I find trouble keeping up the tight rhythm whilst playing long phrases of steady 16th or even 8th notes, whilst faster but shorter licks are usually no problem. Anyone else has the same problem?
>>
>>63344195
I used to have the same problem. Just keep practicing those riffs and it'll go away.
>>
>>63344195
Just loads of stamina training bro

I'm thinking of getting into making some music, does anyone here have any recommendations for DI boxes and audio interfaces?
I only have a single practice amp with no head, so I don't really want to be using a microphone until I can actually get some better gear, right now it might as well just be a hobby sort of thing
>>
Hey guy, i have a question.
So ive been learning guitar for a few months and went to my first lesson is sunday, the teacher told me i cant play nearly half of the stuff because of a broken pinky. Should i just sell the regular guitar and go lefty?
>>
>>63344407
God no, just wait for it to heal, trust me, it'll be way easier for you later on down the line
>>
>>63344407
>nearly half of the stuff because of a broken pinky

Get a new fucking teacher.

Sure, not using the pinky will limit you to a certain extent. You'll probaby never shred at 1200bpm. It certainly won't stop you being a decent guitar player though. Just look at Django.
>>
>>63344451
Wait, I'm confused. Is this a currently broken pinky or an old injury that's left your finger with limited movement?

Well personally I'd just play without the fourth finger. Switching to lefty is a pretty major move but I guess if you've only just started then it might be a reasonable choice.

Random musings:

1. Look up PRP therapy, it's known to heal cartlilage
2. You could switch hands - strum with left, finger with right
3. You could switch to a lap guitar or a similar setup
4. Learn to play without the pinky - ignore what people with 5 fingers can play an concentrate on other aspects - like people here say - listen to Dijango for inspiration.
>>
>>63344466
Oh, shit, that's rough dude, if it has only been a couple months, yeah, go left handed, the only real big issue with that is that left handed guitars are a lot less common than right handed ones
>>
Hey guys, probably some of you may know where I can get blueprints or drafts of BC Rich Stealth in pdf or vector?
>>
>>63344513
>the only real big issue with that is that left handed guitars are a lot less common than right handed ones
Which really won't even be a problem once you invest into a good guitar that'll last you for as long as you wish to with time to time checks and upgrades
>>
>>63344466
If you really want it fixed you need to go to an occupational therapist, they can help you get that thing working again. It will take time and effort, You may never get 100% but 50% is better than nothing. In the meantime just learn slowhand (3 finger technique), and get really good at it.

I mean there are a few models that look actually okay like the Mockingbird but the ones that've 50 edges and are shaped like flames or something just should look horrible to everyone. Or maybe I'm just narrowminded.
>>
>>63344773
The only design from BC Rich that I like is the Warlock, it's probably one of their only guitar that doesn't look like someone dropped it in a wood chipper.

That said, after actually buying a Warlock, the build quality was fucking atrocious, I'm talking build it yourself starter kit levels of quality here.
>>
>>63344830
That's a shame. I think they're marketed at, no disrespect to anyone here, mostly to children just learning guitar who listen to metal genres so they get away with less quality control and cheaper parts.

But from what I've gathered, they're pretty cheap too right?

Go out for a walk and look closely at leaves on trees.
You'll be surprised to find weird, original forms. The nature is never boring or sterile, and many people think these shapes are more natural than some "vintage", "cozy" instruments, that were in fact designed for a sole cold purpose of industrial mass production.

Or maybe I'm not as good as I thought?
>>
>>63346310
You're probably just getting over the initial feeling of "holy shit I played a song I'm so fucking good" and are realizing how you fall on the talent spectrum. Compare yourself now to when you first started and you'll see what I mean. Best of luck anon, I'll be buying your album in a few years I'm sure.
>>
Okay, so I can play my amp (Orange CR120 solid state, Orange cab) at a comfortable bedroom volume and get great tone out of it with all my pedals and shit, but when I'm playing with a guy on drums and need to turn it way up, the sound goes to shit.

The quality suffers and it always seems like I need to turn either bass or treble way down when I turn the volume up.

Anyone know a way to get a relatively clean, tight distorted sound when playing at loud volumes?
>>
>>63344407
You can play a shit ton of stuff without ever using your pinky. If you work on moving your other three fingers really quickly you won't even need it period.

Most basic chords won't require the pinky anyway (though I've had some people tell me I'm forgetting G, but I just use my ring finger for the high E and let the B string ring open).
>>
>>63344958
>>63344773
This.

