oh my bad. i searched yours and it was like 120 on amazon. Most old stereos have an aux in and i have one that's 15-20 years old and still works.
Have a hand-me-down setup consisting of Polk bookshelfs, Paradigm sub, a newish Pioneer and an old school Marantz depending on if I'm listening to records or not. Have some extra shitty Philips I'v been meaning to set up as rears bud I'm quite lazy.
All in all it's certainly not HiFi but it beats a portable speaker any day. And that Paradigm can shake the house if it needs to/feels like it.

Seems more viable if I can make space. How well do stereos play MP3s? They always seemed like more of an audiophile thing and I don't really feel like getting all my music again in FLAC.

Even if the old stereo you pick-up doesn't have an aux in, it's fairly trivial to disconnect the old cd player/cassette cables and solder them to a 3.5mm female jack or pigtails.
