It was never really about growing out or into genres, I think that's an awful perception. I love metal and though I rarely listen to it anymore, I can still appreciate some good tech death. Over time, I just learned to appreciate various aspects of songs and now I'm pretty indifferent to genre. I find it makes more sense to just focus on individual artists regardless of what type of music they end up making, there's still something to be enjoyed.
