it's due, honestly.

Ah, I get it now, every song on Titus has the same credits because more detailed ones aren't availible. I've heard that Tobin played all the instruments on his songs and Bob played all the instruments on his, with only 1 or 2 songs featuring both.

agreed. awesome album with catchy as fuck songs.
Thoughts on solo Sprout? Some great stuff there.
