>dg
He just flails around and can't keep tempo. Look at early live videos. He's a fucking lumberjack. Hitting hard and fast doesn't make you a good drummer.

>>63700551
Do you want the easy answer or the hard answer?
What style of music do you want to play? What goals do you have?
>>63702309
Zach Hill is awful live for DG.
But he's been fucking GOAT for so many other bands live. I'm sure Andy and Stefan must secretly get pissed at him for going off time in the middle of sets but don't dare say shit to him.
Race For The Prize has one of the best drums I've ever heard
>>63699057

Baa bababa bababaa
Bababa bababaa
Babababaa
>>63702309
This is exactly why I don't revere him as a be all end all drummer of some sort. He's great and all but he basically displays the same style in just about every project he's involved in.
>>63702793
Post-rock. To start a band and make music!
>>63696382
I'm surprised I didn't post this.
>>63696288
Any album with Hal Blaine on.
>>63702901
Then other than timing and technique yr gonna have to practice dynamics shitloads.
Get stick control and practice the exercises at every tempo at every dynamic (barely audible, to load as fuck) for minutes on end, and practice crescendos, since thats really fucking important for post rock.
Take beats from your favourite bands and learn them. Watch loads of videos on youtube of them playing, it shouldn't take long for you to be able to transfer what you hear to the kit, assuming it's within your technical range.
Also, don't ask questions like this on 4chan, ask on drummerworld or go to your local drum shop. I live in a small town in the north of England but it has a huge fucking warehouse for a drum shop that has some of the best drummers in the world come round for clinics there, if you live in a big city in America I'm sure you have access to bigger and better facilities than I do, it's free to visit a drum shop and have a chat. Just don't expect a lesson, maybe buy something small like spare beaters or cymbal felts.
>>63703089
Screencapped thank you
>>63703111
Nice trips.
And seriously, practicing the drums if you want to get really good can be fucking tedious at times.
I wasted most of my teenage years playing shitty punk rock songs because I was too lazy and uninterested to practice the boring but important shit like timing/control/dynamics and independence.
My footwork improved but everything else is poop. Don't make the mistake I did. Allow yourself 20 minutes or something a day to play the stuff yo think is fun AFTER you've practiced the boring stuff.
Also d/l a shitload of books. Theres a list of 25 timeless books by modern drummer. Google it, they're mostly what you'll need. Record your playing too, make sure your technique is good early, possibly book ONE lesson to get that sorted or you'll end up struggling a few years down the line.
>>63699094
It's a great album, but the drums in any Muse album are consistently underwhelming
>>63703304
So far I'm just following an old video series from this guy https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rJD-L-tyvyE that I found on piratebay. Seems legit so far. I'll get into the theory side of things soon, atm I'm just having fun. Thanks for the advice!
the fuck guys do i have to do everything myself
>>63703451
pls don't say you're using trad grip
>>63703540
Match grip. Traditional looks fuckin weird
>>63703304
nah fuck this shit
play what you feel like playing, feel is much more important than technique, unless you're shit
Step up your game, boys
>>63703604
>How to not become a technically competent drummer able to express their ideas perfectly
Hate to break it to you but playing like that most of the time gets you fucking nowhere, not everyone is a Zach Hill or a Dave Grohl who got there by fucking about on a kit.
I've played what I felt like playing before, guess where I got? Fucking nowhere. You develop bad habits and end up playing the same shit that you know, because it's easier for you. You need to challenge yourself with new shit from new books every day, no matter how boring or difficult.
Feel comes with technique too btw, you think Bernard Purdie got so good just by fucking about? His groove comes through dedicated practice of technique.
No one's posted Blake Richardson? For shame, /mu.
>>63703564
>>63703883
Blake Richardson is one of my favorite drummers.
>>63704126
I know, right? Not just technical skill but he comes up with original stuff too.
>>63704174
Definitely. The fact that he was only 22 when they made Colors still blows me away.
>>63702309
Idk I feel like just pure aggression and energy and anger are kinda the point with his live sets. He's playing over himself and the studio stuff is insane. I just think that him going off tempo live every once in a while is kind of great because he's just moving so fast and so hard for so long during the live sets that it's a wonder he isn't dead at the end
>>63703883
Jesus I listened to colors and my god that was just so bland and meticulous and boring. Maybe I'm listening wrong. But gawd that was awful
>>63702286
Nicely played Anon. Stella Mozgawa is a great frickin' drummer.
>>63704191
>>63705068
Colors is good, but it's not their best - it's their most *significant* because it was the first to make them stand out from regular death/prog metal. Both the Parallax albums and The Great Misdirect are much better.
>>63700015
Agreed
