Honestly, TPTB is significantly better than TPAB. I guess TPAB is "good" but it is basically the album equivalent of an Oscar-bait movie. It's also never a good idea to end your album with 6 minutes of talking, I truly could not care less about the message or whatever, it's sort of boring, overbearing, and highly self impressed/important.
IMO TPAB was too heavy on the narrative, album structure and politics. It bogged down the musicality of it, which made it not listenable beyond the first several weeks. I might listen to it every once in a while but almost never all the way through.
I sit down and listen to TPTB all the way through on the regular. It hasn't gotten close to getting old even after the huge time gap between NOTM and JD. Between the huge sonic variety and cryptic lyrics there's a shit ton to digest which gives it way more longevity.
I also get tired of constant bombardment with MUH BLACK PROBLEMZ bullshit which gives me even more incentive to not listen to TPAB.
Everything Kendrick puts into words, Stefan puts between the words. Especially on NotM. I like Kendrick but they are at different levels of expression entirely.
I appreciate the collection of genres going on in TPAB though. It's a nice gesture but TPTB is more exciting in many ways.

It's really hard to explain what is so addictive about NotM's sound and style to someone who doesn't enjoy it, but you don't have to like it to see how much concentration and skill they put into making it. It's their most intricate record in everything from the lyrics to the structure, and feels like a conscious effort by DG to create not just awesome music but a trap for the listener. A bonafide conceptual art piece of mind-fucking fascination. It has a different kind of effect on your brain than any of their other music.
