Blue Cheer and Budgie are nice proto-metal starters.
First five Black Sabbath albums are essential imo.
Judas Priest, Saxon and Iron Maiden makes up for a nice a NWOBHM starter.
Metallica (first three albums), Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Sodom, Kreator and Destruction makes up for nice thrash compilation.
Venom and Motörhead are imo big essentials for many metal genres and thus should not be left out.
Nice Doom starter I´d say is Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Cathedral, Obsessed and Candlemass.
For Stoner stuff Sleep should not be left out in any way.
Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, Orange Goblin are some of my favorites Stoner Rock bands, though not strictly metal per say.
Stoner Doom: Acid King, Acrimony and Electric Wizard are good starters
I dont listen much Black, Death and Sludge so I have no sayings in those.

Go to a show at a bar or nightclub and wait outside of the back where their tour buses generally park. Some venues it's easier than others. Why does metal need vocals anyway? It's kinda pointless even if you try to rationalize the voice as an instrument. Musical language doesn't convey meanings that are as cultural or political as words. Emotional and politicized music can detract from the instrumental performance and dissuade people from listening to it. If metal is supposed to be on par with classical and jazz, why does it need vocal influence from rock and pop?
Sure, there are great instrumental acts, some well-known bands have made neat instrumental tracks, but metal is overwhelmingly burdened by lyrics. The logical progression of metal is to become depoliticized and allow for a new elite scene progressing instrumentation
