The band's music as a whole would probably be better off without Kiedis, but I think without him, they lose a lot of their character, which is what draws a lot of people to the band. Even just watching the way they all interact with each other shows they're all really close friends, and I think if suddenly Kiedis dropped, they'd either go through a musical shift similar to when they lost John (both times), or just retire alltogether. He's not very talented, but he's very charismatic, which makes him the perfect frontman for RHCP.

Only considering rock bassists:

He's distinctive, a trait not so common among rock bassists.

His bass songwritting skills are very basic, while the bass has a strong presence, it rarely leads. Stu Zender and Les Claypool usually take the cake when writting rock songs with lead bass.

His technique is not half bad, considering the guy wasn't even a dedicated bass player to begin with, however people like Tony Levin and Trevor Dunn are better dual type bassists, MIYA better at plucking and Squier was better at picking.

His freestyle is awful and almost inexistent, Sean Malone's work in Cynic's Focus usually takes the cake here.

His tone and setup is good, not very clean, not very dirty, well adjusted.

Overall, he's better than most rock bassists, but not near the best.
>>
>>64072951

to be considered a good musician you have to actually make good music, not just masturbate your instrument at high tempos

True...most rock bassists are quite anonymous. Among distinctive rock bassists, you could name Paul McCartney, Gene Simmons, John Entwistle, Geezer Butler, and Nikki Sixx however aside from Entwistle all of those guys also had a part in songwriting or lead vocals or both.

>>64073062

Even during the slovak era the bass driven songs were very simple in terms of structure, which is not bad, considering the most memorable basslines are as simple as you get; the raw technique and tempo tho, very enjoyable.

I believe the arrival of Frusciante improved his songwriting skills.

Are you the same guy or a different guy?

I'm the guy who's sister saw Motorhead. Mine was in diapers during the BSSM days so I'm pretty sure she wasn't fucking Anthony Kiedis backstage.

The only truly wtf album of theirs is OHM.

And even then, it's not without its purpose.

I gotta give them a hand for consistently writing songs that come from the heart instead of what they think is marketable. Which is more than you can say for some shitty band like Nickelback. "Yeah we could make better music if we wanted, but we're doing just fine with the shit we put out, so why improve?"
>>
>>64077641
They do write marketable music though. Most their stuff is poppy radio-friendly shit.
>>
>>64078528
Well...that's like saying Cobain wasn't real or played from the heart because he wrote songs with hooks on them.
>>
>>64064189
no. without John barely anyone would give a fuck about them
