every good album ever? i think what s/he meant was that the artist could've been anyone - it lacks integrity. one could argue whether that's true or not, or if it's even relevant beyond the view of the listener - but i suppose that's what s/he meant.
>>
>>63260255
Maybe he meant that Rae could be replaced by any other singer and the results would be the same, that she's intransigent in her own releases.

that's how I feel about that album, at least.
The instrumentals are good, but she's kind of pointless as a singer.
>>
>>63261221
This, I actually like that album but anyone could have recorded it, there's not much to Jepsen except for legs
>>
>>63261221
i've noticed this more on later listens but i think she does a lot of subtle subversions of pop lyrical cliches that i think are really great. she breaks love down more into abstraction (which i think is a much more grounded and relatable way of writing love songs) instead of just using cheesy metaphors like 'your love is ______' (particularly on run away with me which is such a fucking good song)
>>
>>63261304
basically
they are fantastic legs though tbf
>>
>>63261221
that could be said for any singer ever.
>>
>>63261398
You do realize that she probably doesn't write her songs, right?
and as far as lyricism goes, her works aren't that amazing.

Want to listen to a fantastic female lyricist? Go for Susanne Sundfor

I don't think so.
People like Dylan and Nick Drake, to give easy examples, are pretty much inseparable from their works.

It can be an unique style of singing, or just the way they portray emotion. Good singers are a necessary portion of the music they make, and it's hard to separate them from it.

I respect those trips and everything but that's a pretty dumb thing to say
>>
>>63261452
she has writing credits on every track on the album, usually the cowriters are just the producers and occasionally one other person who contributed something minor

i don't think she's an /incredible/ lyricist but in the context of a mainstream retro-pop revival album i think her lyrics are better than almost anyone else doing a similar thing (taylor swift for example)

sundfor is good and i already know her, don't need u to school me or give me recs. i just think this record is more unique than some people give it credit for

Telling op about albums with personality.

I mean, in the sense of replacing Nick Drake with an obviously Nick Drake influenced singer, not just by ANY other singer.

CRJ does have personality. Her cute/raspy, sometimes big as a lead synth voice is the one thing that makes the whole thing work. She can be playful, she can be melodramatic.

I'm pretty sure CRJ is a lot more involved in the process of 'her' music-creation than most pop artists are.

CRJ definitely has personality, though. It's just not obnoxious, arrogant, in-your-face. It's subdued and uncontroversial (controversy in that manufactured way of all pop culture)
>>
>>63262187
It doesn't work like that anon.

A good singer embeds himself into the music.

There are lots of other "cute/raspy" singers, and it's easy to be "playful" or "melodramatic".

It's not how the signer sings, or the topic itself.
It's how you see the singer in relation to his craft and the music he makes.

You can't separate Dylan from his music because it talked about his worldview.
Nick's talked about his feeling and depression.
Springsteen's music talks about his views of american lifestyle and its expectations.
Sure, someone else can sing their songs, but it wouldn't be the same.

The issue with Rae is that she doesn't present herself through her music. You don't get to know her, or know her ideals or views because you aren't supposed to.
>>
I mean, if you need "personality" from melodic dance-pop music, you're doing it wrong. Does Kylie Minogue have any more personality? Does Britney Spears?
>>
>>63262364
This.

Music like this is supposed to be an easy way to please.
There's nothing wrong in that, but don't expect loads of personality.
>>
>>63261753
this album is good please stop spamming it
