your thinking of Close to the Edge another god tier prog album
Yes is a GOAT band, I was really saddened when Chris Squire, I will probably cry when Bill Bruford or Jon Anderson passes, also steve Howe.
>>63699681
Hey O.P. which do you prefer Fragile or Close to The Edge, Ill assume your vote is fragile.
Mine would probably have to be close to the edge. And You And I has been on of my favorite songs for almost 10 years, still get shivers from it
beauty from these two fine musicians whom branched off the great mahavishnu orchestra
>>63700183
>all this babby's first sympoproge
disappointment
>>63700241
Like legit do you guys listen to any proge other than this basic stuff
Do you even bother to check out any other albums
>>63700180
this is an amazingly diverse album rather unknown to many. so chill. my pic is also a gem
>>63700254
Dumping even more 10/10 proge albums

>>63700254
Am I the only one who finds RIO incredibly boring?
I tried listening to both of those albums but they ended up making me sleep.
>>63700310
That mean's you're a filthy plebeian
No seriously how the fuck do you fall asleep to In Praise of Learning

Best magma album
>>63700301
One of my favorites too,
hahah i really love the song Let's Eat (Real Soon)
they are criminaly underrated among the other Canterbury bands
>>63700322
Dunno, just didn't enjoy it. I did like war though
A FLOOWER?!
What are some GOAT live Prog albums?
>>63700153
I don't feel like arguing semantics but this isn't really considered classic "Prog"
even though it sounds kinda similar, the germans had their own thing going

>>63700354

Wurdah > Mekanik
Both are 10/10 though
>>63700363
Yeah, Hatfield are really impressive
>>63700370
Give it a relisten, War is a GOAT song though
>>63700190
You can't ask me that, that's apples to oranges
Just got this one recently. Fun as hell.
>>63700452
I guess I can understand their both 2 different albums, both nearly flawless in my eyes.
I just am too in love with Close To the Edg, I do really love fragile though.
The pinnacle of progressive metal
Someone remind me what GOAT is
>>63700537
Yea, but I feel Scenes from a Memory is slightly better.

Nice

Dream Theater only have two good albums, and that's Metropolis and Images
Has anyone in this thread listened to this album, Olias of Sunhillow?
It is the first solo album of Jon Anderson of Yes.
He played every instrumens on the album, and played each instrument very well, I was definitely impressed. Before listening to this album I thought Jon was mostly a singer and wasn't aware how good of a well-rounded musician he is
After listening to it I was able to pick out the bits and written by Jon Anderson in alot of Yes songs, which was really rewarding considering how big of a Yes fan I'm and how much i love Jon vocals.
even though its a kind of a tired trope when talking about music, It was kinda ahead of it's time.
here is a listen link for anyone who hasn't heard it or is interested! PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS AWESOME ALBUM! You won't regret it

