It really depends on what genres you like, those can influence your taste in hip-hop quite a bit.

But for obvious starters: of
>MF DOOM's projects, including collabs
>Mos Def
>Lupe Fiasco
>EL-P
>cLOUDDEAD

Instrumental hip-hop also tends to be a good entry point for most new hip-hop listeners, so check out DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib, Knxwledge and Clams Casino.

Yeah you gotta listen to Kanye's first two albums, very very different from mbdtf, also, Illadelph Halflife by the Roots

You crazy for not liking Illmatic but you probably will eventually if you keep listening to hip hop, it set a bar for poetic rapping that has still not been beat to this day and every hip hop artist you'll listen to probably thinks it's 10/10

The only people who bother to post in these trash threads are the morons who already listen to hip hop. Hip hop is the laziest and most accessible genre of popular music on the planet; I've met middle schoolers have the same taste as hip hop fans who have been listening to the genre for forty years.

tl;dr (I know hip hop fans have short attention spans) stop making the same fucking thread over and over and go back to r/hiphopheads

Not sure if my tastes will help. But my favorite genres are jazz, folk and post-rock. I guess I'll start with the instrumentals, since what mostly bores me in rap music, is the rapping (yeah, i know), it will take me some time to proper enjoy it. Maybe should I read the lyrics along?

Yes, I am saying that. Take Care tried to expand on Drake's "original"(lol) style of singing in hip hop, and came out a messily thrown together record that relied on flat singing and fabricated pathos.

And holy shit man where is your bar for essential at? Every single Ye album? Ever? You probably thought Yeezus was original hahaha. Ye's essential albums are college dropout and late reg. I'd also accept 808's because it actually was a very original release however obnoxious it was

I'm not simply a backpack rap fan tho, and btw fuck that term and you for using it, but I listen to a ton of popular or otherwise "mainstream" hip hop like young thug, juicy j, jeezy, lil herb, chance, I could go all day. I just find Drake to not be a very good artist, and someone who has found a lane that has only been run over a million times a long time ago so nobody remembers it and they think he's original. This happens in music all the time. Do you have a retort for my argument or do you always resort to unfounded character attacks when faced with reasoning?

>>
>>63350466
Nah I think Ye's essentials are the ones you listed

I thought Take Care was a solid album, with a nice blend of rapping and singing, but I see as a top album for Drake because the only other albums I'm a fan of are If You're Reading This Its Too Late and So Far Gone

If you don't think take Take Care is an essential than id give a vote for So Far Gone

Ah well it seems we agree. I guess I misinterpreted your post or something

I mean if I had to pick a Drake album to be essential, it would be Take Care. That being said I don't think any of his albums are even close to essential
>>
>>63350726
I'm torn really, I somewhat agree that he might not have an essential, but at the same time he's so huge, one of those rappers that has mainstream appeal (dont get me wrong rap is mainstream but this guy takes it to another level) and for that reason I believe he needs an album on the "essential list", so people getting into hip hop can see what the big deal (or not so big deal is), i meant thats what essential list are for right, people new to the genre?

I don't, my reasoning might be stupid but thats how I feel

I'll change the question a little bit...

What are some good hip-hop albums regardless of lyrics? English isn't my first language and I can't understand anything the rappers are saying, but I fucking love some of the more experimental production on even mainstream hip-hop albums like To Pimp a Butterfly and The Life of Pablo.

I also like Death Grip's The Money Store.
>>

>good hip-hop albums regardless of lyrics
>enlighs isn't my first language
>I fucking love some of the more experimental production or even mainstream hip hop
Correct

>I can't understand anything.
>Life of Pablo
Mostly wrong. I can understand about 80% of rapping, but the fact they always sing too fast and keep mentioning cultural references and slang bars, I can't totally get it/relate to. Most of the time, I don't even read the lyrics along, I just don't care too much.
I don't like Kanye.

But yea, pretty much this. I enjoy the sound within the music, and a good production.