Just avoid cheaply made warlocks. I borrowed a Warlock from a friend once and I really couldn't believe how poorly made it was. I always joke that BC Rich is the only company that makes guitars by pouring sawdust and glue into a mold.
>>
>>63346310
>Or maybe I'm not as good as I thought?
This to some extent maybe combined with with this anon said:>>63346369

I hit those "barriers" every once in a while, but with dedicated practicing I improve over and over again. Then once I've improved so much that I can notice it, in some time I'll hit the "holy fuck am I this shit?" phase and repeat the cycle really.

I suggest you record your practices if you don't already, I can't stress enough how much it helps you with understanding what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong. Record your practice lession then come back to it in a day or two and analyze, but don't critizise.

I doubt that you're bad or getting worse anon, but instruments are a discipline that you always keep on improving upon with enough will power and you're never "done" so to speak.
>>
>>63346310
Dunning-Kreuger effect, mang.

The best players don't focus on how good they are, they focus on how little they really know.

Also, you don't have to be a great technical player to be a great writer. Memes aside look at Jeff Mangum. Most of his songs take about ten minutes tops to learn, but they all sound damn good because he knew how to use those simple chords.

Picked up the guitar 7 years ago, played on and off, past month I made the decision to stop fucking about and actually build some technique.

A few weeks ago I could downpick 40 bars of 8ths@160bpm, now I'm down to 150. My up-picks are still good though.

Also this gives me trouble 16ths@100bpm

Don't use as much distortion as you think you need. Eventually add in an OD in front of it if you want to play high-gain stuff.
>>
>>63346835
Either use fingerpicking (classical guitar where the thumb plays some sort of bass line comes to mind), or two handed tapping.
ERGs and every alternative tuning that gives more range can also help.

>I've actually finished recording an album, but there's some sections I've listened to and they're really fucking sloppy and off time.
I've generally no problems at all playing well in live/jam situations but struggle with this when recording stuff. What I do however is that I do as many takes as it takes to get it right. It can get really frustrating and take a lot of time but it's required for flawless recordings.

Could somebody recommend me a practice routine?

I played a lot of guitar in high school but I seemed to be stuck in a rut, after I went to university I mostly stopped practicing. Now I want to get back.

> Starting goals
I'm mostly interested in playing solo arrangements and maybe one day playing with a singer.

1. Comp to jazz standards so later I can sing over them.
2. Play solo arrangements of jazz or jazzed-up pop tunes
3. Play and sing at the same time
> Where I am now
Before I stopped playing guitar I could play a couple of arrangements (Autumn Leaves, My Favorite Things, Canteloupe Isand ...) I even seem to remember some of them now but I'm uneven as fuck (rythm/tempo issues).

Can't comp for shit except very easy comping like four to the bar.

Can't sing and play at the same time at all. Wanted to start with something simple like Fuck Her Gently. The guitar part is there but can't sing and play at all.
> End line goals
1. Improvizing. I'd mostly like to play solo arragements and accompany myslef in the style of similar to Lenny Breau/Ted Greene/Chet Atkins
2. Explore different styles - funk, regge. I'd like to groove more like Charlie Hunter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La2gmwSQJo0
>>
>>63344388
I am by no means an expert but I use a presonus audiobox 2x2 and I am very satisfied with it. Use it with a guitar and a theremin if that means anything
>>
>>63346373
Less gain. For most styles of music, a solid state amp + high gain + high volume is not going to give you the sound you (probably) want. Solid states will start clipping and you're going to lose any clarity in your chords and it will be a fuzzy mess.

One of my major problems is my gear is totally shitty, I have a horrible fender amp with a single wah pedal and a fucking shitty fender squire that I've had since I first started playing, and an Ibanez acoustic. Where do I begin with gear and stuff? I now have a job so I have some money I can spend. in terms of sound I really like loud fuzzy shit like Dinosaur Jr., The Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, etc. so I was considering getting a Jazzmaster but I also know thats the most generic hipster guitar out there. In terms of pedals and amps I am totally lost there. I would really appreciate some help, thanks guys.
>>
>>63351616
>generic hipster guitar

I mean, you have the right influences and idea to use a JM properly.

They're great guitars and as long as you're not playing them for the looks and then complaining that it isn't a Telecaster (the previous indie sweetheart guitar) and sticking all sorts of shit on the bridge and putting buzz stops on them you'll be fine

If you love fuzz Jazzmasters react really good to them, especially octave fuzzes cause of all the harmonic overtones you get from the JM string length.

In short get a JM and a tube amp you prick
>>
>>63351616

get a strat and a tube amp
>>
>>63351857
This, you prick.

