>>
I went to one of his shows in St. Louis not long ago. Worst concert experience of my entire life and the promoter was actually apologizing to the crowd and offering them refunds.

As to what it was like? Well, all I can say is that I feel very bad for Chuck and that his family is exploiting him bigtime for money and they should all be investigated for elder abuse. The end.
>>
>>63744419
i'd probably kill myself if i was such a great musician and then forgot how to play the guitar
>>
>>63744605
The poor bastard can barely even see or hear anymore and he has rather nasty arthritis in his hands. He probably hasn't forgotten how to play (how could you forget songs you've played literally thousands of times), it's just that he can't see or hear what he's doing or be able to play chords properly with his arthritic digits.

Les Paul was playing much better at 80+ than Chuck. BB King was too. Ravi Shenkar at 92 was playing considerably better than this on his final tour. Some guys can keep going at an advanced age, Chuck unfortunately isn't one of them.
>>
I saw Chuck Berry at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
>>
>>63746196
Who was the person in the original copypasta?
>>
>>63746193
Well, I wouldn't say that Les Paul was playing that great at 90. He did have arthritis and hearing issues so he had to simplify his playing style and play at slower tempos. For one thing, he was only using three fingers at the end.
>>
>>63746289
Ryan Gosling I think

Lousy fan fic, he's got arthritis he can't carry that many candies!
>>
>>63746335
Maybe not but LP at least was still mostly functional and still working on projects in his final years (notably a hearing aid). Chuck Berry seems as if he barely even knows where he is.

Aw, poor guy. He was sad that his friends had all died even much younger ones (when you're 94, people 20 years younger than you are still over 70). I'd never want to live to my 90s.

As self-pitying as Les sounded in that article, the truth is his life at 94 was much better than most people at that age.

>still get out and play weekly gigs (albeit with some physical limitations)
>still lived in his own home
>had an apparently very loving and supportive son
>generations worth of /mu/tants who idolized him
>still completely had all his mental faculties and was working on various projects to the end

I wouldn't want to be 94, but if you have to live that long, you could be doing a lot worse than him (and at that age, a lot worse _really_ means a lot worse).
>>
>>63747031
Well put.
>>
>>63746193
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtvdgETe4Yc

BB King is not too bad in this gig from '13. He's obviously not what he was in 1966, but he still gets the groove and tone down pretty nicely and manages to play something that actually sounds like music instead of a 4 year old banging on a guitar.

Of course BB also sat down while playing in his later years as did Les Paul which Chuck apparently does not.
>>
>>63744419
lmao the guitarist in the background in the beginning shaking his head like "thats not the song were doing" and then giving up
He looks pretty bad and sounds even worse. All the musicians have this really serious look on their face
>>
>>63747432
I don't know if that's a fair comparison though because aside from BB playing while seated, his music was really slow compared to Chuck's. The poor guy and his crippled 89 year old hands can't handle Johnny B. Goode anymore (which is like 169 bpm while BB King's songs are probably all <100 bpm).
>>
>>63744419
That clip is from almost 6 years ago. He's gotten considerably worse. If you'd pull up footage from the past 3 or so years, it's quite horrible to watch.

This claims he hasn't performed at all since '14. Maybe he just physically can't do it anymore although I never actually heard any announcement that he retired from touring.

>>
>>63747692
Pretty good, not cringe at all!
>>
>>63747879
I told you, his hearing and eyesight are very weak now. By his own admission, he misinterprets the pitch of notes and thinks a B is a C and whatnot (though Les Paul had this issue as well).
>>
>>63744419
i think i might take up smoking just to be sure i never get this old
>>
>>63748033
Lemmy sure took that route. He told Ozzy Osborne allegedly "What's the point of living to 99 if you can't have any fun along the way?"
>>
>>63744419

I bet he still earn mad cash every year in royalties only, without having to do anything. He's old as fuck, why didn't he retire?
>>
"When placed on trial for corrupting the youth of Athens by encouraging them to disbelieve in the gods, Socrates made no attempt to defend himself and quite willingly accepted the court order to commit suicide by drinking hemlock. Xenophon claims that the philosopher, then about 70, wanted to die because 'he did not look forward to advancing any further into old age' Although Xenophon also says that 'Socrates was still vigorous and could have been active for another decade yet', it's not out of the question that he may have been in failing health and so sought his own end."
>>
>>63748224
>implying he plays music for the money
>>
>>63748224
According to the setlist.fm link, Chuck has rarely performed more than a handful of shows a year since the mid-70s and the vast majority of his touring was done in the 50s-60s.

But hey, why not? By the 70s he was probably well-set financially and never needed to perform live except when he felt like it.
>>

Let us all please remember Chuck as he was, not as he is.

Probably because he enjoys what he does and if he stops he'll die

That happens when you get to a certain age, you sit down too long and you never get up again
