If you like Pullock, you should listen to early Animal Collective.
>>
>>63840090
If you like Rothko, you might want to listen to something more experimental.
>>
>>63840090
I like Twombly and Rothko
>>
>>63840116
>pullock
>>
>>63840116

Lachenmann's boring shite.
If you're going to listen to contemporary classical music then pick Rihm and Ferneyhough.
>>
modern music is outdated as fuck, dumbass
rothko still makes plebs bleed
>>
>>63840318
it's kind of stupid that the early 20th century has coopted the word modern, so who cares. everyone knows what you mean and the distinction between modern and contemporary (music at least) isn't dramatic
>>63840330
what did the americlaps do?
>>
>>63840469
>what did the americlaps do?
oh boy you're in for a fun time:

>On 15 September 1945, returned home during the Allied occupation of Austria, Webern was shot and killed by an American Army soldier following the arrest of his son-in-law for black market activities. This incident occurred when, three-quarters of an hour before a curfew was to have gone into effect, he stepped outside the house so as not to disturb his sleeping grandchildren, in order to enjoy a few draws on a cigar given him that evening by his son-in-law. The soldier responsible for his death was U. S. Army cook Pfc. Raymond Norwood Bell of North Carolina, who was overcome by remorse and died of alcoholism in 1955.[64]

>>63840424
what's Rihm's sound like? only listened to a little. and what's his best music?
>>
>>63840469
Shot him
>>
>>63840487
>>63840507

>>
>>63840494
Rihm is very much his own person, alternates between turn of the century neoclassicism a la Bartok to purely classic harmony a la Beethoven and Mozart to Boulez-ian discord

Check out the string quartets, Jagden und Formen, and more recently Et Lux
>>
>>63840469
>what did the americlaps do?
minimalism
>>
imagine being the person who killed the most visionary mind in music up to that point

what a fucking sad draw in life there

eh, I feel like minimalism was ok to the extent it's related to Webern.

That makes me wonder though, was minimalism destined to go pop or did it just converge? Does stuff like Feldman or La Monte Young have a poppier rhythm, structure or harmony to it than other classical?
>>
>>63840598
I think referring to Reich and Glass (well early Glass) and co. as "poppy" is diningenuous since it implies they made their music out of an urge to be popular and appealing, rather than simply making the art they wanted to make.

Really, music as a whole only became poppy starting in the 80's. Kenny G, Ludovico Einaudi, Michael jackson, etc.

Someone killed Stravinsky?

Webern was more a computer programmer than a visionary.

do...do you know who Webern was?
>>
>>63840536
>>63840648
everyone says Webern was a visionary, but it was just a logical progression of 12 tone stuff. he sounds pretty unique, no one sounds like they copied him. Ives and Varese were more directly influential.
>>
>>63840648
Also
>Stravinsky
>most important musical mind since Monteverdi
Name something Stravinsky pioneered.
>>
>>63840687
>but it was just a logical progression of 12 tone stuff.
A logical progression of 12 tone music was serializing all aspects of music, and completely (unlike Schoenberg) removing the paradigm of melody vs harmony?
>>
Dude, La Monte Young, Lou Harrison, Morton Feldman, Terry Riley, the list goes on LMAO.
>>
>>63840598
I mean the Classical era is pretty much pop music, minimalism was just hearkening back to that in terms of harmony, but without the movement towards some kind of goal, it was looking at the foundation of music as the art itself, much like sketch and cubism.
>>
>>63840638
>music as a whole only became poppy starting in the 80's.
u wot m8
What's your definition of poppy??
>>
>>63840765
Specifically appealing to the masses, not forging your own style.
>>
>>63840251
`no`
>>
>>63840722
sure, because 12 tone music was an instance of something becoming more serial. anyway, for many, it did end up progressing that way. but not because of Webern.

>>63840638
>>63840743
that's true, but it seems people mostly disregard it because it's "poppy"
>>
>>63840816
>sure, because 12 tone music was an instance of something becoming more serial.
Then why didn't any of Schoenberg's work have anything near what Webern wrote?
>that's true, but it seems people mostly disregard it because it's "poppy"
We disregard Minimalism because it isn't new. It's the same reason Shostakovich is really meh and Stravinsky.
>>
>>63840257
lmao that infowars guy makes me cringe
>>
>>63840782
But that's been happening forever.
>>
>>63840892
Not to the degree that 80's corporate music culture allowed it though.
>>
>>63840984
I dunno senpai. I don't know if there is a way to quantify the scale of it, it probably did get progressively bigger and bigger in terms of commercialism, but the goal hasn't been much different since the early 20th century. Music has been made for money for centuries, it began being mass marketed whenever it was possible to mass produce and sell it, i.e. the invention of the printing press. Sheet music became gramaphones became radio and vinyl became tapes and tv and cd's and mp3s and internet. Music was molded to fit the restrictions of these mediums, songs became 3 minutes long so they could fit on a gramophone side.
Even before this, folk music was made to please the masses.
It has always been about pleasing people and making money.
>>
>>63841252
I guess it's just the fact that it's so easily spreadable and marketable now though.
