Is anyone here a fan of DJ Screw's chopped and screwed music? I have been a fan for years and I decided that with both my experience with the genre and my love of it that I should try my own hand with it. Can someone with knowledge of the niche tell me if my shit's hot or not? I think it's hot but that may be cause it's my shit.

you're slowing them down so much they don't sound good, and there's no chops or blending to speak of. Try harder
>>
>>63701039
damn, okay
Yeah, the lack of blending is something that i'm yet to tackle, and I've been doing chops sparingly due to my inexperience with actually doing this.
You think it's too slow? is it the pitch or the speed that I should change?
>>
>>63701094
I don't know, you'd want to make sure you slow them down instead of just timestretching or pitch shifting them, but your mixes sound distorted. They seem like they've lost their sense of groove. Maybe try eqing them afterwards to re-emphasize the bass.

They sound really blown out and sluggish, and as for chopping just learn a bit about rhythm syncopation and learn that all you're chops are doing is extending and experimenting with the beats syncopation.

Thanks, you do have a good point there, I haven't been actually slowing them down and I feel like that's a problem if I wish to actually emulate the original chopped and screwed style. I did EQ them a bit to emphasize the bass, but maybe I should do that more.
>>
>>63700961
all you did was slow them down didn't add any chops which is the key to C&S.

Screw's ability as an actual DJ is part of what makes him the undisputed King of chopped and screwed. He was able to blend and mix pretty seamlessly and hold and develop a groove over the course of a mix really well.

Try to pay attention and to listen to some of the songs in his mixes at their original normal speed so you can fully grasp just what he was doing with mixing, layering sounds, transitioning and blending. Then try to adapt that to your workflow, I' am assuming you arent using a mixer and Technic 1200s, so try to layer and blend sounds in your DAW like a DJ Mix does.

Also the chops are really important to transforming a slowed down song into a whole nother listening experience. Understanding the preexisting rhythm and groove of the song is important to creating another rhythmic layer via chops
>>
>>63701267
perhaps this is a bad example, but i look to this song when i think that i should chop a song more

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o-SL4EkTc4

i figured that while i'm getting the hang of chopping it wouldn't hurt to have a few songs like the originator himself did here

he chopped this song little if at all
>>
>>63701312
It is interesting to compare the normal songs to his mixes, and thanks for being understanding to how I'm trying to learn the ropes with the various techniques that can be seen in screw's mixes.
>>
>>63701325
this a good example of good chops.
its not DJ Screw but OG Ron C who was in Swishahouse when Screw was alive

Well Screw is actually a really good DJ, By having a firm grasp of the songs in their original form it is easier to truly appreciate how he added to or changed, "screwed" if you will hahah, the existing structure of the source material in a way that created a whole new listening experience within one of his mixes. That is one of the fundamentals to C&S, Yea in the most basic language C&S is slowing down a song, but its more about creating a new original listening experience.

Honestly alot of that h-town rap kinda blows in its normal state, but Screw found a way to transform it into something else and make it amazing.

Try to figure out just exactly how he mixes, blends, and the type of songs he uses. Then create your own personal vision of C&S, C&S and re-edit songs that you really love regardless that aren't necessarily classical C&S h-town rap source material, but still maintains that Swangin' and Bangin" groove.

It's all a learning process Y'know, Once you learn the techniques, Don't feel obligated to use all H-Town Rap, screwheads have been listening Big Moe edits for almost 20 years and have heard enough of them. Like my personal favorite screw song isn't technically classical screw and is an RnB song screwed (Mtunes Sugar Free)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bac5hfnImM

Just try not to look at it as C&Sing rap songs but just music in general. You can learn alot from Studying Screw. Like i mix and dj pretty much only Techno and House but have learned alot from him and how he devolps grooves, layers, etc
>>
really diggin this thread you hardly see a thread on DJ Screw / SUC or the C&S culture.
>>
>>63701630
man i really appreciate you taking the time to explain some of this stuff for me. i didn't focus on h-town rap cus i felt obligated, i'm just in love with houston rap as a whole and want to hear how some of my favorite songs sound when done like this, one example being when I slowed down a bushwick bill song. I suppose I derived too much inspiration from a particular super-slow song, this one; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_uNhxqahfY

also this song bangs so hard too for a non H-Town rap screw song.

nice
>>
>>63701757
O shit yea this shit bangs dude, I fuck with it heavy.

Also try not to slow things down too much as it kinda muddys things.
I feel like the tempo in this one isn't far off from the screwed version.

Also, I think it would be really cool to experiment with the audio qualities of cassettes, Since most of this shit was just released on cassette. I feel like that would add a nice and pleasant amount of grit and distortion, and give things an overall warmer sound. The teack you initially posted doesnt have the warmness i associate with Screw's sound.

Maybe try to record the source Material on cassette, than process it and slow it down from their. Or process the track then record it to tape and then bring it back into the computer for further editing. Experiment with things.
I feel like another cool idea would be to record stuff onto cassette, then make Tape Loops out of the cassettes (Its really easy to do look it up online). Then use these tape loops to layer over your screwed beat.
This could help you transition and bridge from one song to the next and add a new dimension to the work. The Tape Loop's length wouldn't really be in time with the beat, but i feel like this could add a different, almost human, rhythmic sensibility to the work. And help it not fall into generic C&S territory and become a whole new listening experience.

What are you using to make this?
>>
>>63701832
Hell Yeah dude, I love the don't stop the music edit.

So does anyone else think this would sound hot C&S'd. It would be tight to drive slow too

>>63701926
i'm using fl studio, and you have a really good point as far as adding warmth to these songs. i could do that easily and it would help the overall quality tremendously i think. If i had the facilities to record these tracks to a cassette that'd be a nice direction to take it in. Yeah, i'm trying to stay out of generic chopped and screwed territory, I'm liking the idea of making my own way.
>>
>>63701951
yeah it would sound good,
maybe try to blend it, chop it, screw it, layer it to sound like this?

listening to this might help a bit perhaps

it's basically jason lescalleet's reinterpretation of various screw mixes that borders on a study

HAHAHA Hell YEah Nigga,
I LOVE SADE

I've been toying with the idea of a tape of screwed r&b that is like kind of a tribute to SADE and the singer Tinashe, They are both 12/10s in looks and music

Yo check out this video she is so fucking hot and i wanna screw her and this song so bad, for some reason i think this and SADE would be tight

(p.s. GODH DAMN look how fine this beautiful Woman is, the ONLY waifu as far as I'm concerned)

>>63702135
yeah man here's a good screwed up Sade tape for all your waifu needs

>>
>>63702015
well actually recording to cassette is really easy and you can find a cassette player that records for dirt cheap. Like under $20 and you can record over whatever tapes you find. I think actually recording it to tape would give it a certain raw characteristic and warmth that would be a lot harder and more time-consuming than recording onto a cassette then re-recording through your interface.

pic related one of the cassette recorders/players i use.

Tinashe is a goddess.

>>63700961
The general sound is a lot closer to Screw than a lot of C&S I hear, which is nice.

Lately I've been really digging this tape, for the same reason
