Anyone able to help an amplifier electronics noob in how to calculate if either of these amps I have will have the right ohm inpedence to run this celestion seventy80,(12 inch speaker I got for free, in an old amp I loved sp hoping to put it to good use and upgrade at the same time) cheers~

amp1;
230v ac input
t315mA (fuse)
20 watts
8 inch speaker
(cant seem to find the ohms on the speaker, and as its closed back dont wanna open it only to find out "oh hey I cant")

second amp;
230v input
30w mains input
this thing comfortably drives a 4ohm / 10 watt speaker.

I have a THR5, for bedroom use I honestly think its the best amplifier going. Comes with shitty cubebase for muh songwriting, all the channels sound pretty legit, the effects are decent enough though i will say the reverb is very tasty on them. They fart like nobodies business if you push them too hard but thats why i said bedroom amp.
I have one, so if you want some tones, I dont mind providing some broken playing for you.

I'm fairly new to electric guitar, and I've been noodling around, soloing along with Grateful Dead (Althea is an amazing jam track) but I want to know where I can go from there. I know my pentatonic scales, but what other scales, or lessons, or music could I incorporate? What I really like is to learn a style similar to Bob weirs rhythmic playing. Any tips or help?

You can never fully know your pentatonic scales. Master them. Until you can superimpose the entire pentatonic scale in all 12 keys over the fretboard with instantaneous retention and you can play all the possible patterns. You don't know your pentatonic scales. Learn them again.

I don't think I can improvise on the spot as a bassist, but I CAN come up with a decent bassline given the guitar parts (as sheet music or with tabs + tuning). Is that good enough in a band? Or do I need to get better at spontaneous playing/playing by ear?
>>
>>64082581
Honestly depends on the band dynamic
If a band writes most of their stuff during jams then you probably won't do as well, than a band that usually writes stuff out on pen and paper
>>
>>64068419

thanks,.
>>
>>64082692
What is more common/usually the case? Couldn't the guitarists quickly write down whatever they figured out during a jam and I can work on it from home?
I mean, I'm not completely useless during a jam, if you tell me to hold the root note I can keep up, but I can't imagine coming up with something on the spot, I simply lack the experience for that.

hmm, I got it 5 years ago I believe. Guess its no longer in production with the Fender Japan deal.
And i don't know why, but its a finish I never ever see anyone with, one of the reasons it intrigued me so much. I feel like its exclusive to a few models (and Japan of course).

Bought it new on Amazon, from a Jap seller. At the time there was also a few of them on Ishibashi but I stuck with amazon for familiarity.

I see a "Fender Japan Exclusive Classic 60s Telecaster Custom" I think they might've just changed the name to this or something? Looks exactly like mine.

I recently started playing guitar. I have an acoustic and electric. I have a book that teaches me to play guitar but it doesn't help me. I want to know what's the best way to master guitar. I know I got to practice, that's what I do every day. I'd certainly love a teacher but I don't have money to pay for lessons.

So tell me, how do I teach myself to play guitar?

Audition stories?

>everyone in the band is about 2x my age, all super talented, all pro gear as fuck
>thank god they had a giant Marshall stack there for me to go out of
>as I set up, the band launches into a note-for-note cover of Dream Theater's "Dance of Eternity"
>realized I was waaaay out of my depth musically
>bombed hard from nervousness but band was cool about it
>leave audition, head to bar for jazz jam session
>never hear from the band again

They eventually wound up recruiting a super-skilled guy who was closer to their age group, but they haven't really gone anywhere with their music. Last I heard their lead singer left (he was actually the least talented member anyway, so...)

Also the keys player was a statistics professor at one of the major universities in the city.

>>
>>64092068
Might get kind of stale after a few songs. Back in its heyday, it seemed like every metalcore band wrote their entire albums in C minor.

Try taking some of your ideas and transposing them in different keys. I actually really like writing in C minor (standard tuning, not drop C) because it's so different from E minor.
>>
>>64092157
Yeah, I mean as a genre it definitely attracts people looking to push their own boundaries more than other rock styles (with the possible exception of fusion).

