I love Daniel Johnston. His songs are pretty hit or miss, but he's got some good tracks and his life is interesting to read about.

Keep in mind his earlier stuff is a lot more...abstract and freewheeling. His post What of Whom material becomes a lot more minimalist lyrically. This peaks with 1990.
