How do you listen to noise?

How do you criticize noise?

What have you enjoyed recently?

Any upcoming releases or shows that you're excited about?
>>
>>63362509
>How do you criticize noise?
If it's painful to listen to, it probably sucks.

If it's not dynamic at all, it definitely sucks.
>>
>>63362554
Post some examples of dynamic noise.

My go-to release when I think of dynamic-sounding noise is probably Sickness - I Have Become the Disease that Made Me

Thanks!

>How do you listen to noise?
My preferred method is live, while sitting on a couch drinking red wine.

Alot of small-time noise shows seem to have couches and red wine (at least in Vancouver).
>>
Any noise with screeching vocals, preferably of the female variety?
>>
>>63362906
Puce Mary and Pharmakon come to mind, Sewer Godess is good too.
>>
what's your favorite prurient release and why is it black vase
>>
>>63362509
Why would I criticize noise. I just listen and enjoy, or not enjoy, just like any other genre. Haven't got enough time to analyse and dissect something, when I could just enjoy it.
>>
>>63365889
most people don't understand that noise is a folk music, and criticizing it on an individual release by release level is as stupid as going to baptist churches and criticizing the gospel choir or traveling to 1930s southern prisons and criticizing the blues musicians. noise is only understood through an ethnomusicological lense.

even worse are people who treat noise musicians like pop stars, like this guy >>63365126
>>
>>63366359
That's a really good point, I don't often hear people talk about noise as a type of folk music.

As for pop star worship, I don't think it's such a problem as it happens within almost every musical niche.

Hey guys
>>
>>63366528
oh you're right dude we can discuss a cassette and performance culture just as easily as we can album/single based rock/pop music without any necessary aspects being lost

>protip no we can't and thats how we get idiots who buy Mezbow t-shirts
>>
>>63366641
So speaking of cassette and performance culture, anyone come across any interesting noise on tape recently?
>>
is there any genre more style-over-substance than noise out there? i don't think there is

>muh cassette culture
>muh ultra-elite noise tape limited to 23 copies
>muh special packaging made of barbed wire and pubic hair that smells like raspberries and goat cum
>muh flashy artwork made to distract me from how uninteresting the actual sounds are
>muh contrived concepts and philosophies developed to give an illusion of substance to fucking TV static sounds

suckers
>>
>>63367380
You could pick apart any genre like this with your generic or over-the-top descriptions. So what i'm trying to say is that you're not clever or special.
>>
>>63366641
Ever think that some people actually enjoy listening to the sounds of noise, and that maybe you don't have to be so pretentious and assign a singular truth to all of noise, and in 2016, not 1980 nonetheless?
>>
>>63362798

So Gerogerigegege just released a new album, anyone listen yet?
>>
>>63368471
wait, i'm retarded, it comes out April 20
>>
is the gerogerigegege actually seen as a good noise band? as a band whose new album is something to get excited about?

i thought it was generally agreed upon that they were a shitty comedy band
>>
>>63368499
Generally agreed by whom?
>>
>>63368499
They have a handful of ok albums but yeah, they're mostly about retarded comedy nonsense. I think actually hating them is ridiculous though, because it's pretty clear that they don't try to be deep or meaningful about their music, and instead just do it for shits and giggles.
They're kinda like that one retarded friend that everyone likes to keep around because they always say dumb shit and makes everyone laugh.

great record, remote view does things to me. have you heard his older recordings? where i was is stellar. much more 'pure' noise i suppose, whatever that means.

also i'm playing my first show tomorrow night, supporting a local doom band. our setup is me on a large floor tom which is run through a small distortion, running a sequencer, and wailing into a contact mic, while my buddy plays guitar through an enormous pedal chain to the point where it doesn't sound like a guitar.

has anyone got any tips regarding stage anxiety? i have high hopes for the 'showmanship' aspect, we've practiced a lot and i feel confident about being a frontman of sorts, but the idea of actually presenting this project to a crowd terrifies me. it's very, very personal stuff and i plan on putting my all into it, but i'm really apprehensive about how it will be received.
>>
>>63367380
None of this is bad, you've just trivialised it by using shitty language.

>>
>>63370634
I'm tight on cash right now so hopefully I can snag at least one of them. Probably gonna go with the sonambient one just for the hundred some page booklet with essays.
>>
>>63370739

talking of cd boxsets i hope i can find a copy of that broken flag retrospective for a good price
>>

Same here. I've found so much good stuff just browsing through boomkat. And it looks like there are some of those sets going for around $55 on discogs.
>>
>>63366359
>even worse are people who treat noise musicians like pop stars

honestly i'm less concerned about people treating noise musicians like pop stars and more concerned about a lot of these younger noise musicians(the posh isolation crew in particular springs to mind immediately) wanting and trying to be popstars
it's a bad example to set
>>
>>63371506
you make a really, really good point. i had never considered this before.

