honest question—what's the appeal? i can "get" most of the classic/essential bands and such but i really don't understand them, what makes them "essential"

The Soft Bulletin is a really fucking great psychedelic pop album.

well, the soft bulletin is ranked #1 on RYM for neo-psychedelia. the flaming lips were one the early pioneers of what neo psych sounds like in the first place

hmm okay. well i might have to give it a fresh listen, with more of a psychedelia mindset

its a really shitty version of pet sounds

their later albums (embryonic, heady fwends, 7 skies h3, the terror) are some of the only interesting material in modern psych. not really groundbreaking material, but still wonderfully creative and fun

"Neo psych" is such a loosely defined genre that it's impossible to track its development, but there's no way Flips were early enough in the game to be considered "pioneers". That's more like, Spacemen 3 or something.
well, the guy on the right kinda looks like Luke Skywalker from New Hope.
I like Embryonic more than The Soft Bulletin :o

Spacemen were certainly the more pioneering artists of the genre, but the Flips were the force which turned neo-psych into what it is today, rather than an offshoot of post-punk.
Having said that, I think their recent stuff (especially Embryonic and 7 Skies H3) is their best work.
