What are the "essentials" for dance-music? I've just gotten into DJing and feel really lost when there's millions of stuff to listen to.
Does anybody with experience have recommendations? I'd be happy to discuss.
Cheers

>how to get into EDM
>step one: find a band that you already know of and like
>step two: go on spotify
>step three: go on artist radio
>step four: enjoy
The hustle, the macarena, and the cha cha slide are all good places to start

will do. I'm big on instrumental hiphop but really want to get into funk/disco. can't find any good resources on them though, do you have any reccs?

This.
Giving your self a history lesson will help

Checking out the artists your favourite DJs play a lot helps, mixesdb is your friend

I will! I just found this website which is actually quite handy for explaining the different genres: http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/.

Flying Lotus and J Dilla are you best choices for funky instrumental hiphop.
Also, I'd check out an artist called aso on soundcloud who's very similar.

It explains nothing, Ishkur is a fucking junglehead that hates everything. But I guess it's nice to discover some new stuff.
Just ask /bleep/ they love to help
i'll just leave this classic:

Energy Flash by Simon Reynolds is a great book about different dance music and club culture, u can probably find a pdf pretty easy

also feel obliged to drop this tutorial off, albeit slow-paced it covers about everything that you need to know to become an entry level DJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvnWhOzTPtE
can personally vouch for it

As for DJing, check out https://www.youtube.com/user/ellaskins
He is complete bonkers and some videos cover the exact same thing, but there is some nice info there.
Get familiar with beatmatching, phrasing and mixing in key. In that order.
You can work yourself through the /mu/ recs for techno etc but nothing will save you from the grind of checking out all new releases yourself.

EDM, electronic dance music or dance music?
They're all different things.
Check out mutronica blogspot, full of charts /mu/ made for different genres back in 2011, bit outdated but will probably help.
suprisingly civil for a thread with EDM in the title
