The songwriting is pretty underwhelming both lyrically and structurally, especially compared to the work he's put out since.
A lot of the tracks are made up of the same cycle of four chords which drags on for the duration, and this gets grating on songs like Chicago and Man of Metropolis. On top of that the only thing he does to add variation is to layer and then strip away the backing instruments (almost all of which repeat the sales riffs for the duration.) This actually isn't a bad technique, and it sounds really iconic, but the problem is that so many tracks fall into this groove that it feels monotonous. After a lot of re-listens, my favorite tracks are probably the closer, Seers Tower, and Decatur because they're so different from everything else. Age of Adz and All Delighted People do a better job at making each song sound distinct, and they're better listens because of it.
Also, I'm not fond of the lyrics. A lot of time he falls into what feels like allegory and anecdotes about characters that aren't him, or the lyrics are just abstracted to point where he can name off different places and historical figures. It has its charm, sure, but I'm just a bigger fan of his work since. It feels more coherent and more genuine.

I was basically gonna get on this thread to say the same thing about the arrangements and the lyrics. Like, what's up with Predatory Wasp... where it seems like Sufjan suddenly remembered it was supposed to be about the state so he had back up singers sing vague stuff like "Great!...Lakes!" It was a beautiful song and it didn't need that at all.
