Yeah, of course they were. But rest of the band was overshadowed by Morrison's image. Robby Krieger wrote a lot of their hit songs and, frankly is underrated as a guitarist.

Once you get past Morrison's over the top image you see that the rest of the band members are actually very talented. Good psychedelic music overall. Wouldn't suggest actually doing psychedelics to their music if you spook easy though.
