Carrie and Lowell is his least impressive mainstream album. He scaled back, it was beautiful, but as a musician it took way less talent. He didn't even produce the album. As for the way it makes me feel, I get a sense of beauty and wonder from it but nothing compares to how The Age of Adz, Michigan, and Illinois makes me feel.

Illinois and Michigan were 12+ instrument albums and he played nearly all of them. Understand Illinois is a solo album. Think of the scale, the large sound, the amount that's going on. You're telling me a sad acoustic guitar, banjo, and piano driven album is more impressive than that? Even if you want to ignore the instruments, he produced most of his other albums, and that alone is incredibly impressive if you pay attention to how they sound.
If you were to read the rest of my post you'd also find that I then explored other qualities of the album other than how impressive it was to make.
Are you really such a child that you can't read the rest of a sentence the minute you disagree with it? How do you ever have constructive conversations?

The number of intstruments played on an album isn't the measure for talent though. In fact, its actually much harder to write a minimalistic album and have as much of an impact as an album with lush arrangements.

Its significantly more challenging to accomplish lush arrangements as a solo artist than it is to write a minimalist album. His album is a superior version to hundreds of bandcamp folk albums that have been around for years. Its superior because he's Sufjan and Sufjan is really good at making music. It is not harder than an album like The Age of Adz or Illinois though. That is a ridiculous notion.
Carrie and Lowell is sad, keep listening to it tthough. Once that wears off it becomes a bit less impressive. There's nothing particularly interesting about the album at all honestly. His voice is ghostly 100% of the time, the lyrics are alright but stuff like The Owl and the Tanager easily beat most songs from Carrie and Lowell. I will say the instrumentation is quite haunting at times, as is his voice. Overall though the album is so reserved all the time, its a bit bland after awhile.
People are in love with the story. The concept of it is heart breaking. Sufjan finally truly opening up while bound in reality is something fans have been waiting for and its a very exciting album.
To me though, learning about his childhood only made his previous albums a lot more heart breaking. A lot of songs make a lot more sense throughout his discography.
Don't get me wrong, I love Carrie and Lowell. Its an amazing album, but its not godtier.

Focused, polished, air tight album. I can definitely see it not appealing to some Radiohead fans but it just seems meticulous to me.
Every song seems strong as well. Its not necessarily an album that depends on you listening to the entire album in one sitting (It is cohesive though).

not that guy but my radiohead ratings are similar, and IR is my favorite radiohead album as well. I like it so much because it's just so, like, intimate, you know? Like the band is incredibly confident, they don't have to prove anything to anyone. And it's their first album that is just happy. The Bends has a lot of angst, OKC, Kid A, and Amnesiac thematically are very paranoid and uncomfortable. HTTT is angry about politics and whatever. In Rainbows is just happy. It's intimate. It speaks in the second person often. Radiohead aren't trying to really make a statement, they're just trying to be, like, life-affirming. When the bass guitar comes in on 15 step, the end of the first part of weird fishes, the background vocals on Reckoner, there's just so many incredible moments on IR. It's radiohead's first happy, satisfied album. And it's really beautiful.

Where would you rank Illinois or Age of Adz compared to Kind of Blue, A Love Supreme, Music for 18 Musicians, Waltz for Debbie, or really any jazz album? Also, the arrangements on Sufjan's albums are cool but not incredibly complex or impressive really. A lot of them are actually pretty simple and just make the sound "larger", for lack of a better term. It's all subjective and stuff but if you're trying to use number of instruments played or even just written for as a metric for musical talent your opinion is going to sound a bit silly. Using technical proficiency as a metric for overall quality is a bit silly as well.

It's always Akuma no Uta, Flood, Feedbacker, and Pink. Sometimes Amplifier Worship gets brought up. I've only seen people make reference to Sun Baked because it has Merzbow on it but I feel like Feedbacker is about as droney as most people hear will tolerate