I learned about musicianship between that audition and now. I had been playing guitar for seven years by that point and while I was technically skilled, I hadn't really developed my ear that much so I was kind of put off of figuring out songs/melodies by ear. Improv sessions + many hours spent at home copying my favorite players' licks and phrasing + learning to play keyboards has really helped my general musicality. I auditioned for the lead guitar spot in a different prog band a few months ago and got the gig. We're about to start doing shows and recording our demo.
>>
>>64092229
i'll check C minor out then. Ems just so damn comfy for me its like my hobbit hole i dont want to leave
>>
>>64092383
Yeah, Em is a really intuitive key for guitarists because we generally tend to pedal off the low E string when writing riffs. It's definitely helpful to know another instrument, too. Playing in many different keys is much more intuitive on piano.

>>
>>64092801
I mean they could all play and jam well. What's the point of learning any really technical piece other than to show off, esp. doing prog? I was just blown away that they were using it as their warm-up song. That being said, their original compositions seemed to be missing something and I think that what they were missing was energy, or a sense of raw emotion. The guy they went with instead plays like a soulless shred machine, but they were all kind of like that anyway so he was probably a better fit. The guys in the band I'm with now are much more creative and the energy that lends itself to the kind of music I like playing is definitely there.

i don't know if i need 7 strings or more for that
I assumed because these types of guitars seem to be popular and I assumed I need one to play the music that is created on these kinds of guitars

i'm not gonna change pickups on my strat becuase I like it the way it is and I'd rather buy a new cheaper guitar
>>
>>64095342

teles are beautiful imo,
mustangs and jaguars are ugly as fuck

but cheap teles are trash,
if you get a tele get nothing below an american standard or better vintage,

g&l teles are good too ( bluesboy )
>>
>>64095337

Okay fine. Since you don't want to 'ruin' your Strat with a humbucker, here's what I can tell you.

Since you are playing heavier music, you are probably gonna look at brands like Ibanez, Schecters, Jackson, maybe Carvin.

All of the 'metal' guitar usually have jumbo frets, flat fretboard, thin necks. With that kind of configuration you can achieve low action, and somehow easier to shred because of the flat fretboard .

Ibanez generally have the thinnest neck, and widest fretboard. I don't know what's your budget, but the cheaper models are typically made in Indonesia. Their Prestige models, the so-called 'flagship' line, is made in Japan. They have the Premium line which is made in Korea, but I have no experience with it. Bad thing about Ibanez is, they usually come with their own pickups, not SD or dimarzio but this seems to be changing in the recent years.

Schecters are mostly made in Korea. Good thing about them is they typically offer SD pickups, and sustainiac pickups. Which is good if you are into that kind of stuff.

I can't comment on the other brands because I don't have any experience with them.

Also, whether you need a 7 string or not depends on how you are going to utilise the high E string. If you are not going to need any notes on it, you could just downtune your 6 string. Most bands play on both 6 and 7 strings, some even 8.

>>64095319
Why doesn't it sound right and why doesn't it feel right?
>>
>>64095437
i found a schecter i like, im just not sure if i'll take the 6 or 7 string version

im wondering if theres some songs that i cant
learn/play on a 6 string,
most of the videos i watched had the guitarists playin gnormal downtuned 6 string guitars

>>Why doesn't it sound right and why doesn't it feel right?

i don't know what kind of music you play,
but have you ever played a vintage strat with a vintage radius neck and fretsize?

a strat sounds like a classic strat, and the newer strats sound somewhat less like the classic strats

but even between them and schecter or ibanez style superstrats is a big difference in how they sound

imo classic strats and teles fit the "older" music better

and when it comes to the neck feel, theres lots of different fender strat neck types, but even between all of them the difference isnt as big as for example between a 57V neck and a ibanez style neck

both leads to different ways of playing imo, and classic necks are more comfortable if you play classic chord/rhythm based music like rnb instead of the type of fast metal music that is popular now

in the end most would agree that you can play anything on any guitar, but some types of music fit better on some types of guitars
>>
>>64095543
i meant ibanez not schecter
>>
>>64095543

What do you typically listen to. Like I said it's hard to get either a 6 or a 7 to fit all. Since many bands use all 6,7 and 8. If you want to be safe, get a 7.

Also, try to get a hardtail. I know lots of band play in different tunings all the time, for example Periphery's Omega features lots of different tunings. But some just stick to standard B.

I agree with you on vintage guitars don't sound the same compared to your typical superstrats, but that can be changed, though not to a full extent with pickup swaps. Unless you want to bring tonewood into the arguement..

