>Yosuke Yamashita Trio, Dairakudakan & Gerald Oshita - Arashi

How can I be anything but happy with this recording? It takes the ambient theatre I love and staples manic free jazz to it. Yamashita really punches that piano, regardless of how precise his playing gets on some of the tracks (“Great Nihility Conference: Part I-V” for example. Smooth as butter+ while I’m on that track, what a fucking switch to the calm percussive section around the 14 minute mark). “The Future War” was probably the shortest and the most powerful of unseen scenes, with what I assumed to be a 46 second representation of death by atomic bomb (or maybe chemical weapon). I’m making this assumption off the fact that Dairakudakan was a butoh dance ensemble.

I loved the theatrical interludes like “Prelude by Gong and Human Voices” and “Nihility Mobs: Interlude by Footsteps” because of how subtle their inclusion was into the more melodic aspects of the performance. Another favourite moment of mine was the vocal performance on Ghosts II, somewhat impersonating the classic Ayler melody in an insane manner.

Then there were minor moments of folk-inspired melodies on this. A Hairstic and a Liliputian had a percussive and string ensemble, transitioning the colourful consonances into the more Western-inspired titbits of brass sections. These sound like the 40s US tunes, possibly making a face to face comparison between the sunny music and the dying breath.

Overall it is fucking great. I’ll probably look for some sources on the nature of the performance from some Japanese websites when I have time but for now I will have my own conclusions as to the progression of the play. The “playing” here is very solid though. I don’t even mind the absence of the bass because the roaring timbres from the piano and the brass sound much more up-front and alarming.

Loved it. Check this out.

It's free jazz but not in the likes of Masayuki Takayanagi or Kaoru Abe. It's rather a very energetic piano trio with prominent piano and drums (and great duos between these). Matter of fact, the sax doesn't play on some tracks.

Pic related shows some albums I listened to today. I will share my thoughts, not that anyone ever reads this stuff

>Chris Watson - Weather Report
2.5/5 || light 6/10

This was a good field recording album. It kind of presented a little caricature of the earth's nature to me, through the advantage that comes with field recording music. This advantage is that the majority of the sounds we here on a record of field recordings are sounds we have already heard in the real life, so the connotations with thoughts and emotions and whatever have already been developed over the span of the listener's life.
The album presented feelings of arid heat through the buzzing of flies and roar of a lion, then later on contrasted it with the sound of rain that obviously "sounds" a lot colder.

I especially appreciated the sounds of people talking in the first track, alongside cows and cowbells. This kind of thing shows an idea of voyeurism that some people would only assume you could have in cinema, but Weather Report, being part of what is probably the most realist genre of music, allows us to be surrounded amongst a foreign landscape and its people just through sound.

I also appreciated the variance of textures on the album: stuff like the soft wind and rain sounds (Track 1, "Ol-lool-o", 7:45) are put alongside pretty abrasive and loud animal grunts ("Ol-lool-o", 10:07), which works well for me in avoiding becoming just another monotonous half-assed ambient piece.

The last track "Vatnajokull" introduces some more surreal sounds like the "rattling" at 3:10 and the droning ambient sound that lasts until about 7:10. So here, there's contrast again within the album to continue effectively maintaining interest.

>Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy (1968 version)
3.5/5 || strong 7/10

I liked this album for the same reason that I like Frank Zappa's work as a whole; he manages to take avant-garde, experimental concepts, and make them fun and more approachable. With his approach to musique concrete in Lumpy Gravy, he mixes an orchestra with jazz and rock guitar sections, and such a great deal of odd sounds added in that the entire 30 minutes or so seems to reach every possible texture of sound conceivable.

There is also a lot of spoken word, and while it is simultaneously funny and creepy at points, the abundance of it would be my main criticism towards the album. It works best when the instrumentation seems to rhythmically compliment it (Track 1, 5:48) but at points it seems to approach tedium –this is likely due to the more musical aspects of the two tracks being so good, that they become missed when absent.

Comparing Lumpy Gravy with what is probably the most famous example of popular musicians experimenting with musique concrete –The Beatles' "Revolution 9" on their self-titled album – something the Beatles did more successfully than Zappa, in my opinion, was the piece conveying an overall mood (of paranoia, panic, and the scene of a revolution). Lumpy Gravy is certainly skittish, and self-interrupting with different anecdotal sounds and speeches, but the impressive efforts gone into producing it (after all, an entire orchestra was used on the recording) would be even more justified for me if they all went towards presenting a more unified set of themes.

>Panda Bear - Person Pitch

Are you ready to immerse yourself in giant pool of sounds and harmonies? You better be, because this record is the most ethereal thing to ever come out of our favorite collective of animals.

