Hexagram, Needles and Pins and Minerva are a pretty good string of songs. those and Deathblow make it alright just not my favorite.
what's your opinion of Gore
Massive, massive hype on the boards i go to. It may be my contrarian side waking up by i think it's super muddy and disjointed. I think Acid Hologram, PI, Geometric Headdress and Xenon are pretty goddamn boaring.
The upside is this album makes Koi No Yokan and Diamond Eyes look way better by comparison and i think, if there's a new album in the future, more people will agree on how great,atmospheric, and concise DE and KNY are.
That being said, it's pretty alright. Not great but alright.
Kind of wild how we can all disagree over a band we all like. Fucking message boards man.
Listening for the first time. As with most other things I've heard by them, I like it but not enough to actively listen to it when there are other things I could be listening to.

I'm pretty sure if you're a djent fan you can fully enjoy DE. But djent fans are known to be quite simple minded even though their music is perceived as "complex". In my opinion SNW is as complex as Deftones ever was and no odd-time signature chugging will change that.

I've heard people say they miss the djent sound in Deftones because Steph Carpenter has an 8-string guitar and enjoys Meshuggah. And Meshuggah is good, that's why being influenced by them should also be good [????]

eh.. meshuggah is a ''i got to be in the mood' type of band. and they've spawned countless fucking clones.That's why i dig stephen's approach so much. Check out Leathers. That fucker isn't chuggin at all in that fucker but the riff still stays and is pretty heavy, and suits the sound.
The dude's pretty tasteful with his shit for the most part, he's not attila-ing it up or anything. You've seen the butcher is a pretty chill, heavy, damn near sexy riff.
Idk i wonder how much one's perception of self affects their enjoyment of deftones, and music in general. I know there's the feeling side of music but plenty of people use it as an avenue of self expression and a means of gaining friends/companionship.
So one would think i negative stereotype of djent fans would more or less close off their ears for anything low tuned and heavy.

As a pleb who completely misjudged Deftones as a shitty nu-metal band, this is a beautiful discovery. I've been working my way backwards, so far I think Saturday Night Wrist is my favorite but this is really great.

They're one of the only bands from that scene that turned themselves into something far better. Even then, their nu-metal stuff is still fantastic. They don't have a single bad album.

I hated prayers/triangles at first but now I love it. Only Deftones are capable of doing this.

for me it has been a grower. I was let down when i first heard it but I've been returning to the album more and more and currently I think it's a fantastic record.

Yeah it goes to show that sometimes you have to digest music before forming a concrete opinion on it.
When I first listened to this I would have rated it a 6.5 but now id say it's more like an 8.
It's still hard to compare their work but this coming out does make their previous albums shine a bit more so I'm happy.

i did too. my first reaction was 'yup, that's what new deftones would sound like.' it sounded like something they pushed out for the fans, but weren't really digging themselves.
but hearing it again it sounds like they are into it and enjoy playing, so that helps me get into it more. dumb, but that matters to me - if they're still sincere, count me in.

I can't compare this record to any of the others. Not because it is better or something like that, I just feel it's different from all of their others. I really like it but it's like they took every part of their sound and build something in a completly different way this time
so far the only song i don't really like is Doomed User. All the others have grown on me and I still find something to discover, it's a really beautiful album.
i like it, i give it a 7.5/10. doomed user, geometric headdress, hearts/wires, xenon, phantom bride and rubicon are the tracks i'm digging the most

I like old Deftones because Chino's voice was atmospheric and the guitars were raw. (Example: Feiteiceria or whatever) Now everything is atmospheric and blurry. This is why I avoid sludge/doom and bands like Neurosis
