They're pretty comparable in quality. AC seem desperate to carve out a new sound for themselves while Deakin seems stuck in the past. All things considered, I thought Painting With was a bit more admirable.

anyone who rates PW higher than a 6/10 either lives and breathes contrarianism or has no sense of melody, songwriting, or arrangement.
there is nothing appealing about PW, the songs go nowhere, the vocal effects are forced and do nothing but annoy the shit out of the listener, the synths are incredibly monotonous and there isn't even any actual instrumentation to distract you from them. you're either lying to us or lying to yourself if you like this album.

PW is dry, repetitive and forgettable apart from Floridada. Sleep Cycle is lush, hypnotic and has everything I loved in SJ + those field recordings make it sound so spacious.