Apparently using almost exclusively two samplers, Panda Bear layers sounds upon sounds upon sounds upon sounds, carefully washing everything with lots of effects, crafting gorgeous sonic masses.
His voice often overlaps itself multiple times, creating Wilson-ish, crystal clear vocal harmonies. Seriously, Noah's voice is the best thing about this record: not only it delivers massive, gentle and nice walls of sounds, but also delivers psychedelic, abstract but also simple and catchy melodies. His unique sound plus his unique style makes for some amazing and unique moments.
The second best thing about this is the production, or better yet, the abuse of effects: echo, reverb, delay, phasers and all that jazz is cranked up to the maximum, but it never sounds annoying since it smooths out the final product and makes all the samples and sounds coexist together in perfect harmony. It also makes this much more dreamy than expected. It sounds like it was taken straight out a good trip where you listen to a concert far away.

Lumpy Gravy is one of the examples of how genius of a composer Zappa was. He was so far ahead of his time as far as his approach to music, he saw everything and anything as an instrument. He's one of the few geniuses of the 20th century imo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9P2V0_p6vE

I think you're looking for "We're Only in it For the Money" an album made pretty much in unison with Lumpy Gravy but seemingly less "filler" and more compositional content. If you enjoy that, try out "Lumpy Money," a posthumous comp of Zappa's original vision for the two albums being mixed together with several different mixes. "Absolutely Free," Zappa's true masterpiece imo, is also a must.

>>63805187
>give me more of that but with arrangements as lush as holiday
You heard Charm of the Highway Strip
>>
>>63807708

[2/2]

The songs' structures are very, very minimal: they are formed by very few movements, and make constant use of repetition, but Panda always spices things up with almost unnoticeable changes in the instrumentations and effects; some climaxes are also mixed in, and they sound pretty fantastic. Also, the amount of diversity helps the enjoyability, since we have parts like the final of "Good Girl/Carrots", which is basically psychedelic reggae, followed by "Search For Delicious", an abstract soundscapes that constantly changes; in "Comfy In Nautica" there are washes of voices, "Bros" uses a lot of shiny guitars and so on and so forth.

Goddamn, this not only is very enjoyable, but also trippy as hell thanks to its peculiar sound: those repetitions and ethereal seas of sounds inside my ears almost made me fall asleep on a bus. I always give bonus points when that happens.

Coolcool. I personally love Best Band You Never..., but I could totally see why some people would dislike it. If you like Zappa's later Mothers stuff, Roxy & Elsewhere should probably be your thing. Really excited to hear your opinion on some of that stuff. Also, just replace Halloween and Zoot Allures with something else, they're not that good. I'd rec replacing them with Joe's Garage (one of his most complete story wise, shows how ahead of the game Zappa was not just on music, but predicting American culture/laws as well), Studio Tan (has his best song, RZNZL) or Jazz From Hell (an important album for music censorship history, plus a decent prog electronic album). I'm assuming you've heard Hot Rats, right? What's your thoughts on it?

>Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho - Paêbirú
Wooooooooow this is awesome. It's so wild and varied : psych folk, trad folk, jazz, raga... The album is divided into 4 sides, each one built around one of the 4 elements. It's hard to describe but it really sounds like each side has its own sound, mainly because they use different sets of instruments.
9/10

>FIS - Duckdive
I'm not familiar with Drum and Bass but I liked what I heard. Makes me wonder why it's has such a low score on rym. It sounded very dark and minimal with a lot of uncanny sounds. Not as frightening as stuff like Andy Stott but close. Track 4 has these cool tribal drums.
8/10

∆3 triangle wins his duel.
Starting round 2 soon.

Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion (1985)
>thrash metal

Serviceable thrash, but nothing special. The parts where the black metal influence becomes really noticeable are the best, but the more strict thrashy bits kinda suffer with their genericness. And the vocals are pretty awful, they're not menacing at all, they sound like my drunk uncle at a family reunion. But its still got a lot of energy and it stays entertaining.

2.5-

Zeni Geva - Desire for Agony (1993)
>noise rock, sludge metal

A /much/ better album stands to be made with THOSE fucking genre tags, dear god. This album gets old incredibly fast, honestly. Zeni Geva can't make any other sound other than slightly more distorted and amped-up sludge metal, there needs to be more variety. Luckily, its a great sound, albeit more underwhelming than it could be, it just gets old /really/ quickly and can't sustain a full record.

2.0

Bisk - Strange or Funny Ha Ha? (1997)
>glitch, IDM, electronic, plunderphonics

This is kinda the shit honestly. Some tracks miss their mark, but overall this is a rock solid IDM album, very reminiscent of an even more spastic Venetian Snares. I love the use of samples, and a lot of times this actually gets really conventionally dancey for IDM, which is nice. Some of the more glitchy moments fall flat, but its still a very good record.

