Post original works and covers, vocals and instrumentals, heck, even memes and bodily noises.

If you do, from the third vocaroo on, please take some time to critique at least two contributions from others.

another one

how do i into lyrics and songwriting?

as much fun as looping shit and jamming over it is, i never feel like i'm actually "making" anything and it leaves me feeling really unsatisfied when i go back and listen to the shit i bother recording. For whatever reason I dont like learning covers and I think thats been holding me back desu. I just want to play guitar but I've been playing for years now and it feels like I have nothing to show for it.
>>
>>63618853
start humming to your chords until you get a melody out of it, then write lyrics that fit

or you can write some short verses and try to come up with a melody for them - sometimes the pronunciation suggests a certain melody
>>
>>63618853
i mean, the only thing i can think of is that you should try and put serious effort into song structures.
like think about dynamics, where you want it to be lush or where you want it to be spare, where it's loud, where stuff drops out, where stuff stops or suddenly changes. have an idea of what the start, middle and end are- do you want it build to a climax? do you want there to be verses and choruses and stuff? how do you want to layer your riffs or have stuff work over progressions? usually i have most of that stuff planned out before i even start playing or recording- like written down, not in notation, but just 'introduce this riff here' kind of thing.
notice stuff you do frequently and then try and make something that doesn't do that. are there chords and effects that you use a lot? maybe you can try writing riffs that do the opposite of that. once you feel like you've done something successfully, do something else.
set yourself challenges! they don't have to be big- maybe just stuff like 'make something that has only one riff' or 'write something that has three distinct parts'.
listening to your things, you've clearly got ideas. instead of just improvising and setting things down on the spot, think about what you want to accomplish with those ideas beforehand and make it happen and maybe it'll be more satisfying.
>>
>>63618853
>>63619183
if you have a song structure planned out, find the spots where you feel like singing should go- repetitive passages especially benefit from those. try writing a vocal melody by singing or playing something on your guitar, and then find words that fit that meter. or, alternatively, write some words and then try to put music to it.
maybe setting yourself some aesthetic limitations could be helpful? like, 'i'm not going to use x many devices', or 'i'm only going to use these tempos/rhythms' or 'i'm not going to use these influences' and then play around to see what you can do with what you have left. having a clear idea of the exact kind of music that you want to make helps to make things less abstract in my experience.
see if you can find other people to play or write with! having collaborators can be super helpful- some people work best when they're reacting to somebody else's ideas or trying to find something that fits.

idk. none of this advice may be helpful- they're just suggestions. the main thing, i think, is to keep trying new things and finding new ways of doing stuff, to know what you want to do, and to find approaches that work for you. if you have a cool idea, try and think about where you can take it or how you can develop it.

Thanks anons this is great advice.

Its funny because reluctance to set challanges/goals and just general non-commitance are ongoing themes in my life and seems to be the root of this funk I've been wallowing in for the past few years lol. But playing guitar and making music is the only thing in my life that I care enough about to make me really really want to make a change to this behavior and how I use it especially in my approach to music. And maybe if I can learn how to apply this to my music and succeed in even writing one fucking song I can use that mentality in other places in life

Or w/e, we'll see. But I really do appreciate this shit ya'll
>>
>>63620498
Make it a social commitment (so that others expect you or rely on you to finish the project) and spend (this is key) as much time as possible in an environment that helps you accomplish your goals, preferably by excluding nearly all sources of distraction.

Is it normal for the quality of vocal performance to deteriorate when we play the guitar and sing at the same time? Will it be as good as it is without the guitar when I reach intermediate level as a guitarist?

hi i'm kind of drunk sorry http://vocaroo.com/i/s12hZpdJuzy4
>>
>>63627581
thank you i really appreciate that
idk i take a wide array of influences i like the sound of stupid dumb sounding 90s wavetable synths and crappy vsts and sample packs people make
my first synth was a korg 05rw and i learned to play around with the shitty general midi sounds and on top of that i played a lot of aoe as a kid and that game's soundtracks were literally 1998 general midi files so the sound of kind of crappy harps and drums and strings are really sort of ingrained into my writing
plus i like ford and lopatin's stuff

i guess it could also be seen from a more metaphorical standpoint in terms of the song
my relationship with him on the surface seemed real and it was labelled as being real but when you got down to it it was really just an emotionless rendering of an emulated relationship and when i look at it through a bit of a different lens where i am today in my life it's both disgusting and cheesy and played out but kind of beautiful in its own way

Don't ever feel afraid to hurt anyone's feelings when releasing music, it will only repress you and stop you from reaching your peak
I myselfhave some songs that would potentialy get me in trouble with a certain somebody, so I spoke to them about it and asked them to take into account the situation they were written in. Assuming you can't do this just say fuck it and release it. They have a right to hate you as much as you have the right to express yourself

I mean this really shouldn't be that big of a problem to begin with if you keep things vague enough. As long as you don't say their name or some shit you could just deny that its about them. And then you get to play the fun game of calling your bitch of a girlfriend a narcissist for thinking that everything I write is about fucking her. I mean maybe it was about her, but regardless that seems really fucking arrogant to assume it was about her I mean shit the entire song was a fucking metaphor. I mean jesus christ why do they fucking have to do this kind of shit every time goddammit Cara you goddamn bitch.

I honestly don't know any albums that'd be good for a reference, but Jussi Marttinen on youtube has some really good stuff if you ask me.

Damn those are like all my favorite artists. I'd like to hear to some Bill/Smog or Low though.

In the meantime...

i don't know this one off the top of my head so i think i'm going to do a few more bill or low songs and come back to it

Love that song. Interesting to hear it sung in a tenor range, but really great nonetheless. You're probably one of the best singers I've heard in one of these threads.

I guess I'll keep the Bill train a-rollin.
