Fuck you. I never thought Painting With was great. I've actually grown to like it more now than I did when I first heard it. At first I would have rated Painting With a 4/10, but some of the songs have become more enjoyable to me over time. I still think all of Panda Bear's songs on there are terrible though. Do you actually think Centipede Hz and Painting With are as good as their 2000's output and that everyone who ranks them lower does so because of other reviews? Animal Collective undeniably underwent a drop in quality after the Merriweather era. If you're going to claim Centipede Hz and Painting With are on the same level as their earlier work than you're in plain denial.
Granted, I should have rated Spirit a 9/10. That was a reluctant ten I gave it. I think Here Comes the Indian is their second best album as a band anyway.

Yes, I would even go as far as to say it's better than some of their more "/mu/-core" albums like feels and ST in particular; not spirits because that one actually is amazing and I agree with you although it's more of a 9 and not a 10 (production isn't the best)

I guess you and I have fundamentally different taste in Animal Collective. Centipede Hz audibly has their most forced, unnatural songwriting. It sounds like they were just getting the job done because it had been three years since Merriweather. It sounds like a plastic, artificial remake of Strawberry Jam. While Avey Tare's songwriting improved on Painting With, about half of the album sounds like Kyrary Pamyu Pamyu songs sung by Panda Bear. I only gave it a six because I've come to really enjoy songs like Vertical, the Burglars, and On Delay.

There's not one single thing wrong with Feels and Sung Tongs. I'm not a bandwagoner, I love Centipede Hz and Hollinndagain, I think Danse Manatee is good but not amazing, I think Spirit is overrated as fuck, and I also happen to think Sung Tongs and Feels are in the best era of AnCo. They're fairly happy records that make me feel good, they both have some slightly noisier and more ambient parts as well as upbeat poppy tracks, and plenty in between the two. They're records that tick every fucking box, and you would almost HAVE to be contrarian to think that they're bad parts of the discography.

They're just similar in that they have hectic songwriting and atmospheres, but on Strawberry Jam the chaos was always perfectly arranged giving it an exciting, spontaneous feel, whereas Centipede Hz just sounds messy and unorganized, and ugly as hell. Strawberry Jam sounds free and natural and ecstatic, and inspiring, while Centipede Hz sounds tense and uptight and claustrophobic. And ultimately the songs just aren't as good, with the exception of Today's Supernatural and Applesauce.

why do you hate it? it't not weird, structureless shit, it's actually quite simple music buried underneath a wealth of noises that give it this sort of extreme, noisy sound that I guess could be grating, but it's not impenetrable by any stretch. my only problem with it is how few musical ideas it really contains, there are three ambient tracks, another repetitive and meterless track, and three good noise pop tracks, one of which is really good but significantly less interesting than the others. this album really could've used more tracks along the lines of native belle and hey light.