IDK i can see where your coming from they definitely have some similarities, but i guess i associate Amon Duul with the more tripped out strains of Psych Rock.
I guess i don't typically consider Amon Duul classic Prog because They don't really have that completely Un relatable Fantasy Medievel England escapism as the classic English Prog, they weren't Musicians who were obviously trained in Classic music and brought that style into rock like the Big English Prog Bands, and their playing style was more feelbased than having the rigid classical structure with multipart suites, reprisals, and all that.
This isn't 10/10, but it is worth listening to.
late for / co l d s o u p/
Don't listen to as much RIO as I used to but this is a good album.
>>63700902
Heresie > Ceux > 1313
All are fantastic though>>63700902
>>63700687
Dude chill out, I'm just trying to discuss music I like and that i think other people would like. Yes has been one of my favorite bands for 10+ years, and was a really important band to my musical journey. I'm not gonna turn my back on a band that is that important to me and has stood the test of time to me, they have been one of my constants, and I'am interested in discussing them, and discussing an album that i feel like is overshadowed by the full bands material.
I feel no need to get into a musical dick measuring contest over the internet, It's not gonna affect my life in the slightest of change my outlook towards such a fundamental band to me. Finding the most obscure challenging RIO album and posting it on /mu/ isn't gonna make your actual life any better. Constantly trying to one up people on 4chan isn't gonna get you laid or make you an enjoyable person to interract with, youll just be continue to be trapped in a cycle of cynicism and hatefulness - and over what albums other people like that are not deep enough 4 u
>>63700139
I get up to turn this shitty fucking album off
>>63700378
>>63700986
>taking a proge shitposter seriously
But my point is that /mu/ really needs to discuss proge that isn't angloproge or symphoproge
>>63699733
>>63699715
Correct
>>63701086
>oh yeah i listen to hte proge, king crimson pink floyd the list goes on
>>63700986
On our left, we see from the bowels of taste shaming and shit-tier meming a glimmer of humanity, neigh, a whole person!
What's qualifications for prog rock?
Anywho, here's this band ive been trying to bring up on here for awhile. They are heavy floyd inspired. I would voutch that every album except deliver this creature is good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMM5oxXnmo8&list=PL9lwNJ9DbcxTaj_e4L0POBdULfnmoeY73
>>63701018
what is the distinction between the two?
>>63701294
Angloproge refers to the original proge scene, KC, Yes, Genesis, Jethro etc
Symphoproge refers proge that has symphonic elements
>>63701377
>symphonic
is that not classical? I guess a symphony can play something besides classical music
Also it appears i lived a life never acknowledging Genesis as proge rock. Is that pre-Phill Collins?
Also what would be proge rock you would like to discuss out of those categories.
>>63701018
Yea, I can see that.
The AngloProg and Symphonic Prog bands definitely get more public attention than any of the other bands in Europe doing similar things. I guess because alot of them were the most commercially successful and a good number of English bands were the earliest ProgRockers. Plus the whole pastoral and escapist vibe of Prog feels specifically English
I actually really enjoy more out their RIO, Zeuhl, and the other mainland Europe bands. But the general populace of /mu/ doesn't know alot of the non Anglo and Symphonic bands, So its not always a fruitful point of discussion. I just think the way you worded your comment doesn't really promote any further discussion or motivate people to check out said music
Fragile isn't all that great as a whole album.
Sure, it's got a couple of really great songs, but a lot of the album feels like fluffy garbage
>>63700190
I wish Yes just didn't exist anymore. There's no original members in the band and Steve Howe can barely play at this point.
>>63701459
Fragile basically a few whole songs and the rest filler songs that only last 1-2 minutes.
>>63701431
No no, we're talking proge rock that has symphonic elements. Like early Yes for example.
Yup, Selling England and Foxtrot are both considered proge
While my favorite angloproge band is KC they've pretty much been discussed to death.
I want to talk about Zeuhl, RIO and Canterbury Scene. Maybe some kraute too.
>>63701446
Zeuhl > RIO > Canterbury > Anglo
honestly
But yeah I wish /mu/ would dig deeper into proge
How is this not here yet?
>>63701511
because everybody else has shit taste, congrats for having good taste
>>63701511
Best KC album honestly
Red > Court > Larks > Discipline
>>63701531
Fuck you too buddy
>>63701553
Never liked discipline, too I dunno, 80s I guess.
>>63701498
Where can i learn more about genres without pestering you and opening myself up to ridicule?
I'm also one of the many that just talk about floyd and KC (red and court), maybe yes but i have only listened to fragile.
Do you have a band for these genres? (Zeuhl, RIO, Canterbury, etc)
>>63701622
I'm curious as well. I feel like most of the time I've asked people for "prog" I get people telling me to listen to the millionth cheesy power metal prog album released this month or like fucking Coheed and Cambria or something
