So I got about $1000 to purchase new equipment.

What do yall think I should buy?

My current set up is a NI S61, Akai APC40, and an Ableton Push.

I'm thinking maybe new speakers, but honestly my BOSE still hold up pretty well. Don't need a sound card, nor headphones.

Most famous producers didn't make it until their 30's bro.

The few exceptions you see now, are objectively shit and basically hit the "getting discovered" lottery.
>>
>>63214541

What type of music do you make?

how come 32 bars is the minimum on ableton? is this because of tradition on music theory or something the developers decided upon? why not 64?

Kaoss pad?
>>
>>63212526

Definitely way more down for that second one than the first.

Not sure the type of feedback you're looking for, but the 1st track's chipmunk vocals are a bit thin. Your percussion, though, is really tight and it sounds great imo. Those hi-hats actually feel like something.

The second track is doing a lot with a cloud feeling that I'm really down for. Like an updated Heralds of Change. Seriously, the world needs more wonky.

What are you thinking long term for these?
>>
>>63214679
>Kaoss pad?

Looks cool, but honestly wouldn't have much use for it with my current set up.

Thanks man , just wanted to hear some thoughts really. the cloudish track is already out actually if youre interested. long term i'm working on an EP and building some buzz so i'm narrowing down what to put in there, but i had two hard drive crashes and lost all my projects/samples twice so I'm starting from scratch.

>>
>>63216004
It doesn't seem to have any knobs so it's probably not a subtractive synth. I can't think of any FM synth keyboards with that color scheme either, so that leaves it to be either a ROMpler or a general midi keyboard, the latter of which are the most common of the two so it's probably that.

What band is that? It might be possible to identify what that keyboard is based on what it sounds like.

Damn.

The band is called Family, they're a cult band in Spain because they only released one album, that is incredible, and then parted ways. Barely gave any performances, and did no interviews. That's one of the only photos of them, taken in 91.

The album is synth pop so at least if there's any chance of identifying it, that would help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAF_irpkw_4&list=PL839653B8CE5A7F61

Does anyone know a 64 bit VST with whale sounds, or a whale patch? I can´t make omnisphere make it sound as I want. Kind of this but more realistic. Check the 47:52 track Peter and the whale.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oOkSYZh4do

The only kind of thing I could find was this but it didn´t satisfy me.

And I found this VST but it doesn´t load in Ableton 64. http://necromare.blogspot.com.ar/2011/01/free-vst-whalesong.html

I like the idea and melodies, but the mixing is obviously shit. If you want it to sound cool you're going to need to sculpt the shit out of the sounds with eq to make them more modern, boost the bass, cut any muddy stuff, hype up the treble, I think what you have there sounds good except the mix is totally lifeless. Also limit the fuck out of it. I want it to sound like a Flying Lotus record type shit.
>>
>>63217875
Definitely agree with you on the mixing. Again just arranged it in like 4 minutes, I did like extremely basic EQ, I'm going to go back and probably add some quick decay on the snaps and snares and layer them so there's more texture.

But yes I'll do all that right now. Thanks for the feedback friendo.

It's probably not that hard but I havent been able to get that sound out of anything. Thanks for any help
>>
>>63221286
It's not going to be easy, but you probably want to experiment a lot with samplers, either hardware or software. A lot of it sounds like a short loop in a sampler and then manipulating the start and end points in clever ways. In fact, you can kind of hear the clicking as it loops. It also just has a nice warm sound that will probably be hard to get without nice hardware though.
>>
So I just recently got a job, and after I get a PS4 I'm gonna save up for either an SP-404 or MPC 1000

Which one does /prod/ recommend? I'm leaning almost entire toward the 404.
>>
>>63221519
Thanks. I have an SP303 and it's not the most versatile sampler but would something like an MPC work for that? I've been thinking about getting one for a while

Have you thought about getting a rack sampler like one of the akai or Emu ones? Using your Maschine along with a Akai S1000 would pretty much work like a MPC. I use my Maschine along with an old Emu sampler and it works really well. I have a Emu ESI4000 turbo which I picked up from eBay for £50 but you could get a E4XT Ultra for a few hundred and have all those excellent Z-plane filters plus a really powerful sampler with all the synth capabilitys.
>>
>>63214541
honestly man if you've got $1000 and don't know what to spend but you've got Bose speakers get some monitors. if you've been chillin with Bose for a while I would recommend getting some rokit 6 or 8s off craigslist, you'll spend less than 400 most likely, that way you'll still have a good chunk left over for hardware. if you truly care about sound quality and have 1000 get some Yamaha hs series but desu fuck that
>>
>>63222801

I don't have enough space for a rack sampler.

