Lot's of verses and not much time ragging on hooks and choruses, so each song is probably worth the time.
That being said Runaway and Devil in a New Dress could probably have been shorter imo.

As a rare visitor to /mu/, here are my assessments of the meme albums I've listened to so far, some of them only once. Titles may be misremembered:

ITAOTS- 9/10 genuinely great
Merryweather Something
Pavilion- 7/10 good in parts but didn't really get
MBDTF or whatever- 9/10 also great
F sharp A flat Infinity- 8/10 but need to listen to again
Madvillainy- 6/10 but I wasn't paying much attention and should listen again some time
Exmilitary- 6/10 surprisingly not awful
Hospice- 8/10 seemed good
>>

These albums were literally all over the radio // on everybody's playlist less than 5 years ago. They played merryweather post at the groccery store.

Idk what you have against garage rock but I will say that is not a very accurate description of the album. It's one of the biggest indie rock albums of the 2000's and its a pretty fun listen. If you don't like the opener on the first listen you won't like the album so there isn't that much to lose by giving it a chance.

>As opposed to the big band, blues, piano jazz, Indian music, avant/show tunes influences of Sgt
Pet Sounds had an actual big band though. Sure, SP had was eclectic but it was hardly innovative beyond taking a variety of genres and applying them to rock. Pet sounds tried to expand upon rock and create something which had never been done before.

>Sad sack overblown mess of pop
Good argument there. The closest the Beatles ever came to a complex progression was LITSWD and they clearly had no idea how to transition out of the riff into their chorus. So their best thought for a transition? How about 4 kick drum stomps? Terrible. The BB had mutli measure progressions that combined dissonance and bi-tonality into a catchy melody. Their sound was more fleshed out and full than the weak sections the Beatles had on songs. Even the Beatles' most orchestral song sounds empty and underwhelming next to something off of Pet Sounds.

>By what metric? Not as innovative as Sgt
The Beach Boys had 6 of the best singers of the time singing complex harmonies over the best session musicians in California. The only thing SGT Pepper has going for it is it's concept, which it swiftly abandoned two songs and one Ringo quota into the album. It's a messy collection of rough pop songs hyped up under the guise of experimentation. It's got horrible flow, slapping generic Indian wankery in the middle killing any momentum built from the album's only two good songs that aren't A Day in the Life and LITSWD.

Surfs Up is pretty good though. Glad you like it.

Still not sure about this one. It reminds me of The Residents, but I like them quite a bit more.

>>64183337
Pretty good, but I think it was toted as being essential because it's so similar to ITAOTS

>>64184630
Great album, but make sure you listen close to the lyricism. It would be solid without, but that's what makes it truly special.

>>64184800
Pretty good, TBB never had the range that The Beatles did though. Some of the compositions are more intricate than anything The Beatles pretty much ever did in a more classical sense, but it's less focused, less irreverent, has fucking terrible lyricism, is less dynamic, and is less diverse. Still definitely give it a listen, but a lot of people here overrate this because they're jaded to The Beatles and think it's cool to say fuck 'em. Same goes for The Velvet Underground, although both TVU and TBB did some great stuff that really should be listened to.

>>64186869
Very interesting compositions, I prefer OK Computer, which is easily better in terms of writing and performance, but Kid A is probably more artistic in terms of creative decisions.

Exmilitary is probably the least serious of every release as a whole. It's hard to justify: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTEscgVDnAU

Honestly, it was the last DG album, I listened to and I used to hate it, but it might grow on you. Every song kind of blends into the next one or links into it, so if you aren't hooked on Beware or Guillotine, you may not be able to get the full ride.

Not the best for first DG, this would be that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DigtCrO77L8
It's got as many hooks as a fisherman's hat, the lyrics actually make sense, and it may guide you into some more of their stuff.

Pefect. Personal recommendation.
Listen to it in Mono until you enjoy it, and then listen to the stereo version. You'll basically get to re-experience this a second time.

It also may take you more than one listen to realize how good the composition is, especially in comparison to most of the music that was coming out around that time.

How can you possibly really believe what you just said makes sense? How is incorporating far more diverse ideas and techniques any different than PS? Point me to a song that does what A Day in the Life does before it existed.