>>63701617
If you think Discipline was bad I don't want to see your reaction to Beat or Perfect Pair. Now those are waaaay too 80s.
>>63701622
>>63701656
Listen to more KC. Try out the rest of the Wetton trilogy (Larks, SaBB and Red) and maybe the New Wave trilogy (Discipline, Beat, ToaPP). Listen to Close to the Edge, Topographic and Relayer all by Yes. Then listen to some entry level Canterbury scene. Soft Machine (specifically Third), Gong (Radio Gnome trilogy: Flying Teapot, Angels Egg, You), Caravan (If I Could Do It All Over Again, In the Land of Pink and Grey) and finally Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt. Then you're ready for Rock in Opposition and Zeuhl. Try
Henry Cow - Leg End, Unrest, In Praise of Learning
Univers Zero - Heresie, Ceux du Dehors, 1313
Samla Mammas Mama - Maltid
Etron fou leloublan - Batelages
Stormy Six - L'apprendista
And for Zeuhl try
Magma - Just do their whole discog. They're the original zeuhl group
Shub-Niggurath - Les morts
Guapo - Five Suns, Black Oni
Koenjihyakkei - Viva Koenji
Bondage Fruit - s/t
Weidorje - s/t
Eskaton - 4 Visions, Ardeur
And you're officially an avant-teen just like me
>>63701498
Yea i really love the Canterbury bands, more so then the "Classic" Proggies. A lot of them are criminally underrated within "prog." I really love the more laidback pastoral energy of the music and how it balances headier Jazz-Fusion elements that the Canterbury dudes fucked with, without having the pretension and completely un relatable fantasy aestheric of classic prog. It is also really hard for me to not pick up elements of ShoeGaze in the Canterbury bands sound too.
I guess i just have a soft spot in my heart for the "Classic" anglo and symponic bands because they were my introduction to non radio music and was really important to my musical foundation. But, with that being said ive listened to Yes, ELP, KC, and Genesis a million times
I honestly haven't listened to Zeuhl except for Magma, whom i love. I like some of the RIO, but i find a lot of it overwhelmingly pretentious, and can only take the bands i like in small controlled doses.
What is your opinion on Van Der Graff Generator? I feel like they are a good balance between Anglo Prog and the more challenging experimental prog
Thanks. I'm familiar with a lot of King Crimson and Yes and I enjoyed Heresie but I need to revisit it. Appreciate the recommendations.
Would you rather be on horseback, /prog/?
>>63701748
Canterbury is utterly wild and fun. The psych rock aesthetic coupled with the complexity of fusion and proge is utterly genius.
But yeah Angloproge and symphoproges still do deserve some respect on their own. I'm not denying that they're good, I'm just saying that there's more proge out there that /mu/ should discuss.
Magma are basically the most essential zool band. You should also try out some others though, take a look at my post above for other essentials in the genre
RIO is pretty pretentious I will agree. But I still enjoy it a lot, a lot of times it's more fun than it is up its ass.
I actually have not taken the time to listen to Van der Graaf. I ought to listen to Pawn Hearts sometime soon
>>63701749
np famalamo
>>63701756
Mike "Dude I made my career off ripping off Magma lmao" Oldfield
>>63701796
Ya i totally understand that, but at the same time most of /mu/ is content discussing Kanye, KPop, Sufjan Stevens, and whatever fucking meme rapper is hot this week, so having legitimate music discussion is hard
Oh word cool, I'll defiantly check out some of those Zheul bands. I really like Magma so i think i wont be disappointed.
Van der Graff is really really good, i feel that if your posts are any indication you would enjoy them. Listen to Pawn Hearts it is the Shit. I love the song plague of lighthouse keepers.
>>63702077
Yeah neo-/mu/ is pretty garbage. It's sad honestly
Be warned, a lot of those bands don't exactly sound like Magma. They take influence from Magma but they create their own sound from it.
All right, I'll try them out
The Aristocrats are fooking amazing, yo
>>63701796
I love Mike Oldfield and didn't know Magma : what's a good album to start?
>>63702696
And it's the wrong image. Great. I meant their self titled and Culture Clash
>>63702709
Start from the beginning desu senpai
>>63702728
will do
>>63700241
Dude ur crazy, Magma AND Henry Cow???? Now THATS obscure taste!!!!!1
>>63702709
If you didn't know that was a reference to Vander claiming that Tubular Bells was based around a melody Oldfield stole from Magma
Start with their most famous, Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh
>>63703097
>implying I ever acted so
My issue is that /mu/ doesn't even acknowledge entry level stuff like Magma and Henry Cow
>>63700304
Nice one anon, i thought i was the only one on here who loved that
>>63704058
Haha. Both of these were posted by me.

Nice we share the same taste then. Were you recc'd broselmaschine in a thread/post about comus? If so, then it was me.
If youre into medieval shit, check out Unicorn Ensemble - on the way to betlehem, not prog or anything, but good shit nonetheless
>>63704194
I don't remember how I discovered it; it was some time early last year.
Thanks for the rec, I'll give it a listen tomorrow probably.
>>63704194
another anon here but, I was in that "today I will listen to" comic thread and saw the one on Gryphon, one download later and I'm knee deep in prog rock
