>ever downloading mp3s
if you're gonna pirate, only download flacs. that way you don't have to worry about if it's a transcode. even if it's a transcode, it'll be easy to tell. with mp3s you're not sure if the person just re-encoded 320kbps three times or something
>>
>>63351399
Unless it's on what.cd you ponce
>>
>>63351467
again, like i said:

if it's a 320kbps mp3 transcoded multiple times in 320kbps (e.g. 320kbps stream recorded), it's really hard to tell the difference

you'd be guessing because it'd be like 20.2k cutoff vs 20.5k cutoff

besides, if you're autistic enough to get what.cd you should be downloading flacs
>>
>>63351545
if you can't tell the difference what do u care?
>>
>>63351593
i can tell the difference. those sound a little off

this is why i don't even bother with mp3 or aac files anymore, i just get the flac (CD rip) whenever possible
>>
>>63351545
I'm not motivated to transcode everything I get to 320 or V0 just so it'll fit on my MP3 player. I just trust what.cd for that.
>>
>>63350580
Most people can distinguish 128 kbps from higher bitrates. 192 kbps is usually considered transparent, though it obviously depends on the listener and their equipment — tests have shown that even 160 kbps is transparent to most listeners. Nobody has proved that they were able to make a distinction between 320 kbps and lossless as far as I know (though many people believe they are).

>>63350475
Just download FLACs from Soulseek, convert them and you'll be fine. Without having to worry about ratios, which is the main advantage of Soulseek.
>>
>>63352037
>download FLACs from soulseek

Dis right here 3bh famtano
>>
>>63352037
>>63352199
You're going to have to do a spectral on it too to ensure it wasn't transcoded back up to lossless.
>>
>>63350475
>my mom bought me giant headphones and now I call myself an audiophile
>look at this meaningless shit
>>
>all these people saying "durr you can't tell the difference anyway"

This is only true if you're not listening on high end equipment, which admittedly is often the case. However, if you're listening to quality studio monitors in a treated room, for example, the difference between a 320kbps mp3 and a FLAC is clearly discernable, and between 192 and FLAC is like night and day. It really depends on your listening environment.

Also, respectable clubs won't let DJs play anything below 320
>>
people who claim they can hear the difference between 320 and FLAC are such utter cunts

also

i never understand why people do this shit >>63352609. why on earth would you make a transcode - i just don't get it
>>
>>63352609
Just get ones with .log files. You know the niggas for real then.
>>
>>63350475
Nice meme, I'll bite.
I check all my shit with spek after it's downloaded. It's quite rare that I have these kind of issues at all. Soulseek is excellent and has had literally every album I ever have needed.
It all depends on who uploaded it. I always grab a 320 copy with reasonable file sizes that match the other files shared by people, or if there are none or the only 320 copy has issues on the spectrogram, I get FLAC and turn it into 320, which is the most reliable option.

If you're converting for personal use anyway why would you voluntarily create such a bloated file as a 320k MP3?
This is 128kbps.

Thats funny, because mp3 has a cutoff at 20khz, 128kbps lowers that to around 16 or 18khz

does anyone here download FLAC but then compress it 320kbps? Saw an anon claim to do this in a thread long ago was wondering what other people think of this or if they do it

Here's Vorbis encoded at ~128k with VBR enabled. I normally bump it a level to Q5~160k when dealing with Vorbis, just to be safe.
>>
Why do people still fuck with this placebo shit

Headphone/gear quality is pretty much everything. You can hear defects in 128kbps with better equipment, but when you jump from dollar store headphones to decent cans, even the shittiest files will sound better
>>
>>63357760
I know you like using the word placebo, but this isn't a FLAC thread. You can tell the difference between 128kbps MP3 and the same bitrate in most other formats having only spent around $20 on headphones, and can certainly notice when your 320 is a transcode from something less.
>>
>>63358431
Damn you're right, I'm drunk. Transcodes suck, carry on.

more like every surface level album reviewed by pitchfork is on wcd

but finding niche stuff is really difficult, and wcd punishes people who need it because of their horribly bottlenecked seeds

No. The site just has a shitty selection of niche stuff that isn't experimental music, and no way to effectively gain back ratio from rare stuff. I'm not going to download p4k-core albums or rip shit from bandcamp just to stay even.

plenty of transcodes go up on what, but the community is a bit more diligent when it comes to assessing and reporting them (particularly with higher profile releases)
>>
>>63358886

I paid $7 for a seedbox during a freeleech and I'm pretty much set for life. Just downloaded a bunch of popular collages and let it run for a month.
