Can someone explain the appeal of prog rock to me? I've tried listening to this a few times and I'm really not getting it, do people actually enjoy it or is it some kind of faux elitist genre people pretend to like?

That's because it's alt metal, not prog rock.

Prog rock is literally just trying to jam as many compositional "devices" together as possible with no regard for the actual sound of the music. And the lyrics are always top tier pretentious.
Porcupine Tree is more like some soft rock drone fest and then he throws in some riffs that sound like some basic Tool riffs and he sings about MTV and World of Warcraft

I don't know OP i like prog but what i don't like is shoegaze i'm pretty sure people are pretending to like that genre.

If you can't at least appreciate the drumming or the structural composition on that album then I honestly think there's something wrong with you
Sure, there's a lot wrong with it, but if you can't see why people enjoy it then you may be autistic

Yeah no, "In the Presence of Nothing" is one of my favorite albums.
Shoegaze isn't a meme, if the sounds aren't for you they aren't for you.

Shitty prog is like that. Actually decent prog does it very smoothly. Typically with average lyrics
i always liked opeth way more

This is true of many prog albums. It's not true of Fear of a Blank Planet, at all. Anesthetise has to be one of the most impeccably structured long songs of all time. It's 18 minutes but it never ever feels like it's seven songs mushed together (like most prog epics do) or that it should be any shorter.