And neck feel is down to individual preference. CHON plays lots of chordal stuff and they mainly play Ibanez. Yngwie Malmsteem plays a vintage Strat.
>>
>>64095553

>> Yngwie Malmsteem plays a vintage Strat

this is the one I picked

theres a 6 and 7 string version of it

i found the older blue version it in a guitar store last year its very light and thin and the wood feels nice
>>

>>64095703

If you are mainly going to just play the rhythm section, I would say just get the 6 string and downtune to taste. Unless you want to go retardly drop G or whatever Meshuggah is doing, then you might need a 7 or a 8 for that super thick strings.

Have you looked into an amp yet. Djent is heavily dependent on the amp.

Also that guitar looks neat.
>>
>>64095732
i don't think i can afford an amp on top of the guitar now

i mainly play with the guitar plugged in into my computer or via my phone interface

i have a 100watt marshall head at home but i can't use it because it's too loud to play in my room

i thought about getting a smaller amp before,

what kind of amp do i need?
>>
>>64095800
i thought about getting a used vox ac15 or 10
but that was more for the classic rock type music

it probably doesnt fit for the type i want to learn now?
>>
>>64095800

Oh you play with an interface? Neat. Then you should be all set with Bias Desktop or Bias FX. I think all the djenty guys are using it now. The Axe FX is pretty popular too, periphery uses it

So what is the difference between a Jazzmaster's pickup, and a P90? Are they the same size? And what's the difference between a Strat and a Jazzmasters trem?

I'm tempted to sell my amp and get an Axe-fx. I know they're stupid expensive, but if I can genuinely get any sound out of it, it's surely worth it, right?

Can more advanced guitar fags chime in and help a bit?
Pic related is passage from one violin etude I've learned and I'm trying to bring it up to expected speeds which is around 120bpm.
I know some wankers will laugh but playing that *right* at 120 is no joke.

I've written the tab as is expected to be played in single position, even added fingerings and correct alt picking which is strict almost through the entire etude bar one particularly difficult passage with massive string skips and inversion of the picking.

Is it doable to be played clean at 120 as written? All the skips, finger rolls, etc, are making it extremely difficult to do so. I know it's possible to cheat with position changes and legato but that kills the whole point of learning it the hard way to develop better technique.

Some people take care of their guitars. It doesn't have to look like complete shit just because you play it heavily.

I don't even really like "djent" music, I just like the possibilities the equipment presents me.

Those add 2 lower strings, right? Why do you want bassists to hate you?
>>
>>64096527

Seems doable ... But not easy.

120 shouldnt be too hard if you get certain skilz under control

i find the tab, written as is, to be very comfortable and you need to remember every change in position will cost energy. Keep it the way it is.

Picking is fine too. There are different schools of picking. Pure alternating vs. efficient picking. I aim to be proficient in both and in this example i would without a doubt use pure alternating.

Dont use finger rolls. They arent gonna help you in this situation. The f on the second count of the second bar can just as easily be played with (3)

String skips are a bitch, but this is actualy a good exercise to get that technique under control. they shouldnt be too much of a problem if you stick to alternating picking

Also legato will make it loose the bite you get out of picking every note.

If youre playing dirty you can get a good effect out of a half palm mute and on clean put a scrunchy around your strings close to the nut to stop unwanted open strings ringing out ;)

could I theoretically use an amplug as mic input to a pc to record shit?

P90s are humbucker-sized single coils. Jazzmaster-pickups are essentially the same.

Strat trem is a massive metal block held back by strings and with the trem and bridge in one piece. Jazzmaster trems are separated from the bridge, and more or less free-floating.
>>
>>64096782
how do you stop gunk from oil building up on your fingerboard??

>>64096784
The AxeFx is amazing and i think the main reason people hate is it bc of djent and petrucci getting shitty sounds from it

>>64096813

I was thinking of palm muting it but it feels like cheating as part of the idea is precisely "gentle, effortless" playing with all the notes clean and no buzzes and clacks.
It's true the finger rolls really make it difficult to clean it up at high speed but surprisingly I'm getting more proficient with them so when I meet them under more natural circumstances they aren't scary at all, sweeping for example.