404s and MPCs are relatively small, and portable.

I wanted to take the 404 into an arcade and record the noises with the built in mic for a project i'm working on

My man you can't just take random notes and expect them to sound good with each other. There are rules, and if you want to bend the rules you gotta learn them first. The synthy sound on the back is playing on a different scale, and there are never any parts where they try to accomodate each other. Let me show you an example of someone who knew how to bend the rules as far as possible without actually breaking them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2EbX3toK_E

This one doesn't really explore dissonancey, but its still the legend, so why not.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUvH3xf0e-I
Anyway for the first one, the majority of thme are tritones, so it doenst sound nearly as bad to the ear since theyre still based off the root of the scale. If you want to write music that does weirdo things with the scale you really need to start listening to more Jazz, fusion, frank zappa, and etc. May I also recommend Allan Holdsworth. Check out his instrumental albums. Maybe his debut. The music you listen to will translate to what you make. Right now the problem is you dont listen to that much differnet types of music, so you dont have much road to experiment or borrow from. Even music you think you'd never like ever. As an example, I dislike house music and death metal, but I'll still listen to it because even things I dislike might sound good in the right context.

yeah i do know nothing about music theory, no need to be condescending like that though. i mean that's a shitty attitude for sure

i know that my first breakdown doesnt work too well but i was messing around (inb4 all of it doesnt work i know that the synth and piano aren't melodic together)

anyways i was just trying to do some uk hardcore for fun, kinda like a joke you know, did you ever heard of it ??? it's supposed to be very cheesy like that

i don't think i don't listen to enough types of music , i kinda do different styles in my tracks i think, just that i dont know how to write music or really tried understand music theory . to be fair it was my first attempt at doing something this (un)melodic , will have to learn a bit of theory first. should listen to jazz more for sure tho
>>
>>63222801
Is there an automated way to chop up a sample into a grid in the E-mu ESI or do you have to do it manually?
>>
>>63223862
Thanks friend. Definitely check out those guys for sure. And ignore these mates. Most of them are acting douchey because they finally found something they know a little bit more about then another. For the synth line, you can probably transpose it down to the root note of the piano if the notes aren't all over the place. The root note is usually the first note of a melody or the first note of the chord (unless the chord is inverted). One last thing. Try to train your ears to better detect things like that. Maybe if you hear a melody on a tv commercial, try to find the melody on a nearby keyboard/piano with trial and error. It'll also give you a better idea of scales, so it'll be easier as time goes on for you to see what goes with what.
>>
>>63224000
The ESI is all manual,by ear! The e6400 and the rest of those emu samplers based on that model have a waveform screen and I believe a decent editor. They have a beat mangler function too which looks good. Gonna buy myself one once I have a bit more outboard gear.

I normally use a dedicated sample editor on my computer for sample editing as I find it comfy to sit and do of evenings while having a few beers, but my point was if I'm right is that the akai s1000 s2000 etc are pretty much the same as the MPC's so if you had a Maschine or akai MPD already some thing like a rack mounted sampler would work well with Maschine as a controller, much like a MPC but cheaper, or you could get a top of the range akai or emu. Obviously that's no good if you want portability.
>>
Is there any way to compress/limit my entire computer's output?
I've been wanting to do this for ages and I never found a solution.
I thought maybe you guys have an idea on how to approach this.
>>
how do you make this bass sound?

https://youtu.be/azcZ5M5o-ZY?t=91

(comes in at around 1:30 if the link wont work)

I'm really bad at synthesis, but I just don't know how to make it "pluck" so hard when I try to recreate this in massive using a simple square wave and low pass filter with an LFO. this bass sound is pretty common in this genre of house but all the tutorials out there are really bad and just end up sounding similar to what I can already do.

Yes you need to eq your mixes. Liberally cut the low lows, my latest mix has shelved at 80hz. Then you need to dip or cut out harshness around 6-10 khz.