Julien Baker - Sprained Ankle (2015)
>singer/songwriter

This is the /second/ album that fits the oddly specific qualifications of being a singer/songwriter record released in 2015 praised by Nyar by an artist whose name starts with J. And I like it just about as much as the other record. First off, Baker's voice is astounding. Like, some of the best vocals I've ever heard put to record, honestly. They're ethereal, sad, technically very impressive, and god they're just amazing. Sadly the instrumentation brings them down a little bit. The guitar work is nice, but it gets stale very quickly, and the melodies definitely leave a lot to be desired. There's still some great songs ("Sprained Ankle", "Vessels"), but a lot of the tracks here don't stand out all too much. BUT THAT VOICE.

Reporting back in
Been skimming through Paisley Underground stuff because their mix of influences sounded great in theory, but a lot of it is extremely stale. Pic related is actually good though. The album is diverse as fuck and very well structured with lots of great one minute tracks tying it together. Musically it's as if Brian Wilson listened to Anarchy in the UK on repeat for a month straight while in the process of conjuring up Pet Sounds. The lyrics haven't really sunk in yet, but they're just the right amount of vague. It has some dull moments, but overall this is a very solid record. Worth checking out.

My dream team would be Dieter Mobius on synths, Mayo Thompson, Makoto Kawabata and Charles s Bullen (This Heat, Lifetones) all playing guitar (Bullen plays rhythm while the other two fuck around), Oliver Ackerman (place to bury strangers) on bass, and scientist doing production. The album would be long, Kraut-y, post punk/noise rock jams with a lot of weird effects and tons of dub influence.

also Shahid Parvez would guest and play sitar on a track, and Ras Michael would do some hand drumming and sing on another.

>Matt Elliott - The Calm Before
It was... nice. Uninteresting and same-y melodies got tiresome. Same-y guitar got tiresome. Same-y bass got tiresome. Vocals were cool, not the vocal melodies though. The vocal melodies were pretty cookie cutter. Too much bass in the mix. Drums showed up a bit and tempos changed a bit and that was cool but other than that it was... eh. Too much doing nothing and going nowhere to make up for the very few moments it did something and went somewhere.

>Mindflayer - Take Off Your Skin
Well that was loud. I guess that counts for something. Great fun, but 0% "Good", if that makes sense. Actually it was really bad. It was heinously bad. But it works. It works in a Plutonean Herd kind of way. 3/10.

Also starting new thang! For random/assorted albums found during the month that rate 7+ out of 10.

>Daniel Lentz - On the Leopard Altar
>Post-Minimalism, Ambient
Interesting music that dances with vocal hoots and rumbling comfy synths. At times it recalls Einstein on the Beach, without being an infinite brick wall of length and repetition. At other times it explores more ambient music, moving near to Brian Eno's ambient series. Through the album, music bounces back and forth and in between the two.

It's a pretty successful combination. Cool stuff. Thumbs up & such.

To be clear, I don't hate noise in music. It's just that the noise elements on Take Off Your Skin were atrocious. The musical elements were nothing to speak of, so all it really has to rely on is the tone and energy of what's going on.

When the tone can best be described as "Laser vuvuzelas", I'm not sure where to go from there.

I'll see if I can track down that solo album though. Percussion releases can be pretty interesting.

That hardly even qualifies as a dad joke, much less irony.

Why has the Internet lost its fucking mind when it comes to classifying humor? Every single kidding remark is made out to be "8th wave post-pre-ironic-core" when it's just like a picture your grandma would forward to you in 2005.

Idk, maybe I'm alone on this one, but it seems what so many people classify as "post-ironic" isn't even ironic in the first place. Seems like people are just fucking stupid.

Has anyone done the hard work to sift through the different "Weird Japan" lists on rym? Anyone found any of them particularly useful?

Thanks heaps. Just flicking through this now and there's some cool looking stuff in here. Any artists you'd recommend? I've been really big on Ichiko Aoba for a while now. If you haven't heard of her, you should check out this live version of one of her songs, it's really something else.

Have you listened to Seiko Oomori's first album? It's great weird folk. Sadly her following output is disappointing.
I also recommend Mibu Furukawa - 業晒し

No I haven't, thanks for the recs! The Mibu Furukawa one looks really interesting, I'm downloading it now.

Grim's Folk Music is not doing much for me. Vital, on the other hand, was much more interesting.

I can't stop listening to this song. It's got a classic doo-wop rhythm but doesn't sound dated. How weird is that?

The final bit.

