General Jazz Thread
Today is Ben Webster's birthday. What's your favorite Ben Webster recording?
Likely The Art Tatum - Ben Webster Quartet recording, I just really like Art too.
Also, I don't see Charles Tolliver get discussed here terribly much, he's really great.

Ben Webster Encounters Coleman Hawkins
Also, thoughts on Sonny Rollins' Freedom Suite? Didn't enjoy it as much as Tenor Madness or Sax Colossus but I still found it enjoyable
>>63621496
It's a pretty chill album, probably about a 7 for me.
>>63621642
I'm thinking around the same
The suite was actually interesting in concept but Rollins was just too tentative as a soloist
>>63621694
Yeah, some melodies get old and stale. It's got quite an ironic name though so that gave me a laugh.
>>63620650
I should check that one out.
What has everybody been listening to lately?
>>63621462
Tatum - Webster is a favorite of mine too.
What would you recommend by Tolliver?
>>63620650
Other than his stuff with Ellington probably the Oscar Peterson record is my favorite.
>>63621462
I love Tolliver's playing on pic related. He's also on some good Andrew Hill records. As far as his albums as a leader, I really like The Ringer and an album of his called Impact.
>>63621496
>Also, thoughts on Sonny Rollins' Freedom Suite?
It's maybe not on the same level as those other two records or A Night at the Vanguard but it's pretty great as far as sax trio albums go.

Live At Slugs Vol 1/2 is crazy good.
Music Inc (all his live albums are under this name) - Impact: Recorded Live at the Domicile (This live version is much superior to the other Impact imo)

This is really great so far. Thanks for the share.
Haven't heard any good albums in a while. Heard too many to the point of just hearing derivative albums. Listened to Art Farmer - Modern Art and Ahmad Jamal - But Not for Me, but was indifferent to both. Oh well.
>>63623167
I hope I don't get to this point soon. :(
>>63623167
It's all derivative to some extent. If you don't think music can be both great and derivative then you probably have some growing up to do.
>>63623358
It's all just personal preference. I simply prefer more out there jazz as opposed to status quo albums.
>>63623390
Still, you're most likely kidding yourself if you think that any of your favorite "out there" albums are any less derivative
>>63623451
You're latching onto this pretty hard aren't you. You're just adding your own interpretation to what I'm saying. I never said being derivative is a bad thing, nor did I say my favorite jazz albums weren't derivative. Was just throwing out my opinion on recent listening.
>>63623516
i think you're a fucking idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about and doesn't even like jazz that much
>>63623682
Why the hostility? Just for throwing out my opinion? I love jazz. And if you think someone isn't allowed to have their own opinion then I guess we'll just agree to disagree.
>>63623708
that was a different person that me who posted these
>>63623451
>>63623358
I'm not trying to say you don't like jazz. I just don't know what your opinion actually is.
>>63623788
All I'm saying is that I simply like more daring and unique sounding jazz. I am not trying to make a statement on derivativeness as a whole, just was throwing out my opinion since I've hit a rut in listening lately and wanted to open up discussion.
>>63623849
If you don't mind me asking, what is your favorite unique jazz record?
>>63623849
lol ok. maybe stick to what you like then
>>63623915
Cliched pick, but the Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. And yes, I am aware that Mingus was heavily influenced by Ellington on that record.
>>63623919
I prefer to branch out and try new things.
>>63623941
Great record, I've been trying the BYG Actuel label recently and I think they have some really interesting Free and Avant Jazz. Might be worth checking out.
>>63624018
Great pick. Love Cherry's and Sharrock's stuff on there. One of my favorite labels.
>>63624070
Yeah I'm a big fan of Shepp, Murray, Kühn and Arthur Jones on the label, it's pretty crazy how consistent they are.
>>63624153
his solo on cotton tail the album with art tatum and this C jam blues