Basically study mixing, as in read books and articles instead of jumping in and hoping everything will sound good like every loser here does.
>>
>>63224777
I think you didn't quite understand my question, sorry if it was poorly phrased.
I'm not talking about production here.
I'm talking about compressing/limiting everything my computer outputs.
Browser, mediaplayer etc...
Like... a limiter on stereomix or something.
>>
>>63224818
turn the volume knob down
>>
>>63224818

You'd need to patch all of your audio from every application through a program that can host your limiter, I had to do a similar thing with my nephew who was using a usb mic with very low gain so that he could use it in Skype - I used Virtual Audio Cable to do the internal audio routing and SaviHost (a small footprint VST host) to run a gain plugin and a compressor/limiter.

Routing for you would be:

Choose each application's audio out to be Virtual Audio Cable --> SaviHost with plugins --> computer audio output
>>
>>63225238

You'll also need to use ASIO drivers to minimize latency - use ASIO4All if your interface doesn't have any ASIO support with its drivers.

>>
>>63227090
You are supposed to understand how the parameters function by themselves and with the other modules, then you're supposed to apply that knowledge in your sound design. They can't tell you how to make it sound good, especially with FM because there are so many options.

1.) spend enough hours messing with chords, colors, and progressions, piecing them together in coherent phrases
2.) learn basic theory online (google music theory on google) and learn the language. learn the letters, piece those letters into words, take those words and make phrases, take those phrases and write a paragraph, write a paragraph a good couple of hundreds of thousands of times and out of that comes your composition.

the emphasis here being on you have to dedicate stupid amount of time to it. it doesn't come over-night
>>
>>63221696
Sorry for the late reply. MPCs are actually not great for that. What you want is more of a synth/sampler type hybrid. They made a lot of them in the early 90's. Something like a ASR-10, ASR-X, Kurzweil K2000, or something by EMU. There are probably modern equivalents as well but i dont know them.

MPC's are not really that full featured as samplers. They're more about the sequencer. The ASR on the other hand is practically a glitch machine. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's (partially) what that guy used on that track.

Like I said you just make a really short sample and then modulate the start and end points with an envelope, the mod wheel, LFO, or some combination. The type of glitch you get is more dependent on the sample source. It's good to use sort of "pure" sounds, so like an isolated voice sample, trumpet note, etc.
>>
>>63227994
Shut up faggot he can still learn, it's not that hard, and I didn't say it was good I said he could be good if he keeps at it. You're probably just as bad but you're a pissy little twat about everything cus your mummy paid for your "patrician" music lessons. I seriously wouldn't be surprised if you're autistic.
>>
>>63228288
Thanks man, would an EPS 16 work for that too? I've been thinking about getting one of those or an emax ii.

So it's pretty much layering samples that have been chopped up/modulated a bunch?
>>
>>63228392
Yeah an EPS 16 would be great, it's just a slightly more lofi version of the ASR-10. I think Autechre actually used it a bunch back in the day, to give you some idea.

I honestly think there's more to it than what I'm telling you, like there's different types of glitches, but the glitches in the song where you can hear the clicking from the sound looping is definitely something similar to what I'm talking about.

I don't really know how to make other types of glitches. I feel like most of them are sample based rather than synth based though. Just try to think of weird ways to do things, like circuit bending or breaking some cheap equipment in some way where it still sort of works. Idk.
>>
>>63228348
Do you really think he could be good? He sounds utterly tone deaf to me
>>
>>63223862
The song isn't bad at all, at least you made a full length song instead of a 1 minute clip, and wrote a melody instead of a 2 note bleep bloop sound with a one note bassline. That's better than most stuff that gets posted on here.
>>
>>63228504
Thanks man. I think I'm gonna try circuit bending my old casio just to fuck around with

Just be careful circuit bending anything that isn't battery powered. Even if it isn't plugged in, the capacitors can still hurt you.
>>
>>63229916
Is there any way to avoid it, like a grounding wristband? Or are those only to avoid messing up the circuitry in general?

>>
>>63229352
Minimoog.
>>63229445

>>
>>63230060
You can minimize the risk, but you can never fully avoid it unless you know a lot about electronics.

Basically from what I gather online, you should use insulated tools to do the bending, so you're never touching any metal that's also touching the circuit board. Also don't bend near the capacitors. Those are the things that look kind of like batteries, they're like big cylinders.

You can also wear rubber gloves but apparently it's not as simple as just wearing regular rubber gloves, you have to buy special ones and do all this extra shit like wearing multiple layers of gloves at once.