Jay Mascis swears by a Rams Head Big Muff too. He has a pretty good rig rundown video for pedal ideas.
>>
>>63351616
The Big Muff is J Mascis in a pedal
There's so many different variations, but I would recommend the Deluxe one, it's the best value for your money IMO. It can sound exactly like most of the others and it's only around 20 bucks more expensive
>>
>>63351972
>Rams Head Big Muff

are these vintage or do they still make them new.

seems like they are all fairly expensive online
>>
>>63352115

Vintage

Many builders make clones though
>>
Hello there fellow /mu/sicians,
I've been getting back to guitar again, now that I got the willpower to actually train and improve. A friend lent me his acoustic guitar, however I'm probably going to buy an electric one next month. A guy at a local music shop showed me the Epiphone Slash AFD Les Paul Special-II Performance Pack, and I've been blown away by it. Will I be doing any wrong by spending my money on it?

I had the chance to play the guitar and use the combo included in the pack, and I've been blown away. Really like the sound, and especially the feel (tiny, very easy to play on), but I don't understand the intricacies of guitar purchases, hence my post here.
>>
>>63352195

do you plan to record and play live and with friends and put in big amounts of time and money?

if so get a better guitar

if not just get what you feel comfortable with
>>
>>63352195
>starter packs

Don't
>>
>>63350977

>butthurt metalfag detected.
>>
>>63352252
Seconding this, get something better that isn't a starter pack or sub 200$ new
>>
>>63352195

Third: Don't do it. Go spend a few hundred on a guitar and a few hundred on some simple and effective gear instead of spending cash on starter packs. Utter waste of money, just as what you purchase is an utter waste of material.
>>
>>63352232
I'm currently very much a beginner, so I won't need an expensive guitar. But thanks man, I will probably get this one, that's why I am in a love hate relationships with shops; once you put your hands on something, you're done.
>>63352252
>>63352282
>>63352302
I know starter packs are shitty, but I'm European (ie. poorfag) and I can't spend much money. This is pretty much at my price limit as is.
>>

>>
>>63352320
>I know starter packs are shitty, but I'm European (ie. poorfag) and I can't spend much money. This is pretty much at my price limit as is.
Then keep saving and buy something decent. Having a bad guitar and no money for something that won't sound and play like shit is infuriating once you plateau because of the guitar.

Big Muffs are pretty inexpensive

if you want the Mascis sound get a Marshall if you want the Youth get a Fender

Yeah I'm going for the Mascis sound more, so is it better to try and find like a vintage amp or something newer? I'm sure there's some difference, but for something loud and fuzzy is one better than the other? I'm sure there are large differences in price as well.

tube amps are pretty pricey, vintage or not

To be honest (gg will shit on me for this) you don't NEED a tube amp. It will sound better, but it's not absolutely essential to get a decent tone.

Guys, I own a Behringer DD400 (digital delay) but I really want an octave fuzz as I hardly even use the delay on my board.

My friend is down to trade his Danelectro Octave Distortion French Toast for my Behringer DD400 Digital Delay.

Good trade? Yes no?
>>
>>63354861
Honestly if you want a 10 string, the choice is sparse.
I don't see the point in having an instrument that's over 9 string and still tuned in fourths though, considering that an 8 string goes to F# (or E if you drop it, like a bass), and a 9 string to C# or B
>>
>>63353881

I mean it's a shitty trade cause you're trading those shitty ass chinese nigger Danelectro pedals and shitty Behringer pedals

who gives a shit just do it
>>
>>63354880

french toast sounds tasty right now
>>
>>63350461
Yeah, I studied classical guitar for a few years and if you can play diminished sweeps and the harmonic minor scale it's super easy to sound like Malmsteen. Jazz is way more rewarding and much more fun to play.
>>
>>63354880
Both shit so nobody loses out and you both win by getting something you actually want. Go for it.
>>
>>63354973
well it's still kinda fun to play, but not really rewarding once you get past the point of "hey I'm going fast"
>>
>>63354980
I hear the French Toast is actually a really good pedal, just an underrated gem that gets shigged at. Is it true?
>>
>>63355016

