For example everyday im working out in a really small gym and i see these guys setting up speakers and playing hip hop or rap loudly while im listening to metal with earphones. Once they leave i put up some metal music on speakers and once somebody comes in they are like "what the fuck dude? What is that shit?". So why is it okay to listen to rap or hip hop but not metal in gym? It is not like im forcing my metal music on the by using earphones i only put it on speakers when nobody is in gym. Because hip hop is a much more popular and mainstream genre (at the least the type I assume they will tend to play) and so is much more of a normal, expected sound for the average person to hear in public. Metal is much less popular, in general people would find it a much more distracting sound and also the aesthetics are more arresting and would sound more aggressive and potentially irritating or unpleasant to your average person. The only place where I found people to tolerate metal music was in Japan. I have lived there and often you can hear metal in konbini or even in Shibuya streets. People are more open to anything. Here in Germany it is the same issue that people are open to hip hop and gangster rap but once you play some metal they basically make fun of you. My boss asked me if I really listen to this kind of music when I told him I wanna take some days off to go to a metal festival. He was kind of surprised and seemed like he never met anyone before listen to that alien music. And he 30 or so. But I don't give a shit. Metal doesn't sound very "natural" to new ears.
