I don't believe poptimism is the issue either (it's a symptom), I rather think it's the anti-intellectualism and the "memes". If it's not funny it's not a meme, it's literally just litter - trash. The anti-intellectualism comes in the form of people randomly spouting their opinions. If somebody posts Sgt. Peppers and another user who doesn't like it sees it, he'll respond with one sentence stating that Sgt. Peppers is shit, and he doesn't like it. That's not how you start a discussion, and it's completely uninteresting on an anonymous imageboard.
My guess would be that a lot of these dumb/effectively retarded users are young, and aren't really ready to have any discussion about music. They're here to build identity, and just want to be part of a group.