>>
>>63355016

you would do better if you traded them for magic beans
>>
>>63353484
Mmmmm and tubes sound way less compressed and are much more responsive to playing dynamics. I used to not care and didn't really think there was much of a difference, but now I'll go on YouTube and watch those "Guess Which Kind of Amp This Is" videos and I can easily pick out a tube vs. solid state/modeling amp.
>>
I've recently lost all inspiration for playing.
I left a band i was with for 3-4 years, took a few months off, thinking its a case of the i played too much and its time to put the guitar down. But it's been like 6 months now, and nothing. I pick up a guitar every so often, run through an old setlist, cover some new stuff. But when it comes to creating my own music, i just hit a brick wall, or it ends up sounding like a gimmick.
Idk whats wrong i never had this problem before, music just used to flow organically, now i have to force it and its comes out like shit. Anyone else had this problem?
>>
>>63355043
Do you go to people's houses and guess what brand of toilet roll they buy or just wipe your arse like a fucking normal person.
>>
>>63355042
yeah you're right. My main concern is that my Behringer delay is wayyyy too muddy for my Small Clone and Holy Grail. My distortion is literally a Boss Metal Zone so I'd love to get a proper fuzzy sound, which I hope the Danelectro, based on reviews and videos, sounds far better than the Metal Zone.
>>
Years ago I stumbled over a bass manufacturer from europe while reading a review about one of their instruments.
I totally forgot their name and the only thing I remember is that they used non-standard material for nearly everything (iirc no wood anywhere) AND it didn't look like a space dildo.
It had a double cut-away body and managed to look modern and 'sleek' (the review model had an orange body and black neck).

Anyone who know what I'm talking about and could point me to the manufacturer? As I said I totally forgot the names and I also don't have that magazine anymore.
>>
>>63355061
Yeah, it never goes away until you find music you actually like playing. I was a metalhead/prog/fusion guy in my teenage years eventually grew tired of it and for the past 10 years I've been playing slower jazz and experimental guitar music.

You're probably just sick of playing the same stuff. Try learning some new styles.
>>
>>63355113
We'll distortion and fuzz are two different things so......
>>
>>63355043
Yeah maybe twenty years ago grandpa.
Oh wait, the JC-120 is 40 years old.
And what's with that "dynamics" argument ? Save for really talented guitarists or classical guitarists, nobody gives a damn about dynamics when playing.
I'll that SS is popular as well among bassists, who work far more on dynamics.

>>63355114
Sounds like Flaxwood but it seems they don't make basses
>>
>>63355154
The Danelectro is listed as a distortion, but it's actually a fuzz.

>>
>>63355387
It'll be two years in may.
I live on the coast as well and sweat a lot when playing.
>>
>>63355043
I'm not as confident as you.
I can pick up a cheap solid state vs a decent tube one. I guess some modeling might be done better than others so i cant quite tell.

But lets assume for the sake of my argument that solid state vs tube sound 100% identical.

The one thing a good tube amp brings to the table is bragging rights. You show up to a gig with a 100W Tube amp half stack, and everyone knows you mean business.
While showing up with an emulator that plugs in to a laptop or even worse some small peace of plastic that you send commands through your phone I automatically assume your a joker.

Are inverse headstocks more likely to crack than normal ones?
I believe they are, due to the low E-string going all the way up to the tip of the headstock, which produces more tension on the headstock.

yes, p-bass has a single humbucking pick-up you can hear it in most 70's and 80's punk records and old motown and funk records its a pretty deep tone

jazz bass has a brighter growlier tone cause it has two pickups and one is pretty close to the bridge, you can hear that tone a lot in 2000s funk records and Rush records

I'm not a competent jazz player by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm trying to learn some jazz standards to jam along to using ireal pro (basically a digitized real book that you can edit)

I'm learning Easy Living. The chord changes I circled don't line up with any of the recordings of the song I've heard (I like the billie holiday version the best) Listening to it sounds more like they are playing F7, Bb-7, Eb-7, (aka 2,5,1 changes) although that is kind of repetitive the original scoring (which i think goes 5,4,7,1) just doesn't sound right with the melody at all. Is that the point of the song since jazz is supposed to be all beep boop boppity bop and shit? If so why would pretty much every version I hear substitute it for the redundant 2,5,1 changes? If some jazz cats went up to me and were like "hey honky throw down a groove we about make some jazz go down cat" what would I play?
>>
>>63356418
Baritones tend to have slightly more tension, but it's still not enough to make a difference, just look at 4+4 8 strings or 6 string basses, they handle more tension than their regular counterparts yet have no trouble doing so. Same for 12 string guitars and 8 string basses.
Really the only way to break a headstock is knocking it, or looking at it the wrong way if it's a Gibson 3+3

Let the bassist mute the strings and pop the strings with his flat hand like a metronom for the beginning and when the guitars are in line, he can get in.
When you have problems with the harmony, you should build up a riff of chords (maybe) and let the othe band members figure out what they play to it. Then you can slowly begin building up a special rythm or song.
Maybe sounds very strict but it's a good start and you learn alot from it.

