Why was Metallica successful?
>>

they were heavy as fuck and knew how to write epic songs

they blended metal, prog and punk very well

they took what their heroes taught them and made it better

This, they're basically shitting on his tomb stone these days.

Their first for album are fantastic thrash metal with more polished songwriting and prog elements. Also, if you see their live performances from the early 80s you can tell why they got a cult following before reaching the mainstream success. Their live shows were raw and powerful.

At what point did they start to go down and "sell out"? How long did they rule before ruining their cult? What was the reason? Money?

I don't get why the fuck people hate on everything past *insert any album past MoP*. I mean it's okay to not like things but I feel alot of people are just shitting them because "they are supposed to".

Mostly because they had good songcraft and a sense of melody. Bands like Slayer are heavier and their material has aged better, but their sound was based too much on whammy bar rape while playing as fast as possible. It's not very musical.
>>
They stopped being a band after the early 90s and became an entertainment corporation.

I agree. Reign In Blood is much heavier than MOP but how many good melodies are on there? The songs don't stick in your head like MOP title track or Battery.
