Syd's songs on the Piper At the Gates of Dawn sound like retarded Teletubbies music. I don't think Syd was a genius. I understand that whimsy is a key aspect to a lot of psychedelia, but I think that Syd's take on it was just obnoxious and grating. That said, I think the songs of his that were left off of A Saucerful of Secrets (Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream) are both great tracks. They should have been included on the album, but apparently they scared the rest of the band, because Pink Floyd have always been plebs when it comes to what they produce.

There are parts on Matilda mother that are okay, but Syd kills it with his obnoxious vocals and writing, like that stupid fucking "Waitiiiiiiiiiiing" part. I don't know, I'm really just not a fan of Syd's whole style, especially on Piper. It's hard to tell if it's Syd I don't like or his sound on that particular album, because I like his stuff from the Saucerful of Secrets era, and he didn't really put out enough work for me to tell if the problem was him or Pink Floyd collectively in 1967, because I also think Roger's song on Piper was terrible. Out of all of them, I think Rick had the best songs at the time in 1967, during their pop era, though none of his solo contributions made it onto Piper.
