Although industrial hip hop is okay as a genre definition, I think that ultimately Death Grips are their own genre.
I don't think experimental hip hop is appropriate because while they are changing up their sound between albums, I feel like their sound isn't the result of conscious experimentation and planned innovation, as much as something that developed naturally out of their interests and experiences.
To me death grips are what metal is to rock music: a heavier, noiser version of the former, with darker themes and aesthetics.
Something hip hop really needed, and I'm retrospect makes me wonder how it didn't exist earlier (bar a few horrorcore albums)
exmil starts off pretty well a hip hop album. The beats are just a little glitchier and the vocals are literally shouted. Then Money Store basically is the same bar samples. GP was a bit of a precursor to NOTM stuff and shows Andys prowess in dicking around. NLDW, they strip everything away and it honestly leaves their rawest fucking album to date. NOTM may be their best work and is possibly the pinnacle of the three honing their talents to a science, and it's a shame they really can't do these live. And finally JD. The start of the record is the almost standard insane vocals and glitchy industrial beats. But late into the album, shit morphs into like prog Rock and punk almost.

I've always just tried to simplify it as "industrial or experimental hip hop". Even just adding the fact that it has punk elements kind of helps. I don't think there's much more to it than that.

Death Grips uses hip hop as the foundation for an assortment of all sorts of new sounds. It's a very modern band that is also breaking new ground for influencing future music, comparable to The Velvet Underground. Trust me, I'm literally from the future.