I started when I was 19, but I've had over 5 years where I did very little music wise.
Just seems odd that there are constant posts here about age and it being too late to make music...maybe most of these posts are done by people trying to make it or something. It's just a bit odd to me to hear this, as when I make music it's all about the enjoyment and learning interesting new things that can help me be creative, the last thing on my mind is getting signed by anyone. I don't even share my music on soundclout either.
>>
>>63235026
ive actually played guitar since I was 14 so its not like I never got to fuck with music at all I took some classical guitar lessons when I was 14 or so and then was in a cringe tier metal band when I was 17-18 kek

I guess it is a misconception that many people have that if you don't start young you will suck forever
>>
>>63235026
>>63235615

I think a lot of it has to do with scenes, people who try to make it in the scene that they follow most likely see a narrow window of opportunity and it makes them anxious to succeed before it collapses, or before the scene rejects them as old and irrelevant.

That's just my observations though, based upon what I thought when I had those aspirations - when it fades, even if you're not successful, you still have the desire to make music, and if you enjoy doing that then it's enough. Or at any rate it's enough for me.

Why can't I make music?

I've been trying to produce for 4 years now and I'm still completely useless at making music. I haven't made a single song I'm happy with, most days I just get stuck in a drum loop and realise I can't come up with any decent ideas. I try to use acapellas and it's like nothing works, I try to replicate songs that inspire me and it doesn't work, I try to make other genres and that just goes even worse, everything just sounds shit to me and it's seriously left me depressed to the point where I don't enjoy anything anymore and some times I can't even sleep at night just thinking about it. I wake up in the morning and feel positive and say "today I'm going to make a track" and just give up after an hour. I've tried giving it a long break (almost 6 months last time) and when I started over it was the same shit again.

Sorry for complaining here and I know no one gives a shit, but I had to vent.

>>
>>63238378
Same.

I come up with ideas that I find exciting pretty regularly, but when it comes down to recording them I lose faith almost immediately and give up. Everything I do sounds shitty and subpar to me.
It's been this way for 4 years now, I can't control it. What's wrong with me.

>>63238729

>>63238508
I play guitar and can manage myself on a keyboard. But I make electronic music.

>>63238810
I don't even want to imagine how much worse my problem would be if I made a genre that involved recording guitars and getting a good enough tone or whatever.

But in my case, where I make electronic music, I've come to realise that no matter what samples I use, what plugins I learn, what methods I use, nothing is going to save me from being shit at actually coming up with something or going beyond a 8 bar drum loop.
>>

https://clyp.it/wjbdkuhx
how can i improve this?
>>
>>63238378
>>63238810
>>63239002

There's nothing wrong with having high standards - I'd say it's one of the pre-requisites to becoming good - but where a lot of people fall down is that they judge themselves by the standards that the people they admire set for themselves.

This is a dead-end when starting out and trying to improve. It's too big a jump.

Improvement happens in small steps, sometimes too small to notice straight away.
A good way to boost your morale is to try to spot little things that you now do even slightly better than you did before - maybe you can find loop points in samples much quicker now, or maybe you're taking much less time to identify irritating frequencies in your sounds - this stuff proves that you are getting better, even if you're not up where you want to be just yet.

Small steps, and take note of the steps that you've taken.

I really liked this. Your pad is on point. Effected vocals are awesome. I would probably put in some quiet textures. Real close to the mic kinda taps or something . Just to add some right-in-your-ear-but-you-might-not-notice-them bugs (if that makes any sense). But that's up to you.

This could easily go in some art/horror film as is.
>>
>>63244709
>>63245075

I thought about it some more.

You could also add some one-off samples of things. Something that's not too reverby or echoed. Just to draw attention to something real quick and then it doesn't recur. Like somebody talking or a snippet of a song. Seems like you feel like there isn't enough. So just start throwing shit at it.
>>
>>63241483
If you are driven by success you are more likely to make it by knowing the right people, being part of a scene or just pure luck. Unfortunately this is this is how the music industry works and even established artist are still not really making it as there are so many people making music now in a over saturated market.
If you are producing to "make it" the chances are you are going to be pouring thousands of hours of your time into it so why not enjoy what you are doing rather than spending all that time trying to "make it"?

This beat is fire, but I can't tell if the outro part works. I feel like it lingers. Does it linger?

Great ending. Something is missing for me. I want a smooth bass line in there. It's mostly just a one note droning bass. I'd cut the bass drone out as much as needed with an eq and stick your own in there. Even if it's just two-three notes, it would give the track more movement.

Other than that I love it.