I'm trying to get that technique up since I want to play some baroque pieces with classical musicians as there isn't much else around here. And note by note is requirement there rather than badge of prestige.
>>
Spent £365 (Roughly $520) on a 2001 reissue of the 70s MiM Strat - natural wood. With hard case, texas special pickups, and all the original receipts and tags.

I'm now financially destitute but was it worth it?
>>
>>64096852
i dont quite get what you want here. The Amplu doesnt have any outputs, i dont see how a pc can record any sound without receiving any sound...
>>
>>64096894
>how do you stop gunk from oil building up on your fingerboard??
You clean every few months, what the hell dude? Do you never clean your fucking guitars?
>>
>>64096959

Alright 15 minutes of practice, this is what I got. It's pretty sloppy though, seems hard to do at 120 bpm.

>>64096782
I don't mean it has to look like a full on relic, that literally looks like a guitar that has never been touched before.
>>
>>64096993
I mean use the amplug's headphone jack as a mic input to my pc, treating the audio output from the amplug as mic input
>>
>>64096893

How does the Jazzmaster's trem lock itself? I read that they have this feature that locks it down. Does that mean it essentially functions as a hard tail?

Also, are p90s and jazzmaster pickups the same size?
>>
>>64096106
Jazzmaster pickups have actual magnets as the polepieces, whereas p90s have a bar magnet under the pickup that hooks up to magnetic polepieces (but not magnets themselves)
>>
>>64096959
>I was thinking of palm muting it but it feels like cheating as part of the idea is precisely "gentle, effortless" playing with all the notes clean and no buzzes and clacks.
But at 120 youre going to run the risks of letting to many notes sound at the same time. You dont really want this tho. Its essentially an extension of your instrument.

>It's true the finger rolls really make it difficult to clean it up at high speed but surprisingly I'm getting more proficient with them so when I meet them under more natural circumstances they aren't scary at all, sweeping for example.
Cool. Ive always prefered using different fingers when the roll has to go back and forth. With sweeps you usually play all the notes ascending or all of the note descending so it makes it easier to clearly articulate. But then again if it works for you, fine. Its actually a pretty cool skil to have, i might look into developing it

>>64096961
>all the original receipts and tags.
I never get what the added value is of this... like if you need to check the date cant you just search the SN on fenders website.

Anyway it sounds pretty good. Like as long as its the best guitar in that price range in terms of sound and playability to you then its a good deal.
>>
>>64097038
You're looking at a fairly low res picture from far away, why do you expect to see any wear on them? I have basses that are 20 years old and they still look pristine, you'd have to get up close and inspect them in person to see the micro scratches that have accumulated over the years. Literally everything else comes down to taking care of it.
>>
>>64096961
Decent deal famalam.
>>
>>64097088
It's one of my dream guitars and it showed up in a local ad, the original tags are just a noice memento I guess, show's the previous owner really cared for it to.
>>
>>64097002
i never get them as clean as the guitars in the pics. mainly with my rosewood guitars theres always some that stays behind.

>>64097022
youre almost at 120 so you just need a bit of tightening up and youre almost there

>>64097050
fuck im an idiot
that should work although im not even sure its needed. You see the guitar should produce the same voltage level a pic mic produces. So if youre using the standard mic input it inst necessary. The amplug should make it stereo and give a little boost, so yes its better just not manditory

>>64097051
>How does the Jazzmaster's trem lock itself?
theres a small round metal piece, flush with the metal plate. You can push this back (away from the pick ups) and it will grab the floating metal plate that is connected to the strings
>>
>>64097211
cool, I dont have a mic to record with besides my phone so I was curious if it was viable
>>
>>64097022

That's excellent anon.

I've been sort hitting a wall around 105 and getting quite sloppy past it (can be heard in the vocaroo@110 of mine). The part with the B pedal tone seems to be the hardest to get clean for some reason and I might isolate and just practice independently.

All in all these etudes are considerably more fun that equivalent guitar exercises. I'm surprised how fun trying to tackle them actually is.

>>64097088

Getting clean rolling is pretty darn hard but I think it's very useful as it saves a lot of movement, and if practiced to the point of feeling "natural" it could give a lot more freedom. The pinky rolls are insane though, especially for my micro stick fingers - my palm barely fills the first two frets. That's exactly why I want total finger control. Whatever people play with 3 or even 2 fingers I have to use 4.
