They're my favorite band so I always feel like I'm too biased towards them. The Waiting Room is really nice though. I was a bit worried that after Across Six Leap Years they were going to get a bit regressive but I'm super glad they've continued with The Something Rain's soul sound. I'm a sucker for soul-styled Tindersticks.
I still need to check out their Paris live album they also released this year.

Blackstar, Weezer's White Album, and untitled unmastered are top ones too for me.

that's ok. i feel like the 1975 is something of a litmus test. the band is very much about matty, his personality, charisma, and sex. so it would kind of repel a straight male even if they were otherwise neutral about the music. on the other hand, a gay like me, or a 12yr old girl, would be really drawn to them even if i was otherwise neutral about the music.
it just so happens i really enjoy the music and i also hopelessly want matty's tongue and dick, so i'm a pretty hopeless case on this one

Blackstar & TLOP are tied with it as my top 3, but if I had to pick it'd be the 1975.
Those boys know how to make every layer of each track great...vocal melody, programmed (or not) beats, the guitar and bass bits, that damn synth. Love every aspect of it.

Not really, CRJ was just pop hits, a la 1989 and Grimes' Art Angels (two of my favorite albums of their years). Although I guess if CRJ had "Call Me Maybe" these guys had "Chocolate"?
The 1975 is a full band (ergo, they have fuller songs) – their core is definitely pop, but they weave in electronics to supplement and touch on a few other genres/styles throughout their albums.
They've said that they began when the frontman and drummer would make electronic music and beat-making in college, and then wanted to make pop songs that could fit in that dance-y electronic grid, or something along those lines. All in all, would deffo recommend

This album is good shit from beginning to end, some songs had to grow on me yeah, but currently I think this album is amazing and I'm really weirded out that /mu/ isn't talking too much about it, or even getting any attention on critics.
Listen to it one more time to get it fresh on your memory, I really think it's an AOTY contender.