Your whole middle paragraph proves you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. LITSWD is their most complex progression? That's so wrong I don't even know where to begin.

Elenor Rigby, A Day in the Life, Your Mother Should Know, She's Leaving Home, Mr. Kite, etc etc etc. What do you even mean by complex progression? Tonality? Instrumentation? Because what you said is simply wrong.

YES HOLY SHIT MAN
>>

No one on /mu/ liked or listened to that album, wanna know why? It's pure shit
>>

>How can you possibly really believe what you just said makes sense
Because slapping generic Indian music or shoehorning generic string sections into a song does not make an album good. Pet Sounds was expanding an innovating. SGT was taking what already existed and throwing it into a rock context.

I don't know what you mean when you say you want a song that does what A day in the life does, but whatever. I agree that's a good song. Probably the best on the album.

I take it you don't know much about progressions. I'm speaking specifically about chord changes. Also Eleanor Rigby and Your mother should know aren't even on SP. Mr. Kite is good, as is She's leaving home, but dispite being the best songs on the album next to A day in the life, they're not especially complicated as far as chord changes. LITSWD is only complex because of it's key shift and resolve during the verse.

>I would rebuttal, but these two summed it up already.
>I don't know what to say so I'll just say he's posting memes

I have never listened to a Beatles or Beach Boys album in full.

Its highs are high but its lows are lower than shit.
>>64182008
their worst since PH
>>64182239
terrible
>>64182510
It's complete shit but it's worth a listen for historical context and to see what the fuss is all about.

>>64186869
absolutely worth it especially OKC
>>64190441
definitely worth it
>>64193547
This isn't /mu/core in the slightest but it's great and you should definitely listen to it.
>>
>>64187633
>The latter is more complex
lol no
>more unique
no
>displays much better musicianship
not a chance
>and is just catchier
perhaps most of the album but nothing on PS is catchier than GB or WALH
>>
>>64196670
>your whole post
lol no lol
>>
>>64196670
lol are you seriously saying Sgt. Pepper is more complex than Pet Sounds? Compositionally, the songs and arrangements on PS are far more complex than the ones on Pepper. This is a fact. You cannot dispute this.
>>
>>64196889
>lol are you seriously saying Sgt. Pepper is more complex than Pet Sounds?
in literally every way and it isn't negotiable

I'm convinced you're a troll.

It's good. Not their best, but still good. IMO Separator (the closing track) is one of the best songs they've ever written.

>>64193319
Have you listened to any of her other albums? If not, don't start with Have One On Me. Start with Ys.
>>
>>64197827
It's a pretty polarizing album. At first I was put off by it, but it slowly grew on me. It's now in my top 20 all-time albums. Lyrics are wonderful.
>>
>>64197914
Can I understand what she's saying without looking it up? Could I enjoy this album on a train without reading a single word?
>>
>>64198012
You'll probably be able to understand 70% of the lyrics, it's just that she sings with a very fairy-like (some would say childlike) cadence. Reading along would actually make it fun, though. It's like reading a fairy tale. All of Ys is fun.
>>
>>64196546
Listen to it man, it's one of my favorite albums of all time
>>
>>64198012
Cosmia (track 4?) is great. The wordplay is God-tier.
>>
>>64197758
if you like spiderland you might get a kick out of this. just as a warning, this album is sadboys-tier gloomy.
>>
>>64197758
I heard the first 10 minutes and turned it off because the music hadn't started
>>
I have not heard
>Pet Sounds
>Pink Moon
>any David Bowie full albums
>any AnCo besides MPP
>Animals
>Sigur Ros
>Floating In Space

I gave one or two tries and gave up on/never got back to
>Spiderland
>Velvet Underground and Nico
>Godspeed
>krautrock
>Trout Mask Replica
>Weezer
>>
>>64183237
you know you're on /mu/, right m8?
>>
>>64197670
I haven't been on /mu/ in a while, but is this seriously considered essential or am I taking bait right now? I thought this album was widely regarded as trash.
>>
>>64198510
Its essential because in order to recognize good music, one must be able to identify not good music.
>>
>>64198581
not even creative