>Protip: Let the band member with the less musical experience start and the other members build up the rest

A big thing people miss is feel. I hop between my tube amps and modelling stuff and while the sound difference isn't huge (it's noticeable) the feel is very different. My AxeFX feels like playing an 8100. Really immediate attack, feels awesome for fast staccato stuff, not so much for doom.

I had a warlock bass for years, it was shitty, but not THAT shitty. I did sand it down to repaint, and it has a nicer block of wood than my Epiphone Special II for sure.

I've played that '87 NJ Stealth I posted last night and an 80s BC Rich Gunslinger. Both were fantastic. A lot of the cheap BC Rich guitars are pretty nasty though. Few I've played felt worse than LTD-50 stuff.

40W must be newer, maybe the speaker is 4ohm and the "20w" is actually 40w, but a 8ohm speaker?
>>
Guys, how do I stop just doing power chords? EVERYTHING POWER CHORDS.

I'M RUINED

Same problem here senpai. I never should have tried to learn from Guitar Hero.

please advise

This is going to sound incredibly ignorant, but are their any programs for PC that work like the tone designer on Rocksmith?

1 year of listening to free jazz should you get rid of it.

just do like gojira and play fourths instead of fifths
>>

goddamn do i love gojira

Is 24 3/4" scale bad for D standard, or will it suffice? Or should I try to get 25 1/2"?
>>
asked because I HATE loose floppy strings
>>
>>63359731
Also a top-tier way to sound heavy as balls in E standard. Downtuning is for chumps

any reply?

changed the strings on my Fender telecaster from the stock 9-42s to Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkies 9-46s

Think i'll have to get it setup because of the change?

I dont have an amp with chorus, nor do I have a dedicated chorus pedal, but I have a zoom multi-effect with like, 4-5 different ones. They each sound great in different ways, but in no way shape or form compare to the Rainbow Machine. Goddamn I wish I could dish out $220+ on a single effect pedal.

>>63360000
slightly. Depends what you want
>>
>>63360097
apparently its just the top 3 strings that have different widths

sorry, i dont know too much about setting guitars up

If i switch those back to the stock sizes, will everything be okay again?
>>
>>63360133
is something actually wrong with it?
>>
>>63360162
well theres a slight buzz if a pick the big E string hard higher up in the neck
>>
>>63359731
I already do this but that's still really limiting.
>>
>>63359879
It'd be fine. I tune to B and A standard on a 24.75".

>>63359905
Aren't they playing in D? Mors Principium Est play in E though.

That looks like those messed up painted/natural guitars from three threads ago.
>>
>>63355043
>tubes less compressed
I don't think you've got a solid grasp of compression. To be fair, unless you're into production then none of us really do.

On a tube amp the sound is way more compressed. You guitar starts to compress before it distorts (clips). This is called amplitude distortion. It can make the things sound louder because of longer attack.

>>63355545
You don't want to brag about your gear. Dealing with gear heads after a show is a buzzkill.

On the other hand unless you're a meme band, playing through an 8" practice amp on stage is really cringe too.
>>
>>63346835
It is possible, but it won't sound as clear or bright as when used with a pick

That is unless you play with fingernails

Would I be stupid to own the same guitar, in the same color in a 6 and 7 string variant?

I love my JP6 but I only can find the 7 string cheap on the color I already have.
>>
>>63361434
Yes. And Double yes if it's black.

I really care about aesthetics, a lot. After having 3 black guitars, I plan on never buying another. Two of them, I repainted. I enjoy bright colors so much more. It really affects my mood. Like a runner throwing on some crazy exotic colored Nike's, I love my candy apple red bass. I see it and just have to pick it up and start thumping. I also swirl dipped a guitar.

It's the Mystic Dream one, it changes color and shit. It's the more expensive finish but also the most common.

compared to the promoters flyer:

>yes i am butthurt that mine wasn't used
>>
>>63361725
Theirs is worse aesthetically but it's more noticeable which is more important for (what I assume is) a relatively unknown gig. Red or fuchsia accents would work well to grab attention.
>>
>>63362020

but you can barely make out the name. it makes me so mad, because it looks like there was literally no effort put into the flyer.
>>
>>63361725

Also tell your area to come up with better band names.
>>
>>63362224
Absolutely, I'm drunk and it doesn't looks appealing.
