I'm looking for some modern triple meter (waltzy) music. I'm up for pretty much any genre.
Examples:
"Beneath the Brine": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywIgQBnBndI
"To My Dream": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMzkLGFzdu8

The last song on thank your lucky stars is waltzy, but I think its 12/4, which is basically 4 notes per measure but each split into thirds. It kind of has a 60's prom vibe.

3/4 is underrated. I noticed a few songs on this album I listened to recently. The rest of the songs are bangers too. They seem to reserve their "waltzes" for some of their gloomiest stuff.

Believe it or not 12 can be divided by 3's as well. Never listened to the song, but you're making it sound like 12/4 by default is 4/4, and not 3/4.

I think this is also 12/4. You can tell by counting 1-and-a, 2-and-a, 3-and-a, 4-and-a on the guitar riff that plays throughout

What's the point of differentiating it as 12 when it's just four bars of 3?

This thread is great.

I mean, its all relative to how you count the beats. I said 12/4 because the way the song is structured, it sounds like each measure has 4 beats, and each beat is split into thirds. If you tried to say it was in 3/4, then each beat in the song "becomes" its own measure. It's like saying a song in 4/4 is really in 16/4. You could write it either way and make it sound the same, but it's probably better to say 4/4. In this case I think 12/4 is more accurate.
Also 12/4 isn't 3/4 or 4/4, it's 12/4. It means something different than the other two

fuck that
get into some coltrane 6/8 shit.
get blown.

That's what you call compound simple meter. The 12 is to imply that the 4 major beats are divided into 3 parts. In practice: 12/8 meter is identical to 4/4 meter, with each beat divided into triplets.

12/4 is used for the same reason 3/8 is used. It's used so musicians, conductors, readers, and players can understand how the beat and rhythm is intended to be played. It's used to illustrate where the accents and melodies line up.
My earlier point was that 12/4 could also easily be 4 measures of 3/4 as opposed to 3 measures of 4/4.

ooh. Bangers indeed friend.

>thinking the bar indicates division
4/4 means 4 beats per measure and and each beat is a quarter note. 3/4 is 3 beats per measure, where each is a quarter note. 12/4 and 12/8 means 4 beats per measure where each beat is split into thirds (4 dotted half notes or 4 dotted quarter notes respectively).
There's no really audible difference between 12/4 and 12/8 just like there's not real difference from how 8/4 and 4/4 sound.

I think you're agreeing with me posting that since 3 is lesser than 4 but maybe not.
>>63846064
6/8 is literally just 3/4 fast
>>63846095
My beef with that is that it's all relative to tempo. The amount of repetitions of the 3/4 measure don't change that it can be viewed that way. If you're writing it down, I'm sure it'd be easier not to break it up that much though.

I'm no music whiz, but the rhythm is going to be in the actual rhythm of the notes and rests more than the meter.

I'm glad you like it. These are my favorite of the more energetic songs on it.

There is entirely an audible difference in 12/8 and 12/4. By your logic, there should be no difference between 3/4 and 3/8. Or for that matter, 3/4 and 6/8 then, since it's just chopping up beats differently.
12/4 and 12/8 may not have a huge difference, but in general, having the same amount of beats doesn't mean anything. How beats, measures, and melodies are split up are very important. For instance, 6/8 is different from 3/8 because it gives a triplet feel because beats the division is 123123 per measure. It's highly dependent on the music and how the composer wanted the music to be heard.
>>63846273
If you have a part in 12/4 and you change it to 12/8, you change nothing about the sound, and the measures are just halved in length.
>>63846353
you use 8 bars for it instead of 4 though
in terms of song structure that is a thing

you are dumb
good luck wth music bb
Please stop pretending to know music theory if you don't. Embarrassing thread.
