>inb4 a bunch of japanese music that is nothing like Number Girl

I don't care if recs are Japanese bands but pls don't rec completely different shit just because it's japanese; that kinda happened last time I tried finding similar bands.

I never listened to Number Girl before lol. I'd suggest Spangle Call Lilli Line. If you want my suggestion I'd say or is one of their best albums.

congrats you did exactly what OP said not to do
>>
i'm surprised at how they've never cashed in on a pixies / at the drive in / mbv etc. type of reunion yet.
>>
Bro check out One Ok Rock

p4k reviewed their japan-only reissues so there's definitely some PR/label cash flowing around that name, surprised they haven't tried to issue the albums in the US.

It's hard to find something that's similar. Number Girl was really great.

Their contemporaries did not sound very similar to them, but you might like Spiral Chord, which has one of the members of Number Girl, I believe.

A bit heavier but also catchier.

Have you listened to Zazen Boys? It's the frontman Mukai Shutoku's band that he formed after Number Girl broke up.

Only some of their songs are similar to Number Girl's sound, though. They experiment with hip hop and funk with some odd time signature stuff.

The problem with them is that they were incredibly influential, like Pixies, and all the other Japanese indie bands who took inspiration from them moved towards a more pop type sound. Bands like AKFG, Brian the Sun, or Mass of the Fermenting Dregs don't have the noisy qualities or the intensity, though I do like Mass and a couple Brian the Sun songs (BtS' song 13月の夜明け feels like a decent ripoff of School Girl Distortional Addict's opener).

Tricot is the only band that took a lot of inspiration from them that I've found that retains any of the energy of Number Girl.

If you haven't, you should try to listen to some of the older canon of American post-hardcore.

Dinosaur Jr. has a similar aesthetic

Mukai's vocals have a strange unconventional quality that's reminiscent of David Yow, of Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid.

Maybe Fugazi? I'm reaching at this point. You're probably familiar with all these American bands.

Wow this post came out a lot bigger than I expected it to. Sorry.

Also, if you have the time, check out Pod by The Breeders. Fronted by Kim Deal of the Pixies, who were a huge influence on Number Girl (obviously, given their song Pixie Du). A bit too sparse in some areas to be identical, but a decent blend of raw punk aesthetic and pop sensibilities.

I know all those american bands, ye

Glad you liked at least one of the bands. The frontman of Spiral Chord was in another band called Cowpers before he formed SP, but I haven't found a download for them so I can't tell you what they sound like with any sort of confidence.

Have you ever listened to the Washington D.C. band Jawbox? They were close friends with Fugazi.

i noticed that. i have no idea what the bassist is doing now, but the rest seem to be in good performing-shape so even if it was just them 3 plus a new bassist, i'd go see that.

Hüsker Dü and the Pixies influenced them, at the very least. I'll also second AKFG, Tricot and Masudore. Maybe try Ring Toshite Shigure and Big Black.
