I guess I prefer other "indie" rock bands and feel like Built to Spill is just homogenized Replacements and Husker Du with 90s production but they are very good at what they did so I understand the appeal, I just don't find them to be a best of the 90s band

Start with the first, Bufo Alvarius, which is also their best album. Then you can go on with Amanita and Lapsed. The subsequent albums are ok, but they are worth it only if you are a fan.
