Is there anything darker musically than Memphis Rap?
I've listened to a lot of sinister music but as far as musical genres go I feel like hiphop has it locked down with memphis underground.

I could say metal is definitely a runner up, but I feel like memphis rap does it better because they don't have to try so hard to be dark, it feels more natural and less cartoony in a sense. Metal's instrumentalization can be made heavy and harsh but I'd say hiphop's production can be made really creepy because it's not limited by the use of certain musical instuments.
DJ paul/Juicy J's production discography is fucking crazy, it's like a horror films soundtrack or something.

I have the exact opposite opinion. Most memphis rap sounds cartoony as shit and like it's trying too hard to be "getto" and spooky and it just omes out silly and immature, despite most of the rappers and producers having first hand experience with what they talk about. Metal can also be silly and cartoonish, but it has subgenres that nail the scary and dark thing way more times than memphis rap.

I have a hard time agreeing with this. I would agree with you if you were talking about Houston horrorcore pioneers like Geto Boys and Ganksta N.I.P, but I'm not seeing it with a lot of memphis rap groups. Thier lyrics are usually embedded in realism for the most part and don't seem too exaggerated I'm sure there are examples but I feel like those would be exceptions to the rule.
Unless by darker you mean their skin I'd have to say this is subjectively darker. Even Big Black is darker.

Probably not, other than some Sacramento hip hop. Also, to the guy that thinks that Houston shit is a joke, it's no more of a joke than any of the shit people in Memphis were doing. Maybe Ganksta N-I-P, Bushwick, Point Blank and Face maybe weren't actually raping bitches by the dozens, but they were thoroughly motivated by what they were really living and what was going on around them to write those psychotic and paranoid raps. Watch any Scarface interview, the dude is permanently in as fucked up of a place as one can get. Those cheap, ultra-hard instrumentals on the early rap-a-lot albums can be a lot darker than the more complex Memphis production too in my opinion.

Gingerbread man is ruin-your-day core in a way I don't think many albums are. It's a kind of darkness nobody really talks about, that period later in your life when you are past the halfway point where you realize that many of the things you have wanted or yearned for your entire life, you will never, ever get or get back.
Every one of the nine people on the album has something they want, but cannot get. Despite the MIDI compositions, parts of it are just absolutely haunting.
There's also a long-form 10 minute music video out there that strings the more musical parts of 5 of the songs together that gives you the gist, but leaves out a lot.
