Listen to any of them, depending on era/type of jazz you like--very few were actually bad. He was a genius. Only offensively bad one I've heard is Tutu
>>

Definitely listen to 'Somethin else' by Cannonball adderly.. The only album was sideman for during his Kind of Blue days
>>
the best part of jazz is that even failures can be interesting listening

but since time is limited and there's more to jazz than Miles, there are maybe about 15 essential ones that anyone wanting to get familiar with jazz should hear

in the minds of people that don't count jazz as one of their favorite styles, Miles Davis' fusion period crowds out his "purist jazz" period, the same way his Columbia period crowds out the earlier history of his discography, the same way he crowds out other jazz musicians

he had John Coltrane playing on some of his best albums for Presige: Cookin' Relaxin' Workin' Steamin'

and before that he was Charlie Parker's trumpet player on his legendary Dial and Savoy recordings from '45-'50

find out what's so great about those earlier recordings before you jump on the fusion train, classifying it as "requisite jazz" in your collection so you never have to explore further

He did occasionally play music which you'd be hard pressed to describe as not being free.
>>
Miles in the Sky doesnt get enough love
>>
Why did Miles play a lot less on his fusion stuff? I mean, he had some cool sidemen and all but he takes so much less solo space but when he is soloing, it's almost always awesome.
>>
>>64030750
He had health problems and a renewed dependence on drugs and alcohol.
>>
>>64026378
his first album like you would any other artist
>>
>>64030891
Hadn't he manage to get off the heroin by then? I mean, he was obviously still doing coke and whatever but I thought his drug abuse had peaked in the 50s.
