>>63879062
>>63879079
Here you fuckin go lad
Pop with a twang Nashville bullshit is horrible, trail songs, American folk songs and country western are all good genres
Country is the final frontier for /mu/

I said he's a better musician. If you wanna argue Cash made better music you could but he's objectively not half the musician Mayer is. Since I care about music I'd rather listen to Mayer.
>>63879040
>Is country music completely cancer?
t. suburban white teen and Kanye West fanboy
>>63879356
being a mediocre guitar improviser isnt anything to brag about. why aren't you just listening to McLaughlin 24/7 then, if you care about musicianship?
>>63879429
He's an excellent song writer. His albums have barely got any improvisation on them. Go listen to Continuum and show me when Cash wrote that many good songs.
>>63879040
This, or Red Headed Stranger, by Willie Nelson.
Anyone who says country music is cancer probably hasn't listened to very much country.

>>63879193
it says grace of god retard. hes saying he was made and proud to be southern because god made him southern
>>63879040

>>63879501
Idk whatever the fuck roots songwriter means, but I assume that's just the qualifier you have to use to put Cash's nursury rhymes in a category where they can compete with John Mayer's masterful talent, but I assure you Mayer is great at that cheesy stuff too.

Seriously, I normally can't listen to country (even Cash t b h) but I could listen to Merle all the time.

big fan of whiskeytown, give this a listen
>I hate country but I like Johnny Cash, I don't even really consider him country
If you spent 5 minutes looking for similar artists with a sound you like, you'd realize there are plenty of guys in the genre that rival Cash. You just like Johnny cause it's cool to like Johnny.
>>63882523
This. Old Boots New Dirt may be a meme but it's a good album.
It's kinda like ITAOTS or Death Grips. We meme it because we love it.
>>63881877
There was a comfy thread about him yesterday for a while, him dying seemed to momentarily bring out a few folks that actually know shit about Country music other than JC and Memes Van Zandt.
>>63879677
Dubs confirm autism
yall niggas retarded
This is the most patrician country album
>>63879458
that album is depressing as fucking shit. i don't think i've ever heard anything quite like that. know anything similar?
Country music is a genre like any other, the further you dig, the better stuff u find.
I'm a big fan of The Flying Burrito Brothers. They do a cover the Roling Stone's song 'Wild Horses' that is leaps and bounds better than the original.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MchWI3sLUQo
Jason Isbell is pretty much the face of alt-country.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaUCDqWzy1k&nohtml5=False
And, if you like Wilco at all, check out Uncle Tupelo, who has Tweedy and the other band members that went on to form Wilco after Farrar left.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7CGkuLEs5U&nohtml5=False
got more if u guys want
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yojUpMPt2vk
Graham Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams, Hank Thompson, The Flying Burrito Brothers... Mostly music made before the 80s. Everything after that, up until now has been garbage Walmart country.
Some Alt-Country bands are good, old Wilco, Neko Case, Old 97s, that Ween album.
>>63882868
I wish I knew of something similar. I want more of this album. I've yet to listen to any of his other material, so I'm hoping it's kinda like this.
There's just something really unique about Looks Like Rain. The little recordings of rain between songs, and those constantly ringing bells in the background. There's something almost mystical about it. And don't get me started on the choir vocals on some of the songs. Holy fuck I really love this album.
>>63882827
havent heard of this guy,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSHNITpnuPY
listened to it, not bad
thanks anon
>>63883076
np anon
I suggest listening to the whole album as, the songs are all consistently quite great but as a unit the album is much greater than the sum of its parts
It's honestly a toss up between this one and Cipher. 12 Golden Country Greats is also a based album
>>63883073
https://rateyourmusic.com/list/MK_/like_the_music_of_townes_van_zandt__try_these_albums_/
Nothing on here is too similar to Looks Like Rain (or Townes Van Zandt, really), but this list is a good way to dig into the progressive/outlaw country movement.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtDLN4LoPZA
lol
>>63879040
Hank williams bitch
townes va zandt isnt even country you plebs
singer song writer dressed up as country for hipsters
>>63883228
The hipsters came to Townes in the same way the hipsters came to Marty Robbins, not the other way around.
And singer-songwriter as we now know it is pretty indebted to country. If Hank Williams came out with the same exact set of songs two decades later he'd have been thought of as a singer-songwriter
Gothic country counts.
Townes Van Zandt > any other singer singwriter
So yeah some country is good.
>>63882702
yeah but moo liking it, is a huge red flag when considering whether or not to listen to something. seriously though, moo has shit taste for the most part
>>63883386

>>63884220
Anyone who likes Buck or Merle should check out Wynn Stewart. He was one of the progenitors of the Bakersfield Sound and had one of the most emotive, expressive voices is country music. He delivered each individual line with careful inflections to maximize the emotions they evoked, whereas most singers just belt the words out.

The Highwaymen:
Johnny Cash – Vocals, Guitar
Waylon Jennings – Vocals, Guitar
Kris Kristofferson – Vocals, Guitar
Willie Nelson – Vocals, Guitar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbfW-WmLCZU&nohtml5=False
So sadly underrated.
>>63884979
It's weird, I love Johnny and Willie and like Kris and don't mind Waylon but I've never liked that album.I think it's the 80's production and hearing the title track every fucking time I play a greatest-hits collection by any of the artists involved.
Anyway, early Willie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whrlLDetLAg
>>63884979
Eh, I like the Highwaymen to a certain extent but none of them were at the high point of the careers, creatively or otherwise
>>63885109
i'll see your early career Willie and raise you one late-career Willie. this album's an underrated gem.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8sDty4bFJM
>>63885349
The album seems pretty good, but that song doesn't add much to the original.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjaFyhkGpLE
The .357 String Band - Fire And Hail
or Turnpike Troubadours - Diamonds & Gasoline
Those are my top ones that I think of first
When the Mekons went country, they made the best work of their career.
>>63885454
That was the point but yes it's a good time. T Bone Burnett producing. It's Willie's answer to Johnny Cash's American recordings. Here's another late-career Willie album that I love. This one was produced by Ryan Adams.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxYykhvV-A0
John Denver - Poems Prayers and Promises (Love you Grandma)
Kris Kristofferson - Kristofferson
Johnny Cash - Johhny Cash and his Hot Blue Guitar
Hank III - Straight to Hell
Hank Jr. - Fuck it. I like all the Hank Williamses fuck yaself.
Willie - Milk Cow Blues
>>63879040
You country fucks were responsible for cotton eyed Joe so fuck you
>>63885725
>(Love you Grandma)
>>63885725
Reminder that Hank Jr. is the Mike Love of country music.
>>63885815
The mainstream turned it into a meme the same way /mu/ turned Aldean into a meme. The only man who ever did right by remixing traditional folk songs was Moby.
>>63879095
john mayer is shit lol
He can play guitar well but all his songs are faggy and lame
>>63885998
That's Charlie Rich bud.

Sounds like Uncle Tupelo. I didn't really care for No Depression but I like Wilco so I'll check it out. Thanks.
>>63880789
>better lyrics than dylan
nah
>>63885869
She died 4 days ago. I'm not doing very well.
>>63886065
Outside of his cheesy 70's pop shit, Charlie Rich was amazing. He could hardly be classified as a country singer, doing just as much blues and pop/rock and even jazz.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN0C-p77W1M

>>63885815
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFG9eVbkq70
>>63886189
True. I feel the same way about John Denver. That tribute album proved that his songs were solid they just seemed wussy coming from him. But someone like Ray Charles could take a song like "Country Roads" to the next level.
