But the 70s were the worst.
>>
>>63899108
The 80's had some great stuff, Double Nickels on the dime comes to mind.
>>
metal and all it's sub genres.
Music became far more focused on money, not to say this didn't happen previous to the 80s but it's far more obvious.
>>
80s had like, big black, pixies, branca, early swans, sonic youth

pretty great decade for noise/alt rock desu senpai

Yes, because the 60s at their peak were better than the 80s at their peak, but on average all years considered, the 80s were better. It was still the worst decade from a relative point of view, unlike the late 60s which were relatively great.

80s was great
90s was shit
>>
>>63899518
The early 60s weren't that much interesting as the early 80s, I think we can agree on that?
>>
>>63899553
wasn't there a good amount of interesting stuff happening in jazz around this time?
>>
>>63899504
you can say 1966-69 maybe, but looking at the decade as a whole the 80s were probably better.

http://movingtheriver.com/2015/01/07/12-reasons-why-the-80s-were-the-greatest-ever-music-decade/
>>
>>63899564
Yes, and so did in the early 80s too, among many other genres too.

>>63899565
Yes, that's what I'm saying.
The 60s (late) was the decade with the greatest quality improvement ratio though.
>>
>>63899600
i'd agree with that as well, early 90s were also a huge quality improvement IMO
>>
>>63899659
>grunge
>a huge quality improvement

What from? Hair Metal?
>>
>>63899108
2010s is trash from a "pleb" standpoint.
The 70s, 80s and some of the 90s pleb music was pretty cool in comparison to all this shitty techno pop trash.
>>
>>63899302
Holy shit, kill yourself
>>
>>63899794
Why are you so mean?
Where do you disagree? Maybe we can get to an agreement.
At least I explained my reasoning and someone else agreed, so I don't seem to be too far off.

>>63899659
Yup
>>
>>63899832
Im not being mean bb.

But seriously the 80s are not better than the 60s peak.
The 60s consistently had great music.

Also the 2000s were full of bland indie crap that if it was not for the progress made in the 60s, would not exist.

I do slightly agree with where you placed the 90s.

50s at the end is good

10s are not over yet, so I'd place it lower
>>
>>63899729
like grunge was the only genre of the 90s... how about loveless, spiderland, 36 chambers, illmatic, dummy, low end theory, souvlaki, selected ambient works, and yes even grunge. and that's only counting the early 90s, literally just reading it off the charts on rym

versus what, the the talking heads? iron maiden? other than the cure and the cocteau twins there's really not much there of substance

The '80s were awesome. The advent of MTV. Post Punk branched out into so many genres it made your head spin. Madonna turned a whole generation of young women into utter sluts. Hair metal. Goth was good. New Wave. The New Romantics. 4AD was at it's peak. Punk got harder and american. Noise rock got amazing on Rough Trade. Neo Psychedelica was born. Wax Trax for some great industrial. EBM. Detroit House. Was a great decade.
>>
>>63899858
B-but you still hurt my feelings!

The whole 80s were indeed better than the late 60s, because it had more great music even if the best of the best wasn't as good. Can we agree on that?

You don't meassure the quality of a decade for the bad things it had, but for the good (or lack of good) music it featured. Especially considering the bad music from the past is each time less and less available today.

Yeah, 10s should have been at the end, after the 60s

>>63899916
Yes, the 80s were awesome, but not as awesome as every other post-50s decade.
>>
>>63899866
You have'nt heard much '80s music have you? If you like the Cocteaus I would suggest you delve deeper into the other 4AD artists from the '80s like Throwing Muses, Dif Juz and The Wolfgang Press. You're just skimming the surface.
>>
>>63899981
I know. I was only skimming the surface with both decades to prove a point. these are the top albums of their respective decades, and they don't really hold up to one another. not saying there isn't a ton of great 80s music that I love, but on the whole I'd argue that the early 90s were an overall improvement across a variety of genres. hell, even the wire made a better 80s album before the 80s even happened, you can't say there wasn't a dip in ****overall**** quality, without cherrypicking favorite artists
>>
>>63899232
what the fuck is wrong with you?
>>
>>63900128
I'm not going to get into a shitfest with you. ALL decades have great music. Personally I feel that no decade was better than another. Albums have blown my mind from all of them. You just have to know where to look
>>
>>63900191
this is a thread that's literally about discussing and comparing the different decades. why would you even bother commenting "no decade was better than another", didn't you come to /mu/ for music discussion?

and thanks for the recommendations, i'll check those three bands out. big 4ad fan.
>>
>>63899108
The 80s were a shit tier decade in pretty much every aspect.
It created key change-core, and pretty much took away people's moral ceiling for cheesiness.
Cars, with exceptions that you can count on one hand, LITERALLY ALL looked like shit. People straight up forgot how to draw roundness, everything had fucking corners and looked uninteresting.
And don't get me started on fashion. Jeans up to your belly button, mullets, pornstaches were all a-okay. No one shaved genitals or armpits, and women all had bird's nests on their heads instead of hair.

You're thinking of the 70s.

The 80s were great for music I enjoy.
The 00s were not so good for music I enjoy.
Pop music is essentially the same across decades imo.

look up Earthworks for 80's jazz
>>
they aren't - you had harmolodic masters such as Ornette Coleman, Ronald Shannon Jackson and James Blood Ulmer all making great music during the 80s. on that count alone, I would argue the 80s were more interesting than the 90s.

the 90s "alt-rock" music wave led by Nirvana's success just just a popularization of the 80s bands exploring this stuff first - and it was much more interesting and exciting first go around.

the main reason why the 00s might be more interesting than the 90s isn't musical but sociological. the way the internet has changed the way we interact with music, how much more we have access to, how easy it is to find, its affect on people etc.