>The Trees Community - The Christ Tree
Some of this was a little too church-y for me, the vocal harmonies were just a little too glory hallelujah, y'know what I mean? Anyway, the instrumental bits were actually really really good, plenty of nice harps and percussion and some occasional odd instruments, like bagpipes and even a sitar. So yeah, it's nice psychedelic folk and it probably would be even nicer if they let the religious elements home (sorry givingbear!). 3.0

>Raymond Scott - Manhattan Research Inc.
I find it kinda hard to talk about it because it's two hours of a lot of shit going on. Weird early electronic music and a ton of found sounds, generally belonging to some advertisement jingle. There are no real highlights on here, the songs are mostly very short and over before you know it, but it's consistently entertaining and unique so it definitely gets a pass. The name of the game is lightworks! 3.0+

>Azuma Kabuki Musicians - Nagauta Music
Nagauta music is meant to accompany kabuki theater, so of course on record it's probably a different experience than live, but it's still very good on record. Shamisen plays a vital role here, accompanied by a number of percussion instruments and melodic female vocals, as well as the occasional rousing chants of male vocalists. It's cool, and a must-have for those who are interested in japanese folk music. 3.5

>Tonetta - 777
Decent meme. Tony's pervy vocals singing about dicks and whatnot are pretty entertaining for a while, although the gimmick gets old rather fast. Instrumentally it's nothing worth writing home about, just a bunch of lo-fi guitars generally. Tonetta has a Youtube channel and apparently the music makes more sense when accompanied by the visual aspect, so I guess that's why this album doesn't do too much for me. Nonetheless, there are some fun tracks, "DRUGS DRUGS DRUGS" in particular is memorable. The album's a mix of kinda fun and somewhat uninteresting, I suppose. 2.5-

>Cтyк бaмбyкa в XI чacoв - Лёгкoe дeлo хoлoд
I originally put some futurism compilation in this slot, but when I downloaded it, it turned out the artist tags were put in the song tags and I'm absolutely not going to manually tag over 70 songs. Also, it's 2 hours long anyway and I wanted to finish this, so here we are. This record right here is good. It's spooky Russian lo-fi music influenced by industrial shit, so basically your average underground Russian record, except not really because it's actually good. 3.0+

EVALUATING THE TASTES:

>Torts
Torts has some musical fetishes that I am not too partial of, but then he also loves some records that I am 100% on board with. A lot of the stuff he likes seems to be pretty happy and uplifting, and music of that kind of mood is hit-and-miss for me, with some of that stuff being amazingly energetic and gorgeous (Jorge Ben, Ali Hassan Kuban), while others feel somewhat uneventful to me (Bobby McFerrin, Sweet Talks). In any case, a lot of this stuff is (or at least attempts to be) harmonic, pretty, and uplifting, and it resulted in some absolute highlights. I also have no idea why he likes that John Cale album, it's lost on me and doesn't fit in with any of these records at all. Nice taste though, keep it up!

>natkingcole
To me, nat's taste is consistently good. That is a plus on one hand, since I was usually nearly sure that I would at least enjoy the records in his section, but on the other hand, I never was truly blown away by anything (although Salmon Run got pretty close when Lambkin left his voice home). Also, Lift to Experience is reasonably boring. These records did confirm to me though that memphis rap is best rap, so props.

>Good Friend Rodriguez
As interesting as it is hit-and-miss, GFR's favourite records will surely surprise you every time in some way, whether that be a positive or a negative thing is up to you to decide. Indeed, Rod has an ear for the unorthodox, clever sound experiments, and general music on the fringe. There's minimal power electronics, electroacoustic modern classical, sound collage noisecore, and surf rock breakcore, and only some of it is actually good, but all of it is intriguing.

>Talking Cat Bob
TCB's taste is well-known for being centered around industrial, post-punk, and industrial post-punk, although of course there's more to it. Nonetheless, one thing almost all of these records have in common is that they sound like they were made by fringe artists experimenting with something cool in their basement, whether that be noisy guitars, found sounds, or electronics. Some of these records fall under the category "obscure for a reason" (as in, there's little to see here, just some fuck who wants to be NWW), but there certainly are hidden gems to be found, like Jon Rose's theatrical mix of voice acting, violin improv, and sound collage, or The Gordons' violent noise rock.

>Misha
This faggot stole my fucking taste!! Fuck!!

:^)

Some additional statistics, favourite albums etc can be found on the bottom of the chart.

I did this shit in a little over a month! That's pretty impressive imo, considering the size of this thing and the fact that I have a ton of charts still running. I did maybe neglect my studies a little bit but ehhh. Well. Time to s/t I suppose.

Shibuya-kei is more popular than traditional folk from literally anywhere, so you could just go on a spree of that for a year or two.

>>63807708
>Are you ready to immerse yourself in giant pool of sounds and harmonies?
The flying fuck are you even trying to say?
>You better be, because this record is the most ethereal thing to ever come out of our favorite collective of animals.
For god's sake.

>>63826405
Pretty sure certain forms of American folk music are more popular than shibuya-kei, at least in Europe and North America.

>>63826497
he means on /mu/, and in the strictest sense of "folk" music.