>>63371506
This. I could care less about who fans gawk over
>>
>>63371506
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's completely turned off by what Posh Isolation and the like do.
>>
>>63372640
i could be totally wrong in my perception, but what they're doing feels way too weird and careerist to me, much more focused on building a brand(and just the idea of brand-building when talking about this type of underground music and art feels repulsive to me) and an image than actually putting out worthwhile records
>>
>>63373034
I share that perception. To a large degree the audio is pretty unengaging to me as well.

i still love most loke rahbek projects to be honest

You can post your stuff. I for one welcome it from people who actually have something to say, put effort into their stuff, and actually care about the art. Unfortunately, people in these threads are biased against anything that's not coming from a big name cassette label, so regardless of the fact that several people used to post their stuff in the early days of these generals, many people shit on people's work for no real reason other than that it has the potential to be effortless.

>>
>>63377360
can anyone explain what exactly the fuck is going on in the Exploring Jezebel performance
>>
>>63377653
seems like a performance based on the concept of the project, with the guys in the suits(fernow and who else? lapke, maybe? and who else?) playing out the roles of the emasculated, powerless males with no power or rights of their own and becka playing out the role of the dominant female
only instead of the typical extremist fetish angle of graphic and violent BDSM sex and submission or whatever this is based around the more absurd premise of them not even having the right to decide where to sit/stand and for how long

i believe the audio is prerecorded, at least i remember that distorted voice from one of the older EJ tapes

in all honesty EJ is the perfect fucking fit as an opening act for yellow tears(though i believe ahlzagailzehguh was also performing that night)

I'm listening to pic related atm, and it's really cool noisy drone. I found it through Mika Vainio but I haven't heard anything by Joachim Nordwall. does anyone have any opinions on this man? I'mma download some of his stuff cause this is really good but if anyone has an album they particularly enjoy by him please tell me. if it helps he's a member of Fire! Orchestra, who have been in my backlog for months, and he co-founded Börft Records.

nordwall is a member of the skull defekts, a great band
he also runs the excellent iDEAL recordings label and occasionally puts out solo material(hospital just put out a new tape of his last month, in fact), none of which i have heard

it's an HP release featuring a massively influential band, of course it's gonna get ripped

More interestingly, how about any noise releases that aren't on tape? Noise is so overrun with tapes I rarely bother to check a release out if it's only on tape, since most tape only noise is shit. Post good new noise vinyl and cds instead.
>>
>>63382515
>I rarely bother to check a release out if it's only on tape, since most tape only noise is shit

that's silly considering how many noise labels, even the big ones, still place a heavy focus on tape-only releases
tapes are an integral part of the culture, you're gonna miss out on a lot of vital shit if you avoid them
>>
>>63382001
I don't know, but Akitsa's chicken squawls in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOUsInVfxfE get me every time

Also, Ash Pool a best
>>
>>63382686
O.T. is one of the most unhinged and original vocalists in all of BM, it doesn't surprise me at all that fernow holds akitsa in such high regard

>Ash Pool a best

i wasn't huge on the last 7" and their half of the AP/akitsa split but yeah, they're a great band
i'm kinda hoping that last year's reissue of the split with akitsa and the fact that fernow and lapke spent a lot of time together during the FNF/unmasking the insect sessions means that there's work underway on new ash pool material
>>
>>63382840
I'm not a fan of Lash onward Ash Pool much at all. It got way too generic. Every other Ash Pool release is amazing though. Unforced, raw yelled vocals and kick ass lo-fi instrumentals
>>
>>63382663
Well I could have phrased it better, I do check out some tape only releases but I'm not as likely to do so since it's so easy to release a tape and there's so much no effort noise released on tape. Also I think the tape culture is okay for small releases but also really silly, I mean 500 copies of this for instance and people paying like $60 for it, lol just release it on cd or vinyl then I might care. Noise fans that prefer tapes to vinyl or cds confuse me.

i was really into for which he plies the lash, i liked the early 90s death metal influence that crept into their sound on that album
the material after that album i could take or leave, though i agree that the material preceding FWHPTL was the best
especially the two 7"es and those early demo tapes

did you hear time crypt? really bizarre one-off sci-fi death metal project from fernow and lapke, one of the weirdest things those guys have done in terms of atmosphere and concept
>>
>>63382001
similar focus on noisy atmosphere/texture, similar themes
>>
>>63382914
>there's so much no effort noise released on tape

i can agree with that, though as long as you're paying attention to the right labels, distros and artists you can easily separate the wheat from the chaff in that regard

>I mean 500 copies of this for instance and people paying like $60 for it

the 2nd-hand market prices for a lot of noise releases tend to be retarded, it's got more to do with the artist/label in question and how rabid of a following they have among collectors than it does with the format itself
i mean check this out

https://www.discogs.com/Genocide-Organ-Klan-Kountry/release/1074447

in any case the box-set was pretty affordable when it came out as a direct order from boomkat(though i understand that the shipping prices from the UK to the US are pretty steep)
it's also one of the best things that's been released this year so far, in any genre
>>
>>63383193
If that tape set was released on cd and had 500 copies made I doubt it would be going for $60 already. Also that Genocide organ release had only 31 copies made so I'm not surprised the price is high.
